15.4 My magic number was 6, same as Madeleine l'Engle.
The characteristics for 6 are responsibility, community, protection, nurture, balance and sympathy.
A. I read A Wind in the DoorbyMadeleine L'Engle and
B. Private Justice by Terri Blackstock
This task requires "Include a short explanation of how the character matches the characteristics in your post. A sentence or two would be sufficient."
The main character in this book was a Louisiana firefighter who by the nature of his job provided community service, protection and responsibility for others.

I read The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling, which was written during the reign of Queen Victoria. I enjoyed this book and gave it 4 stars.

Knitting is one of my passions. I'm not the best, I love to knit scarves, hats, washcloths, and baby blankets. I've recently knit my very first pair of socks. And I also just finished knitting a Dalek from Doctor Who for a friend's baby.
For my non-fiction book, I read
A. Yarn Harlot: The Secret Life of a Knitter by Stephanie Pearl-McPhee
and for my fiction book, I read
B. Knitting Under the Influence by Claire LaZebnik (Goodreads Author)
I loved Yarn Harlot. It was full of essays about knitters and their love for knitting, yarn, and their stashes...and all of the pain and triumphs that come along with creating something out of a piece of string and two sticks. I'm only a knitter and not a Knitter (with a capital K) as the author describes a Knitter. I personally believe that I'm in between the two categories. Can there please be a Middle-case K? Now I'm sure that if you haven't knitted a thing in your life, you aren't going to get anythin...more This book was full of essays about knitters and their love for knitting, yarn, and their stashes...and all of the pain and triumphs that come along with creating something out of a piece of string and two sticks. Now I'm sure that if you haven't knitted a thing in your life, you aren't going to get anything out of this book, but if you are a knitter or a Knitter, I'm sure that you will love this book.
Knitting Under the Influence is a fun quick read. Pure chick lit. Being that the word "knitting" is in the title, you would have thought that it would have played more of a part in the book. It seemed to be the only reason that the three main characters were friends. The story centers around three best friends and their relationships outside of each other. I really liked their individual stories, but I never fully understood why these people were friends in the first place. Otherwise, pretty fun.

I finished 25.6 by reading Speak by Laurie Halsie Anderson. This book has the same theme as my favorite summer song "The Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini". This song reminds me of summer because I like going to the beach in the summer and it is always a struggle to find a perfect bathing suit and I always wanted a yellow polka dot one because of this song.
They are both about a girl standing on the edge of the society overcoming her fears and coming out of the shell.
Laurie Halsie Anderson is a goodreads author.

Nicki, I agree with your assessment of Tractors. I too thought it would be funnier. I just finished her book Strawberry Fields: A Novel and am still trying to decide what I thought about it.

This is an absolute MUST READ. I feel that any book that makes you feel emotion is a book that is always a must read. It makes you laugh, smile, cry, and even cry out "Oh my gosh!". If you like romance and love your dad I would definitely recommend this book.

10.5 Not My Daighter by Barbara Delinsky
15.52A Arizona Dreams by Jon Talton
15.2B Between, Georgia by7 Joshilyn Jackson
20.1A Ice by Linda Howard
20.1B My favorite ice cream flavor is Daquiri Ice by Baskin Robbins
20.4 Walking on Glass by Alma Fullerton This is my third challenge

I finished
5.6, Nathan Hale spy, with
Inside Out by Barry Eisler
Publishers Weekly calls Ben Treven a "black ops spy/assassin"
This is the second Treven book. This one is based on actual events- the disappearance of videos of American torture of suspected terrorists. Some good action and the promise of an appearance by John Rain and Dox (Rain series) in the future
25.4, Nicole's Happy Birthday, with
A. Cancer author- Solar by Ian McEwan birthday June 21, 1948
B. noun on pg 31: machine- The Accidental Time Machine by Joe Haldeman
I was disappointed by Solar- didn't like the structure
Re: time machine- I find myself reading more science fiction thanks to Helen's task in a past challenge. This one had some humor and an interesting premise, but was a little light- it could have used some intellectual heft
25.2, Coralie's Q & A with
Q: When Will There Be Good News? by Kate Atkinson
A: Two O'Clock, Eastern Wartime by John Dunning
In WWTBGN, Atkinson's characters skillfully intertwine in a Jackson Brodie mystery- complicated but worth it
I really like John Dunning's Bookman novels, but this stand alone was too ambitious- too many themes and way too long. The mystery gets lost, by the end I didn't care who the killer was- and I could have suggested a few more victims.
25.10, Belinda's Name Game, with
A. Nine Coaches Waiting by Mary Stewart
B. Songs for the Missing by Stewart O'Nan
Stewart ==> Stewart
I have a soft spot for Mary Stewart- she was the first author I read when I was allowed across the threshold into our library's adult section (literally- kids couldn't go in- how times have changed!)
In Songs for the Missing O'Nan examines what a family faces when their worst nightmare comes true. The multiple POVs were very effective

For this task I read How to Murder Your Mother-In-Law by Dorothy Cannell
The mother-in-law in this book was overbearing, meddling, and impossible to please. Sort of the big stereotypical protrayal of the "mother-in-law".
I have been a mother-in-law since 2001 to my son's wife and just became a mother-in-law to my daughter's husband in Oct. My philosophy is to avoid getting involved unless asked and to try to treat all my children whether it be my original ones or my added ones equally with love. I asked my daughter-in-law yesterday if I did anything that drove her nuts and she assured me I was fine and she wouldn't hesitate to tell me if I bugged her.
I have been thinking a lot about the mother-in-law relationship a lot lately as we just had to put MY mother-in-law in a nursing home.

I LIKED THESE GENRES
25.5- Share the Summer Love-
First Genre- Historicial Romance
Daughters of England by Philippa Carr
***I read the purple cover--- 308 pgs.)
I like historical romance because the love story is interwined with great historical facts.
This story was set in the time when the ruling class had just replaced puritan rule. Things were very stringent during this time and then the king changed things and there were more freedoms--- along with some abuses (as always) of moral rules and regulations. This book takes you through the life of
a mother and later her daughter. I'd give it a 3 1/2.
Second Gengre- Fantasy
Eragon by Christopher Paolini
(500+ pages)
I love fantasy books and this one was wonderful. With
fantasy, anything goes and you are at the mercy of the author's fantastic imagination. This story is about a young man named Eragon who is destined to be a Dragon Rider. He goes though many adventures and dangers discovering his abilities and his destiny. There are more books in the series and I'll have to read them. I'd rate this a 4.

This was my first (and only 500 pg. Big Book- Thanks)

The Vikings (non-fiction) and Viking Adventure (fiction)
The Vikings! I love anthropology and history as a rule, but I love to study the Vikings. I feel like they've gotten a bad rap throughout history and most of their accomplishments are ignored (two examples: William the Conqueror was a descendant of the Vikings--"Norman" = "Norseman," and women had more freedom under Viking law than any contemporary society and even most societies throughout history). And besides, I've got serious Viking blood in me--one of my great-grandmothers traced our lineage back to Leif Eriksson and Erik the Red! So maybe I'm a little biased?

30.2 For the Children
Children's Classic
The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett
The Secret Garden is one of my favorite books from my childhood. Revisiting it this summer was a joy! This story taught me a lot about how I wanted to live my life, and this was revealed to me as I reread this wonderful book. In the story, Mary learns to let go of prejudices ingrained in her when she was part of the British “ruling class” in India and truly connect with people. She helps Colin find his own inner strength and helps others make more empathetic connections as well. Although I no longer garden much myself, I love being in nature and studying and taking time to look at the animals and plants around me. I love this story and recommend it to you as a reread or a first time reading of a wonderful classic for children that speaks to adults as well. For a number of years on Fox Island there was a Secret Garden maintained for people to visit and I used to spend a lot of time there. That was my biggest memory of the book and I am glad that I revisited the story and discovered so much more meaning than I had remembered.
I bought a copy for my "adopted" son's daughter to keep for when she's old enough and I have saved my own childhood copy for my first grandchildren which will probably be awhile!
Child Main Character: Ted/12 Years Old
The London Eye Mystery by Siobhan Dowd
In the same spirit as The Curious Incident of the Dog in Nighttime by Mark Haddon and House Rules by Jodi Picoult, Siobhan Dowd brings us Ted, a young boy with Asperger’s Syndrome who helps solve The London Eye Mystery. Ted’s cousin Salim goes up for a ride on the London Eye, but he doesn’t come down. Ted has some theories about how this could have happened and he and his older sister, Kat, set out to find their cousin. This one kept me guessing right to the end. It’s a great little mystery!

Ms Anderson - have you read Njal's Saga? Very readable, fascinating and I found it quite funny in places too!

Christine US
1st book: Dance Upon the Air by Nora Roberts
2nd book: The Bone Garden by Tess Gerritsen
The 1st book is within the genre "romance". The 2nd is within the genre "mystery".
What I enjoy the most about romance novels is there ability to totally whisk me away to another place through my imagination, without having to take a heavy toll on my brain. It's just good light-hearted fun to read and enjoy, while making me smile at the end that there are people living "happily ever after" in the world (or the world within the book). Within the genre as a whole, my favorite subgenre is the paranormal romance. It adds to the fun and light-heartedness with ghosts, witches, vampires, charms, etc. I like reading about all the mysteries of the paranormal and thinking about "what if" there was magic in the real world.
Mysteries do the opposite for me -- when I want to read a book and be totally absorbed and forced to think, I will pick up a mystery. Sometimes in life, things can get so routine with work, daily commute, errands...I feel I function on auto-pilot and real heavy thought isn't required. That is when I want to be shaken out of the typical and will pick up a mystery novel. Reading a mystery really pushes my mind's limits in trying to figure out 'whodunit' and why. I feel like it keeps my mind alert, aware and healthy - which is always a good thing! I prefer if the villian isn't obvious from page 1, but sometimes I feel like authors are really dumbing down their books for the general public. If I find a book that keeps me hooked and shocked at the end -- I feel like I've found a real treasure.
