Truitt_T | 1371 comments We can go ahead and start today, if you like - I finished a few things earlier than expected. :)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 3761 comments I'm just finishing up another book, but can start later today :)

message 5: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 3761 comments I'm about halfway through. Not finding it quite as engaging as the first, and I'm struggling a little to see Luke as grown-up suddenly (it's only been a few days! πŸ˜‚), which is a touch uncomfortable, lol.

message 6: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 3761 comments This one also seems a lot smuttier than the first one. 😁

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 3761 comments Definitely picked up as it went, and I enjoyed the second half much more. Still think I enjoyed the first book more though.

Truitt_T | 1371 comments I've just finished Chapter 10.

I, for one, am delighted that it's Luke! I hoped we get a chance to see more of him, and that he'd get a happy ending, which I assume is forthcoming.

message 9: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 3761 comments I got used to it eventually, it just threw me a little that a couple of days ago he was still a kid, lol.

Yes, you're right, there isn't much of a sense of place in this one. A shame, because I think that's what made the first stand out in comparison.

message 10: by Truitt_T (new)

Truitt_T | 1371 comments I'm finished. :)

Let me know if there's ever anything else you want to Buddy Read!

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 3761 comments And if she hadn't thought of it before, you'll put the idea in her head so will become a thing eventually πŸ˜†

Will do. I think we're both pretty fond of sci-fi? I'm slowly making my way through the SF Masterworks collection, though with UNO starting next week, all bets are off, lol.

I'd love to read some science fiction with you. I've been thinking of some sort of challenge working through the Hugo and Nebula nominees and winners I haven't already read. My tolerance for older SF is limited - rereading the original Foundation Trilogy recently was maddening - sexist old coot!

I have two new team challenges beginning next week as well, although they don't sound as all demanding as UNO, which I want to play one of these days. I need to join the Group so I know when it's ramping up next time. :)

message 15: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 3761 comments UNO is actually quite a relaxed one, compared to most other challenges. Page count doesn't matter in this one, which is a nice change from the "the team that reads the most massive books wins" kind of challenges 😁

I read so many older books that the whole sexism thing doesn't bother me so much. Times and attitudes change, and I try not to hold it against people that they lived in a different time.
Besides, if I did, I'd never be able to read Heinlein again, and though he was a misogynistic old letcher, he wrote some fantastic books! πŸ˜†

It annoys me more when it goes the other way and women write books that try to elevate women by putting down men. I want to scream at them "No! Not that way! You're just doing what they did now. Can't we rise above it and show people there's a better way?" lol. I keep wanting to think we're enlightened enough these days to know that no-one is any better than anyone else, but I guess that's wishful thinking πŸ˜‚

Oh yeah - I know what you mean about getting tired of big page count targets. For a while there I was constantly searching out omnibus editions to get numbers right. I don't mind for a while, but I started craving short books!

I read quite a few older books, too, and usually I am fairly philisophical about sexism, racism, etc. - I consider it a warning for future generations, including ours. For whatever reason, though I found Asimov to be maddening this time. Truh be told, I am not an enormous Asimov fan - Heinlein, though! Well, let's just I've read all of his fiction (except the fairly recently published odd version of The Number of the Beast, The Pursuit of the Pankera: A Parallel Novel About Parallel Universes - I own it, but I've been putting it off.) The first two SF novels I remember reading (I was in elementary school) were A Princess of Mars and The Rolling Stones.

I agree with you about writers who think they are rectifying old wrongs by enacting new ones. All we can do is avoid them....

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 3761 comments I actually like reading really long books, but there are only so many of them, and I keep running out πŸ˜†

Yes, I agree. It's better to have the warnings than to go the revisionist route and pretend stuff didn't happen. That way future repetitions lie!

One of my favourite Heinlein books is I Will Fear No Evil, which is probably also his worst, misogynistically speaking πŸ˜‚

I'll pretty much reread any Heinlein, any time.

Well, actually, I'd prefer not to read Farnham's Freehold ever again.

Otherwise, let me know, and I'm in.
It's so nice to have someone to talk Heinlein with!

ETA: And I am very fond of I Will Fear No Evil.

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 3761 comments There is a chance I may be reading Starship Troopers in a month or two, as my copy has a beautiful read cover which may or may not end up being useful for UNO 😁

Honestly, these challenges are doing all kinds of strange things to my reading! I was looking through the audible sale, and only noticing the books with nice green, yellow, red and blue covers πŸ˜‚
