I thought the writing was really good (like, the whole time I was reading it I was jealous I couldn't write like that--the voice was so unique and everything was lyrical), and it explored the types of relationships that aren't usually explored. And the symbolism--with the painting (and other things I can't remember now, but I'm sure there were so many more motifs)--gah. That was so cleverly interwoven. It also had a bunch of allusions to things that I like, which was kind of fun and made it a bit more personal. Like you said, it's not my favorite book of all time, but it's up there. I think it's beautiful and important, and I'm still recommending it to everybody! :)
