I had no idea the second book in the Inside Out series was out! What am I waiting for?!

message 452: by Shadow Jubilee (last edited Mar 29, 2011 04:33PM) (new)

Shadow Jubilee (uhqs) Naturally, a day spending money at a bookstore isn't complete without a stop by the library (actually, went to the library first to return a couple of books). Today I checked out

Death's Excellent Vacation (Includes Night Huntress, #4.5; Sookie Stackhouse, #10.1; Aisling Grey #4.5) by Charlaine Harris and Love in the Time of Dragons (Light Dragons, #1) by Katie MacAlister .

I returned Swimming Without a Net (Fred the Mermaid, #2) by MaryJanice Davidson , which I actually liked a little better than the first book, and Clockwork Angel (The Infernal Devices, #1) by Cassandra Clare , which I never got around to finishing after reading the first couple of pages. I would have renewed it but someone placed it on hold. Hmph.

I forgot to mention the books I'd borrowed earlier:

Princess of the Midnight Ball by Jessica Day George Fish Out of Water (Fred the Mermaid, #3) by MaryJanice Davidson Artemis Fowl (Artemis Fowl, #1) by Eoin Colfer Vampire Academy (Vampire Academy, #1) by Richelle Mead Storm Glass (Glass, #1) by Maria V. Snyder

I also returned unread

A Matter of Magic (Mairelon the Magician & The Magician's Ward) by Patricia C. Wrede

Amy J. | 686 comments I just checked out Veronika Decides to Die by Paulo Coelho by Paulo Coelho and The Solitude of Prime Numbers by Paolo Giordano by Paolo Giordano on Tuesday. And I just got a recall notice for latter. I'm annoyed. I just got the book and I get less than 1 week to read it. Which means I better get to it. I hate the pressure!

message 454: by Jessica-Robyn (new)

Jessica-Robyn | 69 comments I just love the library, but last time I went in telling myself not to get anything and ended up snapping out of my daze on the walk home when I realised how heavy my bag was. I actually had to return a few things without even looking at them because the pile was so high. I have so little will power.
Browsing Pick Ups (that I actually intend to read):
The Disappearing Spoon And Other True Tales of Madness, Love, and the History of the World from the Periodic Table of the Elements by Sam Kean The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie (Flavia de Luce, #1) by Alan Bradley Stealing Heaven by Elizabeth Scott Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher
Requests:
XVI by Julia Karr Cloaked in Red by Vivian Vande Velde 1st to Die (Women's Murder Club Series #1) by James Patterson The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (Millennium, #1) by Stieg Larsson The Help by Kathryn Stockett Steel by Carrie Vaughn Vixen (Flappers, #1) by Jillian Larkin Fruits Basket, Volume 1 by Natsuki Takaya (高屋 奈月)

message 455: by Kellyflower (new)

Kellyflower | 248 comments Jessica-Robyn ,
I'm currently reading XVI, so far so good. Fruits Basket, Volume 1 was confusing to me, but I do like the TV series. The series is almost word for word the same as the books/manga, but because it's in color it was a lot less confusing to me. I could actually tell the characters apart.

I'm also reading Death Most Definite (Death Works, #1) by Trent Jamieson and I just picked up The Dark and Hollow Places (The Forest of Hands and Teeth, #3) by Carrie Ryan

message 456: by Sashana (new)

Sashana Awesome picks Jessica-Robyn. I would read just about everything you picked out.

message 457: by Kristina (new)

Kristina (kristinalawhead) I checked out the last 3 Percy Jackson books

message 458: by Sashana (new)

Sashana Is the series good, Kristina? I only read the first book and I wasn't really impressed.

message 459: by Kristina (new)

Kristina (kristinalawhead) I really like it but...I really liked the first book! haha so if you weren't impressed with it, I don't know if you would enjoy the rest then :)

message 460: by Jessica-Robyn (new)

Jessica-Robyn | 69 comments Kellyflower I'm excited for XVI though a little worried, I haven't always been big on dystopian novels but the plot seems interesting and it's great to hear that your liking it so far. As for Fruits Basket I've also seen the anime and loved it but hadn't thought about keep track of all the characters in the manga! Here's hoping I can keep my head on straight as their being introduced!

Sashana Thanks! This year with all of my reading I'm trying to choose some of the more discussed/notable books especially in YA. If you have any personal recommendations send them on over! :)

What is a recall notice?

message 463: by Rachel (new)

Rachel (treychel) | 1484 comments I was curious what a recall notice was too...

message 464: by Amy J. (new)

Amy J. | 686 comments Someone else wants to check the book out, so I have to return it within a few days.

message 465: by Rachel (new)

Rachel (treychel) | 1484 comments Well too bad. They should just put it on hold then. That's, for a lack of a better word to show my feelings, shitty! Isn't that what a hold request is for?

(Obviously, I am not bitching/mad at you Amy, but your library. I reread what I wrote and thought, hmmmm, she might take that the wrong way. Lol.)

Somehow, that doesn't sound fair that you have to return a book early. My library only lets you check out high demand, new releases for 2 weeks and won't let you renew it if there are holds. But, I can't imagine bringing it back early. What if you're too busy? I wouldn't want to pay a fine because I have to work and can't make it that day.

message 467: by Amy J. (new)

Amy J. | 686 comments Well it's pisses me off too. I have half a mind to do the same thing to them next week. But I did finish the book this afternoon, so it's not a huge deal.

They have a different system because it's the University library. And grad students can check books out for a semester. Faculty for a year. This was 2 week loan so you'd think the person could be a bit patient. When you search for a book in the system you can see when it's due and how it's been checked out, so its not like the requester couldn't see it was due back on the 14th anyway.

message 468: by Rachel (new)

Rachel (treychel) | 1484 comments Huh. Interesting. Well at least you got to finish it. I only checked out one or two books from my university library and decided it was not worth it. One week check out period, no rechecks without it being put back into the system first and .25 cents a day late fee. Personally, I couldn't handle it. Lol.

message 469: by Kristen (new)

Kristen | 223 comments @Rachel - How in the heck did the university think people could do research with one week check-outs? That's crazy! I don't know how many books I have checked out from the university library for research and have kept them for months. I think ours is check-out for one month at a time, but you can then recheck it out if you're not finished with it. Overall it's a pretty lax system...even though they keep sending my husband a fee for having a late return (he graduated four years ago, but apparently they're not giving up. lol).

message 470: by Rachel (new)

Rachel (treychel) | 1484 comments Ooops. Let me be a little more specific. Scholarly books you get for two weeks. Novels and other materials are one week. But still!

Haha. By now, they have probably wasted enough in postage, ink, and paper they should just give it up. Some people are such 'tards!

message 471: by Jex (new)

Up Close and Dangerous by Linda Howard - McKettrick's Luck by Linda Lael Miller - Marley & Me Love and Life with the World's Worst Dog by John Grogan - The Tenth Circle by Jodi Picoult

message 475: by Shadow Jubilee (new)

Shadow Jubilee (uhqs) I thought that The Tenth Circle by Jodi Picoult was quite interesting, particularly the way the author chose to include graphic art into the story. I heard that there are clues in that art that will eventually spell out something. I never got around to hunting for those clues but perhaps you might wish to. :)

I've had these out for a while but never got around to posting them:

The Snow Queen by Mercedes Lackey
Veil of Shadows by Shiloh Walker
The Last Sacrifice by Richelle Mead
Up in Smoke by Katie MacAlister
Love in the Time of Dragons by Katie MacAlister
Wither by Lauren DeStefano
The Viking Takes a Knight by Sandra Hill

and more recently

Nine Rules to Break When Romancing a Rake by Sarah Maclean
Vision in White by Nora Roberts

BJ Rose (bjrose) | 253 comments Thanks for that bit of info, niquae - I'll pay more attention to the graphic art & see if it tells me anything.

Shadow Jubilee (uhqs) Sarah, what did you think of Wondrous Strange? I thought that it could have been better and wasn't sure I'd like the other two books but I ended up liking them better - I think.

You and I have Nine Rules to Break When Romancing a Rake out together. :)

I liked Princess of the Midnight Ball. I'll be reading more of George, I think.

I returned Princess of the Midnight Ball before I got a chance to read it :( I reached my limit for books out and I had books on hold to be picked up. I'm going to try checking it out again. Did you like it?

Sarah Dizon (sarahd828) | 380 comments Kristina - Queen of the Dead is a great book! I loved it!

Kellyflower - How is Blood Red Road and Imaginary Girls? I can't seem to find those at my local library, I either have to go to one by my mom's house or buy them. Did you like Passion?

Lacy - Unearthly is a really good book! I enjoyed it. I haven't read Passion yet, but since Torment kind of disappointed me I wasn't in a rush to buy Passion so I'm thinking I'll just check it out from the library. Let me know what you think. I have City of Fallen Angels but I haven't read it yet, I've heard really good things about it though except for that it has a huge cliffhanger.

I really liked Unearthly

message 491: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Dizon (sarahd828) | 380 comments Kellyflower - Aww that makes me so sad that Passion isn't very good. I was disappointed with Torment. The first book really blew me away. The only reason I'm keeping Fallen and Torment is because I got them signed by Lauren Kate at an event, otherwise, I would give them away. I think there was just too much hype going on with the books. I loved Unearthly! I'm so glad I read it and I would read it again. Have you read Nightshade by Andrea Cremer? I really liked that one and I think anyone who likes YA would enjoy it.
