Yes, I liked Enclave. My review is our book reads discussion since it was a former Book of the Month. One of the better done dystopian young adult novels. Scary believable. Author based a lot of it on the "Life After People" series on the History Channel.

Yes, I have read Hounded and all the other books in the Iron Druid series. First rate urban fantasy series.

Kathleen Burket (kathleengigicompany) | 20125 comments Mod
Shannon K. Butcher writes paranormal romance. The only significant difference that I've found between paranormal romance and urban fantasy is the inevitable sex scene in the former. Shannon K. Butcher's sex scenes are not the raciest out there. You can easily skip that scene and still enjoy the rest of the story.

No, I am behind on my Harry Dresden.

HYR Mastering the Art of French Cooking by Julia Child Mastering the Art of French Cooking (Vol. 1) by Julia Child ?

Julia | 11782 comments I didn't know that about The Joy of Cooking. My copies are from 1964, but I probably bought them in the 80's, with the price tags still on them- new for $3.95 and $3.50!

When the movie "Julie and Julia" came out I made Julia Child's ratatouille. It was very good. Though I have looked at Mastering the Art of French Cooking,I do not have my own copy.

Julia wrote: "I haven't Kathleen, should I? I read a lot of urban fantasy, but prefer it not be Romance with a capital r, or pnr. Is it? . . .

Allie Beckstrom is very definitely urban fantasy. Devon Monk's writing has been compared to Patricia Briggs or Jim Butcher. Allie has a boyfriend, Zayvion Jones, that she acquires in the first book. There is a romantic element in the books, but I would compare it to Patricia Briggs' Mercy Thompson in that it is more urban fantasy than romance. It is a very original series whose premise is different from most urban fantasy series. The first third of the first book is a little slow. If we could give 4.5 stars on Goodreads, that would have been my rating, but I rolled it up to 5 stars. The others that I've read have all been a solid 5 stars. You just have to allow for some world building in the beginning of any new urban fantasy series. There is a little more romance in the first book than in any of the later books, but again I think that was part of the world building, in that particular case to establish the relationship between Allie and Zay. Yes, I would recommend this series for you or any urban fantasy fan.

HYR War for the Oaks by Emma Bull . . . ?"

No, Seelie and unseelie courts seem to be a common premise in both urban fantasy and paranormal romance these days. Is this a good choice for a fae story?

HYR The Mark of Athena (Heroes of Olympus, Book 3) by Rick Riordan The Mark of Athena (Heroes of Olympus, #3) by Rick Riordan ?

message 93: by Julia (new)

Julia | 11782 comments Kathleen, I think I'd like Magic to the Bone and I think you should see if you can get hold of War for the Oaks. When she wrote it, it wasn't common. It's one of the first urban fantasy novels. The characters are musicians in Minneapolis during Prince's heydey. The music is almost as important as the fairies...

no, I haven't read any Rick Riordan.

I've put War for the Oaks on my to-be-read list. If you enjoyed the Harry Potter books you would enjoy Rick Riordan, but I would recommend that you start with The Lightning Thief. The Mark of Athena is the most recent, but the eighth book set in this world.

I have not read Temping Fate.
