Rachel (treychel) | 1484 comments I am in no way religious or a Christian, but The Shack I found to be really, really good, regardless. I think you will enjoy it.

message 302: by Rachel (new)

Rachel (treychel) | 1484 comments I hope that the Doyle series is better than her stand alone, Going Bovine. That book was a waste of my time, and I rarely say that. I can always find something nice to say about a book...not this time!

message 303: by Jen (new)

Jen (jencroup) Erika, I hated the Shack. I can't think of one thing I liked about that book, so I'm curious about what you think of it when you are done.

message 304: by Shay (new)

Shay | 923 comments I just picked up, at the library:
Killer On A Hot Tin Roof
The Last Samurai: The Life and Battles of Saigo Takamori
The Book about Blanche and Marie- a 1001 Book
The Witches of Eastwick
The Finkler Question, which won the 2010 Man Booker Prize

I started reading Killer on a Hot Tin Roof, a cozy mystery, first. (Obviously.)

message 305: by Shadow Jubilee (new)

Shadow Jubilee (uhqs) Another Man's Baby by Kay Stockham

I've gotten my sister to start reading e-books through the public library's digital library system. This is the first book she requested me to borrow. :)

But I wasn't too impressed with it. I had liked the first book we had read by Kay Stockham better, which happened to be the book after this one.

Looks like I won't be reading Wondrous Strange and Dead Before Dark before they are due so I'll probably check them out at a later date. I'm not interested in reading them now.

message 306: by Shadow Jubilee (new)

Shadow Jubilee (uhqs) I did manage to read Wondrous Strange that I had borrowed, but not Dead Before Dark.

I borrowed Darklight by lesley Livingston.

message 307: by Jen (new)

Jen (jencroup) niquae how was Wondrous Strange. I've been thinking about reading it but I wasn't sure if I'd like it or not.

message 308: by Shadow Jubilee (new)

Shadow Jubilee (uhqs) To be honest, I didn't really like it as much as I wanted to. I liked the premise of the book, but I didn't particularly care for its execution. The writing style was nothing remarkable, the dialogue was sometimes a bit awkward, and the characters were not well developed and didn't grow. Certain plot developments were glossed over. There was not much character introspection, which I thought would have given the book more depth. The romance was not very believable. As I wrote in my review, the more I read, the more distant I felt from both characters and book. I couldn't wait to finish it.

What I did like about the book was the way the author integrated Shakespeare and Celtic myths into the storyline. I also liked the little bits of humor I came across. It made me laugh out loud. Unfortunately, that wasn't enough to keep me from being disappointed with the book.

That said, I am interested in seeing the HEA so I am going to try to read the next two books in the trilogy. I'm on the waiting list for Tempestuous. If you do plan on reading this book, I would recommend reading books 2 & 3 close together. I have read that Darklight ends in a cliffhanger.

message 309: by Alyssa (new)

Alyssa (shyluck13) A big haul this week:
Strike Zone (Richmond Rogues, #3) by Kate Angell 13 to Life (13 to Life, #1) by Shannon Delany How to Take the Ex Out of Ex-Boyfriend by Janette Rallison The Ex Games (Simon Romantic Comedies) by Jennifer Echols Saving Francesca by Melina Marchetta Stealing Heaven by Elizabeth Scott Just Like That by Marsha Qualey The Keepers' Tattoo by Gill Arbuthnott As You Wish by Jackson Pearce . There was another one but it's flown out of my mind.

message 310: by BJ Rose (new)

BJ Rose (bjrose) | 253 comments I didn't read any library books in December, but now that the holidays are over and company's gone, I've requested
Shakespeare's Landlord (A Lily Bard Mystery, #1) by Charlaine Harris - The Giver (The Giver, #1) by Lois Lowry - Gathering Blue (The Giver, #2) by Lois Lowry

message 311: by Jen (new)

Jen (jencroup) niquae wrote: "To be honest, I didn't really like it as much as I wanted to. I liked the premise of the book, but I didn't particularly care for its execution. The writing style was nothing remarkable, the dialog..."

I keep hearing that from people....that this book is a let down, I think I'm going to skip it. Thanks for your thoughts on it.

Ashley ~twisted_illusions~ (twisted_illusions) | 67 comments I got Halfway to the Grave (Night Huntress, #1) by Jeaniene Frost Stray (Shifters, #1) by Rachel Vincent Poison Study (Study, #1) by Maria V. Snyder and I'm waiting on Fragile Eternity (Wicked Lovely, #3) by Melissa Marr Nightshade (Nightshade, #1) by Andrea Cremer

message 313: by Alyssa (new)

Alyssa (shyluck13) Ashley - Nightshade was pretty good, I guess. Didn't meet my expectations but it was wonderful. I've had my eye on Stray for a while now! Nice haul!

message 314: by Shadow Jubilee (new)

Shadow Jubilee (uhqs) JenC wrote: "niquae wrote: "To be honest, I didn't really like it as much as I wanted to. I liked the premise of the book, but I didn't particularly care for its execution. The writing style was nothing remarka..."

You're welcome, JenC.

I know I'm going to regret it but I actually went ahead and check out physical books from the library instead of digital. I already know I'm going to have to pay a late fee for the DVD that is due next week...

The Secret Wedding by Jo Beverley
The Secret Duke by Jo Beverley
Steamed by Katie MacAlister
The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan
and the DVD of The Princess and the Frog :)

And the library I went to apparently does not have or have checked out: City of Bones, Vampire Academy, and the Jeaniene Frost book. -_-;

message 315: by Rachel (new)

Rachel (treychel) | 1484 comments Picked up Some We Love, Some We Hate, Some We Eat Why It's So Hard to Think Straight About Animals by Hal Herzog Petals on the Wind (Dollanganger, #2) by V.C. Andrews Daughter of Darkness by V.C. Andrews and Lost & Found by Jacqueline Sheehan today. Really excited for Daughter of Darkness. I would like to see what Andrews can add to this genre!

message 316: by Lisa S (new)

Lisa S (kasey_k_fan) Rachel, I bought Daughter of Darkness about a month ago. Haven't started it yet. I have just about every Andrews book there is. Although I can tell a difference in the writing style since Ms. Andrews died and her family has taken over.

message 317: by Sabrina (last edited Jan 06, 2011 04:56AM) (new)

Sabrina Waddle (breewaddle) Nevermore (Nevermore, #1) by Kelly Creagh Chains of Ice (The Chosen Ones, #3) by Christina Dodd Eternal Seduction (A Darkness Within, #1) by Jennifer Turner Crescendo by Becca Fitzpatrick Are the latest ones I've checked out...

message 318: by Liz (new)

Liz Fichera (lizfichera) My last library download to my nook was TOM HORN AND THE APACHE KID. Tom Horn and the Apache Kid (Leisure Historical Fiction) by Andrew J. Fenady

I'm a total sucker for a good western. The book was kick-butt fab.

message 319: by Rachel (new)

Rachel (treychel) | 1484 comments Lisa, I didn't know she had died. That's awful. I hate when people who are good at what they do leave us. Something is always left to be desired and no one ever does it as good as that person!

The only Andrews book I have read is Flowers in the Attic and that was recently. I have been meaning to read her novels for a long time and finally picked up one. I enjoyed it, if that is possible to say about such a sad, dark book!

message 320: by Lisa S (new)

Lisa S (kasey_k_fan) Yeah she died several years ago.

message 321: by Lauren (new)

Lauren | 931 comments I just checked out: My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult

Jen (jencroup) My libraries system has been down the last 2 days and and it is driving me crazy. I always reserve my books online so I don't spend hours walking around the library trying to pick a book

Marcia Stauber (parismarcia) | 17 comments Anyone with a sony e reader should go the the Bargain Priced section at least on a weekly basis. They are offering free ebooks. I get at least 4 to 5 books a month and they are by good authors. Check it out.

Someone posted once, somewhere, that their library system has an online request system. If they don't have a book, you can request it, if they buy it you are automatically the first request. (Or second if someone else beat you to it.) Sounds great, doesn't it? I wish my library did that.

Their library must have a healthy budget then. At my library you can request books that you want them to buy, but it isn't guaranteed.

message 346: by Sans (new)

Sans *raises hand* Mine does that. They usually tell me "no", but they have ordered a couple of the books I requested.

Have you seen the movie? Maybe in this case it would be helpful to see the movie first?

message 349: by Shadow Jubilee (new)
