Excerpt from Mission: Her Shield (Team 52 #7) featuring Jonah

Jonah Grayson listened to the sirens echo off the walls as the doors to the large warehouse slid closed.

All the files and artifacts related to the Minoan Minotaur virus were now safely locked away in the underground warehouse deep in the heart of the Area 52 base.

He slid his hands into the pockets of his suit pants, nodded at Arlo standing by the door, then headed back toward his office.

The team had enjoyed a few days off, but were now back at base and busy with training.

He passed the gym, and through the glass window, he saw Blair kick Lachlan. The team leader blocked the hit with his prosthetic arm.

“No fair.” Blair landed on the mats in a crouch, rubbing her shin.

“Everything’s fair in a fight, Mason,” Lachlan replied.

The rest of the team was on the treadmills or lifting weights.

Jonah kept walking, a faint smile forming. He remembered when he’d first formed the team and recruited them.

Their military careers had been over for lots of different reasons, and they’d all been angry, unhappy, lost. His smile faded. He remembered how that felt all too well.

He’d given them all a purpose, and now, the entire team was in love, contentment shining off them.

That wasn’t a feeling Jonah was very familiar with.

In his office, he walked past the fish tank set in the wall in lieu of a window. Then he sat behind his desk and grabbed a file off the shiny surface. There were always people in Washington wanting updates, and other business to attend to before the next mission arose. It was his job to keep Team 52 safe and functioning smoothly.

Movement in the corner of the office caught his gaze and Jonah tensed.

A woman pushed away from the wall and he shot to his feet. He’d never seen her before. If he had, he’d remember.

Copper-red hair brushed her shoulders, and she had smooth, pale skin, high cheekbones, and brilliant hazel eyes. She was stunning.

And there was no way she should be in his highly secure office.

She shot him a direct look, like it was her office not his.

“Who the hell are you?” he demanded.

“That’s not important.” Her voice was liquid, like the smoothest liqueur.

“How did you get in here?”

“I’m here to give you a warning. Watch your back, Director Grayson.”

Jonah scowled and skirted his desk. He didn’t take his eyes off her. She was dressed in fitted black leggings and a black shirt.

“Who are you?” He stressed each word.

He already knew that she had no intention of answering him.

But Jonah wanted answers. Her identity, how the hell she’d snuck into his office in the middle of a secret, underground military base.

He lunged for her.

The woman moved like water, she flowed. She struck his arm, ducked, then punched him in the stomach.

Jonah grunted. He lunged for her again.

Together, they danced across his office until he pinned her to the wall.

Her breasts pushed against his chest and the scent of her hit him—something bold and woody. She touched her tongue to her top lip. Her lips were painted bright red.

“So, you aren’t just a desk jockey who wears a suit well,” she murmured. “You have some moves.” Then she smiled. “So do I.”

She whirled, slipping out from between him and the wall. She darted around him and landed a jab to his ribs, then another to his lower back. Cursing, he shifted and followed her.

He blocked her next hit, then tried to grab her shirt.

She leaped up and landed a huge roundhouse kick to his head.

Fuck. His ears ringing, he stumbled back and hit his desk.

Before Jonah could move, she whipped out a small length of rope from her pocket, and wrapped it around his wrists.

He went to roll, but she wrapped the rope around the desk leg and pulled tight.

Fuck.

He was now half lying on his desk and tied to the damn thing.

Her lips quirked. “You almost had me.”

“I won’t let you get away with this.” He kept his gaze locked on hers. “I will find out who you are, and I will track you down.” Jonah had the pleasure of seeing her hesitate, then she set her shoulders back.

“I’m actually on your side, Grayson. Trouble is coming. I’m warning you so you can protect your team.”

“I need more information than that.” He jerked on the rope.

He watched her gaze fall to his throat, where the top two buttons of his shirt were open. She looked distracted for a second, then she shook her head.

“I can’t tell you anything else. I shouldn’t even be here.” She pushed away from him. “Be prepared.”

“Wait,” he growled.

She sauntered to the door. He jerked on the rope again, and he heard the wood of his desk creak.

But she was already gone, slipping out the door.

Dammit.

Jonah lifted his leg. He always had a knife strapped to his ankle. He bent his leg, and gripped the blade awkwardly between his tied hands. He maneuvered the knife and sawed through the rope. It felt like it took forever, but finally the rope dropped to the carpet.

He shoved out of his office and prowled down the corridor. There was no sign of the redhead.

Dammit to hell, where had she gone? She couldn’t have gone too far.

He turned a corner and passed the rec room. Through the windows, he saw Nat perched on a stool, Axel beside her, his hand stroking the hem of her skirt. The man had a wide smile on his face.

Jonah stepped into the doorway. “Did you two see a woman come past here? Red hair?”

They both looked surprised.

“No.” Axel raised a brow. “You got woman trouble, Director?”

With a scowl, Jonah pivoted and headed out. He continued down the corridor and yanked out his cellphone.

“Edwards, lock down the base. We have an intruder inside. A woman, red hair, black clothing. She’s about five foot seven, and was in my office.”

“Sir,” the head of base security said. “That’s impossible.”

“I know it should be, but she was there. Pull up the security footage.”

“I already am.” The man cursed. “It’s all blurry. It’s still running, so it didn’t trip any alarms, but it’s impossible to make out any details.”

Jonah cursed. “Get Brooks on it. See if he can clean it up.”

“Yes, sir.”

Jonah jammed his phone back into his pocket and stopped, hands on his hips.

Who the hell was she? And what was the trouble that would put his team at risk?

He drew in a deep breath. Whoever his mystery redhead was, he would find her.

Jonah Grayson was a man who always kept his word.

Right now, I am busy living and breathing my new Norcross series. Hot, tattooed former military heroes busy saving the day in San Francisco! So I’m not working on any sci-fi romances right now (sci-fi fans, don’t worry, I’ll be kicking 2021 off with a new Eon Warriors adventure)

Excerpt from Paladin (House of Rone #4) featuring Maxon and Bellamy

Maxon touched the controls and fired his flyer’s weapons. The wind whipped his hair around his face as the laser ripped into another Edull bot.

He watched in satisfaction as the bot disintegrated.

He turned, checking another screen where he was monitoring the engines of all the flyers. The drakking sand. He hated the stuff. It always got in places where it shouldn’t, and now it was drakking damaging his flyers. The temperatures in the flyers’ engines were spiking.

“Take those bots out,” Magnus roared.

Their imperator flew past on his flyer, Jax flying close behind him.

Off to the left, Mace and Acton were flying side-by-side, taking aim at the bots. Zaden and Seren were on the right. Seren flew in wild, dizzying circles around the Edull bots, while Zaden’s maneuvers were more measured.

As they continued to take down the last of the bots, he saw Acton’s flyer pull away. Maxon frowned, then realized the cyborg was flying toward a fallen figure on the neighboring dune.

Drak. It looked like Simone.

An Edull bot edged back, hovering in the sky. A thin trail of smoke was snaking from it.

Maxon flew in close and he spotted Toren on the sand below. The cyborg had some ugly monstrosity on his shoulder—definitely not one of Maxon’s creations. There was another person with him. A short, compact blonde with colored ink on her arms.

As he watched, the woman leaped onto a smoking bot, jamming a laser cutter into it.

Maxon grunted. A dumb, heroic maneuver like that meant she was definitely an Earth woman.

Suddenly, the Edull bot she was sitting on shot straight up into the air. The woman almost fell off, but managed to clamp her arms and legs around the bot.

Drak.

Maxon aimed his flyer upward and chased after them. They went higher and higher, the ground racing away from them.

The woman was still hacking at the bot. Then, it died, and started to plummet.

The woman dropped as well.

Maxon flew in close and grabbed her hand. He swung her through the air and up behind him on the flyer.

“Nice catch.” She was breathless as she slid in behind him. She tucked her body close and plastered herself against him.

He scowled. He hated people in his space. “Dumb idea to kill the bot holding you airborne.”

“Only dumb if you crash into the ground and die. I didn’t.”

Her voice was surprisingly deep and gritty for a female. It echoed right in his ear. He liked it much better than the high-pitched, breathy voices of the women who usually approached him.

“Hey, Mr. Brooding, watch out!”

He looked up to see an Edull bot flying straight at them.

“Weapons?” she yelled.

He snorted. He always had weapons.

He touched the controls on the side compartment of the flyer. It flicked open to display his MaxStorm blaster. She yanked it out.

“Nice.” She lifted it and fired it one-handed. The bot dodged to the side.

“That’s not how you use it,” he growled. “Show some respect.”

“Bit busy right now.” She kept firing. “I’ll shoot, you fly.”

He jerked the controls of the flyer, pulling them to the side. He dodged the bot and wheeled around.

The woman stood up behind him, one hand on his shoulder to keep her balance.

She was either crazy or fearless, or both.

She fired on the bot and scored a direct hit. The bot exploded and slammed to the ground below.

“Woo hoo!” the woman shouted.

“Sit your ass down,” he said.

“Since you asked so nicely.” She leaned down and bit his ear.

Maxon growled again and flew lower. They whizzed past the final bot and she fired on it. It exploded.

He flew in and landed near the others. They were all clustered around Simone.

The woman leaped off the flyer.

“Gorgeous weapon.” She handed the blaster out to him.

He took her in—the tattoos up her arm, the strong face, the green eyes. Her platinum-colored hair was cut short against her head.

“That’s because I designed it.” He took the weapon.

“Well, you’re good at weapon design, not bad at flying, either. Shame about the grumpiness.”

He grunted and she grinned.

Then she cupped his cheeks, leaned forward, and kissed him.

Drak. The touch of her lips on his was like a punch in his gut. An electric shock ran through his body.

She pulled back, looking a bit shocked herself. But then an unrepentant grin reappeared, and she saluted him. Drakking Earth women.

Excerpt from Mark of Eon featuring Airen and Donovan

Sub-Captain Donovan Lennox stood on the bridge of the Rengard, staring out into space. It felt nothing like his usual post aboard the Space Corps high-tech ship, the Divergent.

He missed working with his crew. But he was learning a lot from the Eon and the Rengard’s warriors.

And there was one warrior he liked watching most of all.

Second Commander Airen Kann-Felis was sharp, dedicated, and a stickler for the rules. She was also gorgeous. Donovan had never gone for flashy. He liked quiet and understated, and Airen had that in spades. She was all smooth white skin, like cream.

Donovan liked cream.

Not for the first time since he’d come aboard the Rengard, he wondered what she was like when she relaxed. When she set the second commander aside and let the woman shine through.

A muted alarm sounded.

“Airen?” Malax asked.

Airen frowned at a console. “We’re showing a problem in an access conduit on the central deck.”

The war commander frowned. “Did we pick up a stowaway? Kantos?”

“There’s no sign we did. But it is close to the helian room.”

After he’d joined the crew, Donovan had learned that the Rengard had some top-secret, high-tech helian technology that helped run the systems on the warship. It also made it a target.

“I’ll check it over personally,” Airen said.

“I’ll come with you.” Donovan shifted toward the door.

She hesitated, but Malax nodded. “An excellent idea. You can show Donovan some of the internal systems.”

Airen was quiet as they walked down the corridor. He’d learned that she didn’t say too much unnecessarily. Finally, she stopped and pressed a palm to a maintenance door. It opened silently to uncover a tight maintenance conduit.

Turning sideways, they slid into the space.

When Donovan’s shoulder brushed hers, he saw her jolt.

“Do I upset you?” he asked.

“What?” Her black eyes, threaded with pale-green strands met his. “Of course not.”

“I feel like I make you nervous.”

She lifted her chin. “I’m still getting to know you.” She turned. “Here.”

She dropped down and opened a smaller conduit tunnel. She crawled inside, giving Donovan a glimpse of her slender, firm ass before she disappeared. He looked at the ceiling for a second, praying for some control. The last thing he needed was the second commander catching him with a hard-on tenting his uniform pants.

Dropping down, he followed her in.

“The damaged area is just up here,” she said.

She stopped. Together, they crouched in the conduit. He looked at the melted, burned-out patch of metal.

“What the cren?” she muttered.

“Something came through here.” Donovan arched his head, looking up through the incinerated hole above. The edges had dripped then solidified.

Her brow furrowed. “There’s nothing on scanners.”

“Some of these Kantos nasties are good at evading scanners.”

She turned again, and this time, Donovan got her toned ass just inches from his face. He swallowed a groan.

“There’s a trail of…something sticky.” Her frown deepened, as she gestured at the floor of the conduit.

Donovan saw the glittering trail and, as Airen started crawling to follow it, he followed her.

They turned a corner and a second later, he spotted a slug-like alien. It was leisurely eating one of the Rengard’s components.

“Is it Kantos?” he asked.

“I’m not sure,” she said.

The alien turned. It looked almost cute…until it bared a large set of fangs at them. Then it moved. Faster than any slug should move.

As it launched itself at him, Donovan grabbed it. Its squishy body oozed between his fingers, and its teeth snapped at his face.

Airen shoved in close and grabbed it as well.

“It’s slippery,” he warned.

The alien slipped free of their hands and landed with a slap in front of them. Before it could launch at them, Donovan hit it, knocking it against the wall.

“Pin it,” Airen yelled.

Donovan pulled his leg up and pressed his boot against the slug. It tried to slide free but he kept it pinned to the wall.

Airen’s armor shifted, a knife forming on her arm. She reached past Donovan, her body pressed against his, then stabbed the slug’s body.

The creature slumped.

She pulled back.

“Nice work, Second Commander.”

“You too, Sub-Captain.”

He pulled his boot back and watched the slug’s body lie motionless in the conduit. Then he turned his head and found his face inches from Airen’s.

She stilled, her gaze catching on his lips.

The air in the conduit charged.

“You have gorgeous eyes,” he murmured.

Something flared in them, the delicate strands of green glowing turquoise.

Unable to stop himself, Donovan leaned forward and touched his mouth to hers.

She gasped and pulled back. She licked her lips. Then suddenly, they were both moving. The next second, Airen Kann-Felis threw an arm around his neck and kissed the hell out of him.

Donovan groaned. She tasted so fucking good. He angled his head, deepening the kiss and heard her make a hungry, little sound.

Suddenly, Airen jerked back. Her cheeks were flushed with color. “This is inappropriate.”

“Two consenting adults enjoying each other?”

“We work together. Our species have an alliance.”

“That’s nothing we can’t work around. I’d like to know how you taste, Airen, all over.”

Her cheeks flared with color. “No.” She pulled back, her shoulders stiffening. She tossed her braided hair back over her shoulder. “I do not get involved with people I work with.”

“Airen—”

She shuffled back through the conduit and touched her communicator. “I need a small containment box brought to my location.”

“Yes, Second Commander,” a warrior responded.

Then her green-black eyes met Donovan’s gaze. “My error in judgement will not happen again, Sub-Captain.”

He raised a brow. “You aren’t attracted to me?”

Something indescribable flickered across her face. Then, she licked her lips and turned away.

No comment? Well, we’ll see, sweetheart. We’ll see. She definitely hadn’t said she didn’t want him.

It was a good thing Donovan was a patient man, and had always excelled at strategy.
