Fall Challenge 2010 Completed Tasks (do NOT delete any posts in this thread)

Total Points: 40
5.9 Comfort Read -- Read The Other Boleyn Girl by Philippa Gregory
OPTIONAL: Tell us why you consider this a comfort read--I had a hard time choosing a book for this task because there's so many books/genres that I consider to be a comfort to read, but I chose this book because I love historical fiction and it's something familiar to me and a type of genre where I know how the writing's going to be. I consider historical fiction to be a great genre to cuddle up with a blanket and read.
15.9 -- Coin Collector
I rolled 2 The Hell With It! coins, so I had to read 700 or more pages. I read three books for this challenge to meet the requirements. These books were:
Lucky by Alice Sebold (251 pages)
Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins (390 pages) and
Seven Days of Rage: The Deadly Crime Spree of the Craigslist Killer by Paul LaRosa (209 pages) totaling 850 pages.
20.7 Erin NY's Task (Shorter is Sweeter)-- The Melting Pot
I read Shanghai Girls by Lisa See

15.5 - Literature Map
The Mark Of The Assassin by Daniel Silva
I typed in James Rollins as my author, and Daniel Silva was one of the new authors the map pulled up. I can see the similarities, but I wasn't really crazy about the book.

1. Fall Leaf Color Title - The Red Pyramid by Rick Riordan (9/17/10) - BIG BOOK: 516 pages
10 Point Tasks
1. Short Stories/Novellas - The Further Observations of Lady Whistledown by Julia Quinn, Suzanne Enoch, Karen Hawkins, Mia Ryan (9/24/10) - GOODREADS AUTHOR: Julia Quinn
4. Natural Setting - Nobody's Prize by Esther M. Friesner (9/9/10)
(This book is about Helen of Troy as a young girl and how she secretly joins Jason's adventure to seek the golden fleece. The majority of the book takes place either on a ship or in a caravan or outside in other ways...)
6. Pink Cover -

9. Flashlight-Worth Book - Dealing with Dragons by Patricia C. Wrede (Mother/Daughter Book Club) (9/21/10)
This book was pretty good... I'm not sure if I'd have risked staying up late with a flashlight to read it when I was younger, but it was good! I'm interested in reading the other 3 books in the series!
15 Point Tasks
6. One Hit Wonder - Twilight: The Graphic Novel, Volume 1 by Stephenie Meyer (9/28/10)
(This is Stephenie Meyer's only graphic novel.)
8. Artist - Portrait Of My Heart by Patricia Cabot (9/4/10)
(The heroine of this romance novel is an artist, and one of her paintings plays an important part in the plot of the story.)
9. 2 Heads (300pp) - Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia & Margaret Stohl (9/20/10) - BIG BOOK: 563 pages - GOODREADS AUTHORS: Kami Garcia & Margaret Stohl (not sure if I get one or two for that...)
20 Point Tasks
4. Mrs.soule - Movie Scene - On the Way to the Wedding by Julia Quinn (9/21/10) - GOODREADS AUTHOR: Julia Quinn
(My favorite movie is probably While You Were Sleeping and this book has a very similar plot, except with the hero/heroine roles reversed—falling "in love" at first sight with one person, but realizing that it's someone else that they REALLY love...)
8. Nancy - Pirate Talk: "ARR" - The Marriage Bargain by Diane Perkins (9/3/10)
10. Group Read - Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins (9/8/10)

The Ruins - Scott B. Smith. Yes, a horror novel is my comfort read. One of my favourites.
Also, the paperback version has 509 pages, but the copy that's on Goodreads is the hardcover which only has 300+ pages ... so I'm not sure if this qualifies?

#5.4 I'm Glad My Mother Didn't Name Me ... Georgette
I love Ms. Heyer's books, but in this day & age I'd be called 'Georgie' & I wouldn't like that!
The Toll-Gate by Georgette Heyer
#15.5 Literature Map
I typed in Julia Quinn and got Susan Elizabeth Phillips as one of the associated choices, so I read
It Had to Be You
Julia Quinn writes historical romance, and this S.E. Phillips book is a contemporary about football, so the comparison was a bit of a stretch for me - but for picking an author in a different genre, it was OK.
#20.5 Oprah's On!

I really liked this book- it was touching and the author described the neighborhoods and surroundings so well, I felt I could visualize them, even though I’m not familiar with the historic Chinese and Japanese neighborhoods in Seattle.

Actually, you get 2 big book tickets because it's over 750 pages ;o).

The paperback version with 509 pages is under other editions (on the right hand side of the screen under the pictures of book covers) so, yes, it qualifies.

I chose from the Graphic novels list.

This was based on my favorite movie scenario of post-apocalyptic recovery. A disaster changes the world and how they must cope. Movies like "The Road", "Children of Men" or "I am Legend". This book tells how the world deals with the loss of North America. The economic, political, and military ramifications.

10.1 short stories and essays....
The Beauty of the Beasts: Tales of Hollywood's Wild Animal Stars by Ralph Helfer
3 stars
Mr. Helfer's work memoir, written in the form of short stories/essays, tells of his years of training hundreds of species animals to perform in movies. I had a hard time rating this book, because my feelings, while reading it, were so contradictory. I love learning about animal behavior and can't imagine a better job than working with a variety of animals. Many of his animals were "rescued" from abusive environments. He took them in and treated them with affection, which I had to appreciate. However, I don't feel animals were put on this earth to serve as entertainment for people. I felt my blood boiling as he described dressing up an orangutan in a tux and giving him a Coke to drink.

September, October, and November are the 9th, 10th and 11th months of the year. For this task, read two books (totaling to at least 400 pages) that are either the ninth, tenth, or eleventh books in a series. For example in the Jack Reacher series by Lee Child- One Shot is number 9, The Hard Way is number 10, and Bad Luck and Trouble is number 11. In the Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris Dead and Gone is 9, Touch of Dead is 10, and Dead in the Family is 11. Books may be read in series order or by publication date. You do not have to read the same author for both books. Enjoy!!

5.4 - I’m glad my mother didn’t name me… - Smitten by Janet Evanovich
The main character's name is Lizabeth. And thank goodness my mother named me Elizabeth instead of Lizabeth. My name is often erroneously shortened to Liz and it drives me bonkers. I am Beth, please and thank you!!!! And Lizabeth vs. Elizabeth couldn’t be anything but Liz, right?
Anyone else who’s a part of the Elizabeth, Elisabeth, Bethany, Liz, Beth, Bess, Betsy, Betty, Elisa, etc. club can probably relate—don’t you just hate it when somebody chooses to use the wrong nickname? Because I sure do! Ugh! :P

Taking the plot line and themes of this book into consideration, I think this was the ultimate banned book.
----
10.6 - pink cover - Light on Snow by Anita Shreve

I had this book approved in the help thread. My version’s cover is one-third hot pink and the snow and trees on the bottom two-thirds have a light pink tinge to them.
----
20.4 - the plot line thickens - The Secret Diaries of Miss Miranda Cheever by Julia Quinn (Goodreads author)
My favorite movies are romantic period dramas and my favorite scenario is when they kiss! So I read a regency romance.
----
20.9 - babies - Good Night, Sleep Tight: The Sleep Lady's Gentle Guide to Helping Your Child Go to Sleep , Stay Asleep, And Wake Up Happy by Kim West
This book was approved in the help thread.
I liked this one a little more than some of the other baby sleep primers out there. What the author proposed was a good match for our family’s needs and we’ve been able to comfortably incorporate many of these ideas into our lifestyle, which I can’t say for some of the other big players in the baby sleep field, such as Ferber, Sears, Ezzo, Hogg & Pantley.
On a non-book related tangent, I think this video should be required viewing for all moms before they’re allowed to chat with other moms or post their opinions on the internet about raising babies. Hi-freakin-larious:
