“You’re a cocky, arrogant ass,” a sharp female voice snapped.

Savannah and Hunt swiveled and saw Ryder on the dance floor, facing off with a stunning woman in a metallic, red dress.

“Uh-oh,” Hunt muttered.

The woman wasn’t pretty, exactly, but she was striking. Her brown hair was shot through with streaks of gold, and her face was all slim, sharp features. Her arms were very toned and she looked fit.

“Babe, I’m just confident,” Ryder said

The woman rolled her eyes and crossed her arms over her chest.

“Wow, a woman who’s not impressed with Ryder’s charm,” Savannah murmured.

Hunt grunted.

Ryder smiled and said something else to the woman, too low for Savannah to hear.

Then she didn’t see exactly what the woman did, but her leg moved and hooked Ryder’s ankle. He went down hard, flat on his back, in the middle of the dance floor.

The woman smiled, then turned, and stalked off, her red dress swishing behind her.

“Wow, she’s awesome,” Savannah breathed.

Ryder sat up, staring hungrily after the woman.

Hunt shook his head. “It’s lucky my brother has a hard head.”

Brynn saw Hunt walk in, loosening his tie. He had a rather impressive scowl on his face.

She snagged a bottle out of the ice-filled bucket on the deck and strode over. “Hey, need a beer?”

“Yeah.”

“You look tired.”

Her cousin’s scowl deepened. “Thanks to my new neighbor. They play their music too loud, at all hours of the day and night.”

“Oh.” Brynn smiled. “Surely a visit from the friendly neighborhood detective should sort that out.”

“She’s hard to pin down.” He sipped his beer. “Every time I knock, she’s not home or doesn’t answer.”

“She?” Interesting. Brynn narrowed her gaze on Hunt’s face. He seemed way more bent out of shape about this than her normally solid, in-control cousin should be.

“There’s something off about her. She sticks to herself. She’s cautious. There’s a story there, and I don’t trust her.”

“Mmm.” Brynn saw the interest in her cousin’s eyes. This looked much deeper than just a curious cop who didn’t like loud music. “What’s she look like?”

“I don’t know. Five foot five, slim build, blonde hair with a bit of a curl.”

In other words, he knew in great detail. “Did you run her?”

“Of course, I did. Clean as a whistle. Too clean.”

Brynn raised a brow. “You think her ID is fake?”

He took another sip of his beer. “If it is, it’s good.”

Hunt was on the trail now. Her cousin was stubborn, and he wouldn’t give up until he had answers.

Anna’s Holiday Giveaway

Thanks to all my amazing readers for an awesome year!

I had a super busy year, and have been so thrilled that so many readers have enjoyed all my books. Knowing my books help brighten someone’s day or help them escape reality for a little while always inspires me.

I have lots more action-packed romance planned for 2022. After a little holiday break, I’ll be starting back at work in January with Norcross Security, working on Hunter Morgan’s story, The Detective.

My first release of the new year will be the second Galactic Kings book, Emperor, coming out on the 18th of January.

A tell-tale tingle ran across the back of his neck, and he looked up to see Hunt coming his way.

The detective looked tired, his shirt rumpled and tie askew.

“Long day keeping the streets of San Francisco safe?” Vander asked.

Hunt grunted. “I know you help out with that. Usually by skirting the law.”

“Who, me?” Vander said, deadpan.

Hunt snorted again and sipped his drink.

“Coffee?” Vander raised a brow.

“Got to head back to the station after. Vander, you know Trucker Patterson, right?”

Vander stiffened. Not Trucker, again. “Yeah. Asshole of epic proportions.”

“But you have dealings with him and the Iron Wanderers.”

Vander stayed silent, waiting to see where Hunt was heading with this line of conversation.

The detective turned to him. “We both know you keep your fingers on the pulse of all the players in the city.”

“It pays to know what everyone’s up to.” It was how Vander kept control of his little slice of the world. He had a strong network of informants, and Ace could access just about anything, and that let Vander do his bit to protect his city.

“You’re a powerbroker in San Francisco. You can connect people, broker deals, and scare the shit out of people when required,” Hunt said.

“Where are you going with this?”

Some party guests jostled them. A woman laughed and Vander saw they were…sucking on candy that was shaped like pacifiers.

“Let’s talk on Ace’s roof deck,” Hunt suggested.

They hit the stairs. When Vander stepped onto the deck, a warm breeze tugged at his hair. Ace had a killer view of the city sprawl, and the water in the distance.

“The Wanderers are running drugs,” Hunt said.

A muscle ticked in Vander’s jaw. “I know, but Trucker keeps it to his club and close contacts. He knows if he sells that shit on the streets, or to kids, he’ll have problems.”

Hunt shook his head. “It’s my job to make sure he doesn’t sell that shit at all.”

“And we both know that life isn’t always black and white, Hunt. Your laws hinder you as much as they help.”

“You keep playing God, Vander, you’ll be tempted to step over the line.”

“I have good balance,” Vander said.

Hunt blew out a breath. “Trucker’s also running weapons. Building up a little arsenal.”

Vander stiffened. “Really?”

“He’s keeping it very quiet. We arrested a low-level member who let it slip.”

Fuck. Then Vander took another sip of beer. “He wants a war.”

“He’s got problems with the Burning Devils MC. But I’m also getting whispers that he’s got out-of-town interest. Looking to muscle in.”

Vander’s mouth flattened. They didn’t need out-of-towners trying to strong-arm their way in.

“Word is, this new player wants to expand the drug trade.”

Hell, no. “I’ll handle it.”

“Let the law try, first.”

“You need proof that will hold up in court. I don’t. Your way will take too long.”

“Not if I have someone undercover in the club.”

Vander cocked his head. “That’s a dangerous game. If Trucker sniffs them out, he’ll send them back in pieces.”

“You owe me quite a few favors.”

Fuck. Vander knew where this was going. “Hunt—”

“Lots. I’ve cleaned up after you and your guys numerous times.”

“And I’ve helped you in return.”

“I know, but you still cause me headaches.”

Vander blew out a breath.

“Trucker trusts you,” Hunt said.

“No, he doesn’t.”

“Okay, he’s scared of you. I need you to vouch for my undercover officer and help them get into the Wanderers.”

Shit. “They get found out, they’re dead.”

“They won’t.” Hunt paused. “Remember, you owe me.”

Vander scraped a hand through his hair. “Fine. Your guy better be good.”

“She is.”

Vander stiffened. A woman? “No.”

“Yes. Come to the station tomorrow, and we’ll talk.” Hunt headed for the stairs. “Bye, Vander.”

Vander felt like throwing his beer bottle. He took another sip, instead. Some female cop wanted to prance into the most dangerous motorcycle club in the city, it wasn’t his problem.

The beer tasted like oil.

Fuck. He headed back inside.

Rome watched Sofie chatting with a group of guests. One woman gestured to the Sapphire Wave tiara and Sofie nodded.

Turning away, he scanned the crowd. Nothing was amiss.

Ace arrived at his side, looking sharp in a dark gray tuxedo and a checked, silver bowtie. “Hanging in there?”

Rome grunted.

“I almost want something to happen.” Ace crossed his arms, his gaze roving, then it jerked and tracked back to the dancers.

Rome followed the direction he was looking…and spotted Maggie dancing with a tall, tuxedo-clad man.

The man spun her, dipping her back, and Maggie laughed.

“What the fuck is she wearing?” Ace muttered.

Rome thought Maggie cleaned up nicely. Her dark hair gleamed and her eyes were dark and smoky. She wore a sleek bronze dress that showcased her long, lean body, and had a long slit up one side that showed off a toned leg. The dress dipped low in front, but as her entranced dance partner spun her, it showed that the back was virtually nonexistent.

“A dress,” Rome said.

“And who the fuck is he?” Ace scowled. “He could be an asshole, a rapist, a murderer. And she’s letting him paw her.”

The guy was holding the helicopter pilot close, but not overstepping any lines. Maggie would have no problem punching anyone who did something she didn’t like.

“I think they’re just dancing.” Rome let his gaze move across the room to Sofie.

She was with Harlow, Gia, and Haven, as well as Liana. They were all oohing over a jewelry display.

Ace shook his head. “I’m going to tell that pretty boy to keep his hands to himself.” Ace stomped off toward the dance floor.

Shit. Ace was going to get a fist to the gut from Maggie if he kept this up.

King Gayel Solann-Eon sat at the head of the long dining table. The senior warriors from the Rengard and Desteron, and their mates, talked and laughed and ate.

The kitchen of the Woomera Range Complex had worked hard to prepare a feast they believed was worthy for a king. The sunset outside the window of the testing facility was impressive. Red, pink and gold streaked across the vast sky.

He was heading to Space Corps Headquarters in Houston tomorrow, before traveling back to Eon to prepare for the Earth delegation to arrive. He was glad he’d managed this short visit to Earth.

And it was good to see his warriors and their mates.

A sensation moved through his gut. He recognized it as envy. It was a familiar emotion. As a young prince growing up, he’d had a lot of lavish extravagances, always known that one day he would be king. But he’d always envied his people the simple things of life. Things far out of his reach.

Yes, he envied his warriors and their mates. That deep connection between the couples.

His father had been set in his ways, but Gayel had never doubted that the man had loved his mate, Gayel’s mother. But mating was rare for the Eon, although their best scientists were working to discover why so many mates seemed to be coming from among the Terrans.

Maybe he’d get lucky and his mate would be one of the candidates for his wife.

He squashed that thought. It didn’t matter. He would marry a Terran. The new genetic material to the Eon line would be beneficial, and the marriage would cement an alliance with Earth. He’d been impressed with the Terran resilience, fortitude, and ingenuity.

Gayel had been raised knowing he had a duty.

To his people.

To his Empire.

His own happiness wasn’t a factor.

He would do what was best for the Eon Empire, even if he had to sacrifice his own wants and needs.

He hoped he could find a wife with intelligence and compassion, a partner to stand at his side.

Gayel had spent a lot of time undoing the restrictive rules of his father’s reign. He wanted to do more for his Empire, to watch it flourish.

He watched Davion lean close to his mate, the two of them smiling. Then he looked at the newest mated couple. Thane and Kaira shared a private look, their attraction tangible.

Gayel lifted his drink. He was unlikely to have a mate, but he would do his duty and treat his wife with respect.

And he would do what had to be done to protect his empire and end the Kantos threat.
