1972 BBC mini-series (6 episodes)

I watched 1972 BBC TV adaptation of Emma last week. Starring Doran Godwin as Emma and John Carson as Mr. Knightley. It is one of those low-budget shot exclusively in-doors adaptations. So nothing exciting as far as staging, locations & costumes go but the story remained close to the book and most of the actors did a solid job. Mr Woodhouse and Miss Smith were particularly good in their roles, both funny and moving. Emma and Mr Knightley were merely o.k., not much chemistry between the two. They chose extremely unflattering hairdo for Emma. The actress was 22 years old so perfect age for playing Emma but the hairstyle made her look 30. Mr Knightley might have been younger (the actor was in his mid-40s). The actress that played Jane Fairfax drove me crazy, she looked lovely but as soon as she opened her mouth I wanted to smack her. She slurred her words terribly. She stood out like a sore thumb among the cast that had perfect upper-class diction.

Zuzana | 2568 comments Look at Emma's hairstyle. Doesn't suit her at all. Miss Fairfax on the other hand looks lovely.

Tea, I haven't re-read any Jane Austen's book. That's way worse IMO. ;)

I plan Persuasion and Mansfield Park for next year. MP is my least favorite JA book and I want to check if it is still true. :p

message 123: by ❀Tea❀ (last edited Dec 17, 2017 07:35AM) (new)

❀Tea❀ (ttea) | 9624 comments For me, MF and Emma are fighting for that place. And I think it's because I watched Emma before reading (Gwyneth Paltrow version) and that ruined it. Those two are only books I never reread. Every year I plan to do it, but just can't make myself.
Maybe this will be the year...

I don't even remember what's happening in MF! lol

message 124: by Zuzana (last edited Dec 17, 2017 08:33AM) (new)

Zuzana | 2568 comments MF is just so boring to me. The story is nah & the heroine is extremely passive. At least that is how I remember it. :D

BTW Emma is my favorite. Love the book to bits. Emma is so deliciously flawed and irritating and naive. I love her.

Just out of curiosity what did you dislike about the movie?

message 125: by ❀Tea❀ (new)

❀Tea❀ (ttea) | 9624 comments Zuzana wrote: "Just out of curiosity what did you dislike about the movie?"

Gwyneth Paltrow :P
Later I watched that other version with Kate Beckinsale and actually liked that one, but somehow every time I think about picking Emma Gwyneth pops into my mind and mood is gone. :(

I need to give her another chance. :)

message 126: by Zuzana (last edited Dec 17, 2017 09:26AM) (new)

Zuzana | 2568 comments LOL! She's not my favourite Emma, a little bit too whiney for that but I always thought that she was fine. Huge plus of this adaptation is Jeremy Northam as Mr. Knightley: quite dreamy (he might be too handsome for the role but I'm not going to complain about that). ANd he and GP have a nice chemistry. I always thought that the biggest flaws of this adaptation were Frank Churchill and Harriet Smith. Ewan McGregor is totally miscast and that silly wig didn't help either. Toni Colette is just plain terrible as Harriet Smith, she plays her as boorish and stupid and forgets that in the novel Harriet has a sweetness of character that makes people like her.

BTW My favorite Emma is Romola Garai from the BBC mini-series.

message 127: by ❀Tea❀ (new)

❀Tea❀ (ttea) | 9624 comments I don't think I watched McGregor. Can't remember. But it's MF, so no wonder *grins*

For me miscast was Emma Thompson and Hugh Grant. I always felt they were there because they were names, not because they fit those characters. Or they just didn't work for me, not together.

I don't think I watched that Emma. I know which you are talking about, but I'm not sue if I just saw a clip or whole thing.

I guess I need to get back to rewatching other versions beside my favorite ones :P

message 128: by Zuzana (last edited Dec 17, 2017 10:38AM) (new)

Zuzana | 2568 comments If you haven't you need to watch it. Great casting, costumes, locations. And no Gwyneth Paltrow in sight.

Zuzana | 2568 comments I agree about Hugh Grant, he was a big name back then, he practicaly monopolized british romcoms in the 90s.

As for Emma Thompson, it will sound rude but I think she was too old to play Elinor. She's supposed to be 19 (!) years old. I love Emma Thompson but she looked like Marianne's aunt rather than her sister.
I know why she was cast. The movie was her personal project. She wrote the screenplay and she did a great job adapting the novel. She won the Oscar for the best adapted screenplay for S&S. She always wanted the role of Elinor for herself. And there was nobody to say no to her. As I said it was her project.

I think her acting was fine she just didn't look the part. And she& Hugh Grant had no chemistry.

BTW I have an update for the adaptation list:

based on Pride and Prejudice:
Omangwa Pyungyeon ("Lawless World") (2014-2015 Korean TV series)

based on Sense and Sensibility:
Material Girls (2006 Movie - Hilary and Haylie Duff)
Kumkum Bhagya ("Twist of Fate") (2014-... Indian soap opera)

The Indian soap has about 1000 episodes and is still going strong. LOL!

Zuzana | 2568 comments LOL! You tell me. I watched this clip from episode 992:

It's just so deliciously dramatic. :D Looks like Marianne is injured and in the hospital. But I might be wrong.

Zuzana | 2568 comments I've just found out there are some really good radio plays adaptations of JA books. They're longer than movies. Can we add plays and radio plays to the Adaptation category, please?

Here are some interesting ones I came across at Audible:
Northanger Abbey starring Emma Thompson (6+ hours):
https://www.audible.com/pd/Classics/N...
Mansfield Park starring Benedict Cumberbatch, David Tennant& Felicity Jones (2+ hours):
https://www.audible.com/pd/Classics/M...

❀Tea❀ (ttea) | 9624 comments Just to make sure, you want to add that to last 'task' with movies and TV shows? How many points?

Should I add them also under helpful things?

message 138: by Zuzana (last edited Dec 24, 2017 03:57AM) (new)

Zuzana | 2568 comments Yes, please. That would be great.
They are adaptations, too, so I would put them into the Adaptations category. I would award 1 point for a radio play/audio dramatisation (the same as the movie).

I'm really looking forward to the MP radio play. I like both Cumberbatch and Tennant. Yay for Sherlock and the 10th Doctor! Wonder who's gonna be the bad guy. XD

As for the list, I'll try and find more of the radio plays and then post them here. It won't be before the new year, I'm kinda busy with Christmas preparations.

Merry Christmas!

❀Tea❀ (ttea) | 9624 comments I just remembered something!
Couldn't those radio plays count as fancy version of audiobook? So in theory if you listen to that you could count it twice - under Original & under Adaptation?

But they sound great :)
I'm listening to sample right now

message 143: by Zuzana (last edited Dec 24, 2017 08:29AM) (new)

Zuzana | 2568 comments LOL! No cheating! ;)

No way are the radio plays equal to original novels. They're heavily abridged. I read about some of those and while charming and great fun they had to cut out lot of things to make them 2+ hours long (it's similar to movies).

BTW there are some full-cast unabridged audiobooks. Those are not cut at all. There is a narrator + full cast of characters. Those should go under the original category.

Have to run back to the kitchen. I have a christmas carp in the oven. XD
