Whenever I see a book on a Banned Books list, I check to find out why it was banned. My Brother Sam is Dead is about a 16-year-old boy who fought in the American Revolution, is told by his 12-year-old brother, and focuses mainly on how the Revolution tore families and communities apart. Some of the reasons given for wanting it banned: 1) foul language (the word 'dam*' is used twice), 2) disobedient & lying children (Sam disobeyed his father by going off to fight; Tim lied to his father to protect Sam from dad's anger), 3) extreme violence (there were two descriptive passages about dead and dying soldiers), and 4)anti-patriotism (Tim's mother sounded off about how she wanted nothing to do with the war that was destroying her family). It's a well-written book and IMO deserved its Newbery Honor status.May

BJ Rose, that is a good idea - while I was reading The Lovely Bones, I kept asking myself why was this book on the banned list...the only explaination I could find was this:According to ALA, it was banned from a middle school in Waltham, MA in 2008 and moved to a “faculty section” because it was considered “too frightening for middle school students”. While some horrific things happen to Susie in this book, those scenes are handled without gruesome details. The bulk of the book celebrates life and family and why they are worth the hard parts. Also, most teens have probably read/seen/heard worse on the news!
So as I read this, a mother basically decided that the book contained inappropriate stuff for her daughter to read and instead of just saying, no you can't read this, petitioned the school library and others agreed...
5/5 Only in for 5 this month.

I think this is it for me this month. I have the next couple of Sookie Stackhouse books from the library and I'm going to start on those instead of reading the last 2 for this challenge. I know I've missed an update - sorry!! Computer time has been very limited while I've been trying to restore my house back to normal (as normal as it can be - ha!) now that the bathroom renovations are almost done. Although everything was protected with drop sheets and plastic there's a fine layer of concrete dust over everything ... but, damn, the bathrooms look great :)So, I will do the final update for May in the next 24 hours to give everyone in different time zones the chance to post their updates.
