HYR No Right Turn* by Terry Trueman No Right Turn by Terry Trueman ?

*I am reading this book with a small group in one of our sections of English 10. The group is all boys, who don't usually like to read, but they are all gearheads and love this book.

message 356: by Julia (new)

Julia | 11782 comments It sounds like a great book for these guys! HNR No Right Turn. Probably won't, but I'm glad you found it for them.

I quite liked Jackaby, but I'm also a fan of Sherlock Holmes, (not just Benedict Cumberbatch's 'Sherlock,' but all incarnations of the character) Doctor Who and stuff like that...

Reading is reading, have you tried graphic novels with these young men like Saints and Boxers by Gene Luen Yang Boxers (Boxers & Saints, #1) by Gene Luen Yang and Saints (Boxers & Saints, #2) by Gene Luen Yang ?

message 357: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen Burket (kathleengigicompany) | 20125 comments Mod
We can only use one graphic novel per year in our curriculum and we intersperse the graphic version of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein with the Retold Classic Novel: Frankenstein version. This is a class for struggling readers. One of the class novels for our 9th graders is Gene Luen Yang's American Born Chinese.

HYR Game* by Walter Dean Myers Game by Walter Dean Myers

*I am reading this novel with a group of boys in a different section of English 10. No gearheads in that section, but a small group of dedicated basketball fans.

message 358: by Julia (new)

Julia | 11782 comments FYI, Walter Dean Myers, Chris Crutcher and Catherine Gilbert Murdock all write often about teens defined by their sports...

For myself, I read fantasy, urban fantasy, scifi, and mysteries mostly or I read the various books that are part of the curriculum. We read some short stories in English 11 and those are often stories by the romantic writers such as Edgar Allan Poe. A sip from the The Cask of Amontillado?

HYR Frenchtown Summer* by Robert Cormier Frenchtown Summer by Robert Cormier ?

*I am in the middle of it. Its text is written as poetry and I am finding it very engaging.

message 362: by Julia (new)

Julia | 11782 comments Yes, I have. I went through a Robert Cormier phase some years back and read everything of his I could find. But I don't think I ever taught him, as I did Chris Crutcher, Walter Dean Myers and aLois McMaster Bujold novella.

HYR Witness by Karen Hesse Witness by Karen Hesse ? It's also a YA novel written in poetry.

HYR Black Horses for the King by Anne McCaffrey Black Horses for the King by Anne McCaffrey ?

I have a rule that I don't read books set in the cold, when it's cold outside. It just makes it seem colder and lonelier and like rescue and warmth is less likely.

HYR The Canterbury Tales* by Geoffrey Chaucer The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer ?

I know the stories of The Canterbury Tales, but if I've read it, it was a very long time ago. So we'll call that a 'no.'
