Up on the hill above Cherringham sits Mabb's Farm. It's a place with a dark history going back to the 17th century - a time when locals lived in fear of the devil and witches were burnt at the stake. Legend has it that the farm - and all who live there - are cursed with misfortune. But is it really just a curse when this year's crops fail, the livestock sicken and deadly fires break out? Or is there a hidden reason behind the dangerous events? Neither Jack nor Sarah believe in the supernatural - and soon they uncover very human suspects.
"Cherringham - A Cosy Crime Series" is a series of twelve self-contained episodes. A new case for Jack and Sarah is released each month.
A little bit of an odd story, this was a mystery with a dash of supernatural suspicion but no actual supernatural elements. No murder, but that’s okay, it feels a little more realistic because if there were a murder in every single novella then Cherringham would run out of residents! (Well, actually, just kidding — there was a murder but it wasn’t the main part of the story or the main mystery being solved.)
AUDIOBOOK. Is it an old curse come to light, or is someone sabotaging the new farm owners. Plus where did the new owner's brother go to that he has never been heard from again.
Life in an English village is interesting with its legends and superstitions that most of the villagers take seriously. Jack & Sara solve a seemingly supernatural mystery.

The Curse of Mabb’s Farm is the sixth novelette in Neil Richards and Matthew Costello’s Cherringham series. Set in fictional Cherringham, England, in the Cotswolds, it features Sarah Edwards, English single-mother and web designer, and Jack Brennan, American ex-NYPD detective, as they solve murders and other assorted crimes that pop-up in the small town.
Charlie Fox thinks his farm is cursed. In the 17th century, it was the home of witches who were burnt at the stake. Now his tractor has caught fire, his crops are failing, and his livestock has wandered away. Charlie’s wife, Caitlin, thinks it’s the work of the devil and neither wants the police called in. The vicar’s wife, asks Sarah to investigate.
I stumbled across the Cherringham Cosy Crime series on sale on Audible, and since I enjoy British mysteries, I purchased the first six novelettes, which were originally released in 2014. The mysteries are well-written and well-plotted. Being a novelette, the story does not have room for a lot of character development, but the authors manage to let us get to know Sarah and Jack as a little of their lives are touched on in each episode. Neil Dudgeon, of Midsomer Murders, does a decent job with the narration.
I didn’t enjoy this particular story as much as others in the series, but it was still enjoyable.
I will likely seek out additional installments of this series as they are fun to listen to and are only about 2.5 hours long.
4/5 Sterne.
Taking another weekend break I picked up The Curse of Mabb’s Farm and fell right into Cherringham where Jack and Sarah explore the legend of a farm with a dark past dating back to the 17th century.
It appears that all who have lived on the farm have been cursed. Currently, the inhabitants are dealing with crop failures, sick livestock, and fire, which is a bit hard to blame on the devil and witches which was the usual go-to in the past. Street tough Jack and inquisitive Sarah can’t let good folklore go unexplored and set out on a dark and stormy night, in the company of a local coven (of sorts) to see what is happening to the current residents and which mystical entities they can summon. Turns out, what is happening at Mabb’s is a little more modern-day than they had expected.
I highly recommend this series for both its doggedness and the usual twists.
As with previous Cherringham mysteries, I enjoyed this one, #6, The Curse of Mabb’s Farm. All of the entries in this series are short, quick reads, without much gory detail, supernatural elements, or horror — i.e., cozy mysteries. I especially like the writing, the characters of Sarah and Jake, humor (often tongue-in-cheek), and the excellent narration. These stories reward a familiarity with Shakespeare and other literature, but do not require it. This installment concerns what is really going on behind an alleged curse on Mabb’s Farm, a legend that has persisted for centuries. Sarah and Jack don’t believe in curses and intend to find out what’s causing the problems with crops and livestock and the fires at the farm.
This episode is about perception and beliefs. While different from the other episodes I've read, it is still a very good sleuthing. I think that it is very well done, and I liked it. The ongoing sleuthing involves a retired and widowed older NYPD homicide cop who is finding life in the English countryside a fair antidote to his mourning, and a local recently divorced woman who has returned to her hometown with her children. They make a good sleuthing pair. Voice actor Neil Dudgeon has been an asset to my listening pleasure while I do mindless things.
Paikallisella maanviljelijällä on ongelma. Useitakin.
If you believe in curses, Charlie Fox is certainly cursed. He's running the family farm but not doing very well at it. Fences suddenly break down, fires spring up with no reason, animals are hurt...has an old witches curse come back with a vengeance? Sarah and Jack don't think so and begin their investigation into the Mabb's Farm mystery even though Charlie and his wife say they don't need their help.
Once again Sarah and Jack are putting their minds together to solve another mystery of the Cursed Farm. Was the farm really cursed, was the young farmer and his wife really just unlucky or really under a curse, could Tamara and her friends end the curse? If you like mysteries then you will love this one. Oh yes there is a brother missing where is he?
Please do not stop writing these. It's like Murder She Wrote had an affair with a British mystery show (pick one), got pregnant and gave birth to Jack and Sarah.
Ps - I think I could be Jack minus the bubbling love tension between he and Sarah.
Wow, that twist at the end was unpredictable, I didn't seen it coming. Jack figured out what was happening at Mabb's Farm and played an interesting game, which was fruitful with many results. Great audio experience!
3½ ster
I wish I had read this one rather than listened to the audio version. If I could have easily flipped back to read exactly what the vicar's wife said, I might be amazed at the clever misdirection of the author rather than feeling that the solution came out of nowhere.
Jack and Sarah really should be getting paid for their efforts by now! It seems like whenever there's a problem in Cherringham, they're being asked for help. I really love their friendship and their sense of humor and taste for adventure.
