Have You Read?
Kathleen, he has written the Borderlands sandbox, but the place is not his, it's one of those shared universes that were big in fantasy in the 80s, like Liavek... His books are often set in his invented settings in Newford which is a Northeastern formerly industrial city, which is now rusting, yet there is magic and homelessness. More recently he's set his books in the Southwest, also an invented place where magic is found among gang life. Waifs and Strays is unusual because it is short stories intended for the YA market, set in Newford, Toronto, Ottawa and two of my favorite of his Borderland stories...Based on many of the reviews here, where some of the negative ones have similar squicks to mine, I think not, not now...

HYR Storm Front by Jim Butcher
? (Some readers think
which is #3, I think, is a better entrée...)
I read several Harry Dresden books years ago (before I was on Goodreads), but lost interest in the series at some point; although I can't remember why. I have often thought of resuming and may yet do so. I think I was pass book 3, but can't be certain without checking it out of the library to see if I remember reading it.
And you may be correct about Heinlein.
Kindling the Moon had a ending that I haven't found often in urban fantasy. I did see the twist coming, but it isn't a place most authors would go. I plan to move on to book 2 in this series soon.
HYR The Testing* (The Testing, Book 1) by Joelle Charbonneau
?
I am several chapters into it right now and it is excellent!

The reviews here aren't very positive and some of my squicks in uf reportedly are here: a not -terribly bright heroine, who acts without responsibility, sex for the sake of sex, and poor word choice. Does it get better?HYR Love Letters to the Dead by Ava Dellaira
? I haven't looked at the reviews here yet, because I haven't written mine yet, but I really liked it!

I read this book several years ago shortly after it was originally published. It was a debut novel by a new urban fantasy author. I thought that she created a believable, new different world, and that it was a decent first book, and I don't remember having the same criticisms as the reviewer whom you quoted. All of her later books received 4/5 star overall ratings. The potential was there in the first book, even with a few flaws.

It looks like one I'd like. Have you read it, Kathleen? The reviewers here say it' s not like any other books.
