Monthly Challenge: January 2024

Welcome to our monthly Listopia Madness challenge. It is a relatively simple challenge. Every month you will get 3 listopia lists from me and 3 from the winners of the previous month. *Please note that if you do not respond in a reasonable amount of time that the 4th place person (and so on) will replace you until we get 3 lists.

How it works
📘You will read as many books as you want from as many of the lists provided as you want.
📘You will score each book using the point system provided below
📘You will keep a running tally of your total in your post (try to keep your books in one comment, if possible for easy tracking)
📘I will contact the 3 highest-scoring readers at the end of the month and they will each choose one listopia list to be included in the next month's challenge.

Challenge rules:
📘No poetry or cookbooks allowed.
📘Standard Rules Apply

My favorite community theatre is doing Fairview by Jackie Sibblies Drury, which won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2019. It's going to be contoversial, to say the least, lol.

Are you active in theatre, Jenny? Or like to read plays?

I used to be in a theater group. We performed at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe two years running. Plus a bunch of plays locally. So, I have a soft spot for theater. I haven't been on stage in ages though. Sometimes I miss it.

I have not heard of the play you are doing, so I am off to look at it now...

Edinburgh Festival Fringe - Jenny, I am seriously impressed!

I'm only managing one show a year, these days, although I volunteer in other capacities.

Fairview is not for the faint of heart. It deals with race issues and is definitely going to make some of our patrons unhappy. The structure is also unusual - the lines of Act II are spoken over a silent repeat of the action of Act I - and then Act III gets really strange. We'll see how it goes, lol.

I'd love to hear what you think of it if you get a chance to read it!

So many choices....

Great picks, everyone!

Although, as always, I'm baffled by some of the books on the lists, lol.

Truitt_T | 1371 comments Donna -

Is Snowball ok for Bonus this time around? You've got Surfing on the list, and I was wondering if it was actuall supposed to be Snowball Fight instead....or maybe we're already reading too much for Snowball, lol?

Yeah, I deleted the wrong challenge when I copied the list over. I fixed it. It is supposed to be Snowball Fight and not Series Surfing. Thanks for catching that.

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 3759 comments Good thing you highlighted that! Because I had figured we weren't using it when I entered my first book, and then brain fog set in and my brain reverted to December for the next 2. Wouldn't have been an issue as I used them in other challenges too, but don't want to be confusing anyone (or myself for that matter, lol)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 3759 comments Sometimes people's inability to add the right books to lists works out in one's favour...

H is for Hawk doesn't belong on the 1001 list, but it's there anyway, so yay! more points, lol!

At least it's not as ridiculous an addition to the list as some I've come across, lol.

message 31: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2149 comments You might want to double check. I thought I saw H is for Hawk on the special penis list too.

teehee

Three books I have read so far weren't on any of the lists. Sigh.

message 32: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 3759 comments I think that might be a different book 😂

I was surprised to see Stranger in a Strange Land on there though!

I've had a couple of listless book so far too, but they were "on the TBR/shelf" for ever books, so I'm glad to have read them now anyway, lol.

I wondered at Stranger in a Strange Land being on the list, too. Valentine Michael Smith isn't actually an alien and I don't recall there being any particular mention of his gentalia....

Jenny - I've read four so far that haven't been on any of the list. I don't think there's been a month in which every book I read counted. Doubt it'll ever happen, lol.

I just posted a list of possible books for Buddy Reads over on the Find a Buddy Read Partner thread. Would anyone care to join me?

message 36: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2149 comments About half of the books I have read so far this month are not on any of these lists!!! How annoying. Oh well, I am reading some fun books anyway.

Same for me, Jenny!

message 38: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 3759 comments Fun books is what it's all about!

I had a half dozen or so at the start of the month that didn't fit, but as I'm actively reading through a pile of 1001-list audible freebies before they disappear, most of my books are gonna count, lol.

Same, Jenny! Also, January tends to be a low reading month for me... I don't honestly know why, just busy I guess. I started off strong, but now... eeek! I even make a personal goal to read 20 books this month, and I'm not sure I'll make it lol. I usually read more than that without trying...

message 40: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 3759 comments December is like that for me. I rarely read anything during the last couple of weeks.

At the moment I'm housesitting with very little else to do, which helps with getting through the tbr a bit, lol.

message 42: by Truitt_T (last edited Jan 28, 2024 08:29AM) (new)

Truitt_T | 1371 comments I have a question about Graphic Novels, Donna.

If I'm reading the Standard Book Requirements correctly, to count a GN toward a competitive challenge, it needs to be found on one of the ARBookfind sites and be a minimum of 30,000 words OR be 400 pages long to convert .25 x 400 = 100 pages, right?

Example: Mimosa (which is on the Best of 2023) is not on any of the ARBookfind sites. It has 272 pages, so it does not meet the minimum 100 page conversion (.25 x 272 = 68.)

So, I cannot use it for Listopia, Disney, or Snowball because points are being tracked, but I can use it for Fairytale or Author Spotlight (no point counting) because it meets the 100 page (unconverted) minimum.

Did I get that right, lol?

Thanks - and I hope you're feeling better!

You almost got it right. I have special graphic novel rules for Listopia Madness. If you look in message 1, you will find them. Mimosa does qualify because you will use the actual page count to qualify the book and the adjusted page count to figure out your book score.

Whoops - sorry about that, Donna. I'm glad I can use it, though!

message 45: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2149 comments Well, I have a few books to add before the end of the month, but I have been unlucky on the lists this time out.

I have been trying to get rid of books from my TBR before Uno and whatever other task specific challenges are on the horizon, and a lot of them are just not on any lists.

So, winners, pick some good listopias please for February!!!!
I will give you a run for your money another month. teehee

Seriously - this is the best month I've had and probably the best month for Listopia I will every have. And I still think Sammy will best me, lol.

message 47: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 3759 comments Don't think I will Tru! I'm struggling to find books on the lists now, lol. I've finally gotten through all the audible+ freebies I needed to this month, most of which were 1001-list books. Now I'm just mostly reading shorties waiting for UNO to start.

But I'm quite content coming second 😁

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 3759 comments Jenny wrote: "I have been trying to get rid of books from my TBR before Uno and whatever other task specific challenges are on the horizon, and a lot of them are just not on any lists."

Which is precisely what I was doing. But I planned ahead and chose my list accordingly. Hence the obscene amount of pink on my list of books read this month 😂

message 49: by Truitt_T (new)

Truitt_T | 1371 comments So what types of books do you read for UNO? I have a list in mind, but I’m not sure it’ll be popular…..

message 50: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 3759 comments Coloured covers (red, blue, green and yellow) are useful, as are books with the numbers 1-9 in the title, books that are 1-9 in series and books that have the letters Z, O, T, H, F, I, S, V, E, N, K & P (title, author, character name, setting)

Also books that a team member has previously read.

And it all depends on what cards your team draws each month.

So basically, impossible to plan lists for 😂
