I’m like Joseph in that I generally don’t read all the tie-ins to a crossover. Back in the olden days when the MU all felt connected, it would seem like the event spilled over and was organic, instead of forced on titles nowadays.

Erik, I recently finished reading mine and loved it. I read a little each day to just relax and absorb it. Now I’m curious what printing I have...

message 7152: by noelbeast (new)

noelbeast | 489 comments I’ve not read the Inferno Crossovers omnibus, sitting on my shelf for an eventual reread of the event. But from what I remember it’s mostly recommended for enjoyment of demon beat downs by other heroes only, and by no means necessary reading.

Erik: congrats on the first edition! I think my set is the 14th(!) printing or so.

Such a great collection. I got mine for Amazon as well, tried a “trick” I read somewhere about selecting and paying for gift packaging to help keep shipments from them in better shape. In the end: not recommended. They put my set in a cheap “cloth” gift bag of some type and tossed it into the Amazon box with no additional packing materials. Despite any minimal protection this provided, the books still came in fine shape. Worth a shot I guess.

I have those two, plus the prologue OHC. Is the "Omnibus" spine really worth it? I should've sold these right when they first announced the omnis, but unfortunately preorders are up on Ebay and driving down the cost of the OHCs. I might just stick with what I have.

JohnIV | 76 comments Hrm, thought I was being clever purchasing from Tales of Wonder, however it appears it's the same parent/company as DCBS and IST I just got shipping info from Cameron Merkle and my ToW purchases now show in the IST purchase history.

The prices and shipping origination location seem the same, am I correct with others experiences that the only pros of ordering w/ ToW is the ability to pre-order and not get charged until they're on the way?

message 7155: by Ryan (new)

Ryan | 146 comments Yes, I’ve ordered a bunch of books with ToW and IST, and they are the same company. I basically preorder on ToW if I miss the cutoff on DCBS, which is also part of the same company. ToW charges shipping, where IST is free shipping on any order over $50, although I generally upgrade to the UPS shipping for $4.

If I didn’t preorder a book at all, I tend to buy on IST for the savings on shipping, although my last two orders have taken over a month to get to me from the time I order until actual delivery. Cheapgraphicnovels is also a solid option for books already released, and they release their books Monday night instead of Tuesday afternoon like IST.

Thanks, I noticed that their (ToW) free shipping kicks in at $99, so a couple omnis would do it if you're grouping (from the same release day).

message 7159: by J (new)

J | 531 comments IST just sent out notice that the following were delayed, in case anyone wondered why they aren't out this week:

WORLD OF BLACK HAMMER LIBRARY EDITION HC VOL 2 is being delayed one more week, to 3/31 (available 3/30 from IST)

DAWN OF X TP VOL 15 has been delayed to late next month on 4/21 (available 4/20 from IST)

ACTS OF VENGEANCE SPIDER-MAN & WOLVERINE TP will now be available on 4/28 (available 4/27 from IST)

message 7160: by Nickviola (new)

Nickviola | 1019 comments Also got the DM of Inferno - super excited about that addition!!

So just to clarify, World of Black Hammer LE 2, X of Swords, BPRD Devil You Know, Ragnarok 3 are all delayed?

Also - I dont know if I mentioned this, but again AWESOME CUSTOMER SERVICE from IST. My DM Uncanny X-Men 3 uncharacteristically came back with a HUGE dent (must have been there pre packing) so I took a picture and sent it and they apparently keep a handful of book copies set aside, including the DM, in case any arrive damaged. So they sent me return label, i sent it back, and they are sending out a new copy no charge to me.

They didn't mention X of Swords but I noticed Amazon doesn't have it on sale until late April. (Unless I've missed an announcement somewhere?)

Today I went ahead and got the X-Men Inferno DM, Swamp Thing New 52, and although I said I wasn't going to double dip, got the Batgirl, Nightwing, and Red Hood New 52 omnis because I got a good deal for my TPBs. Additionally, picked up some TPBs of stuff I was missing, mainly filling out the Wonder Woman post rebirth run and a West Coast Avengers Epic collection I was looking to get.

Ragnarok 3 available here: https://www.instocktrades.com/product...

World of Black Hammer 2 is delayed till next week. Not sure on BRPD (I haven't seen it for sale but I want a copy too). X- of Swords is sold out on IST but still not released from book stores (not out till 20 April on Amazon). Not sure if more copies will become available on IST.

Caleb | 14 comments I posted this in the Dark Horse thread but figured it wouldn't hurt to also post it here: I just received an email from IST saying that due to an error they are unable to fill Usagi Yojimbo Saga Ltd Ed HC (2nd Ed) Vol 01 in my order. Total bummer. Does anyone know where I might be able to find a copy? Thanks.

I was actually wondering if it came out this week because I didn’t see it. I guess it sold out? Now I need to find one too.

JohnIV | 76 comments Has anyone thrown up their hands on IST/TOW/DCBS etc. shipping via USPS and how much quicker has the UPS 'upgrade' been for you? I'm trying it the first time at IST for the new Swamp Thing Omni.

Seems my prior IST orders have been sitting on pallets waiting for USPS to even pick them up, ugh.

John: for what it’s worth, only a single example, but I finally switched back to USPS shipping for my order last Tuesday of 2 newly released books. They shipped out Saturday, scheduled for delivery this Monday.

Meanwhile an order I placed March 2nd with the UPS upgrade is still waiting to process. I finally reached out to IST last night to ask them what was going on with the order, which is a combo of a new release and older TPB’s. The response I got: even though the IST website says all the TPB’s I ordered are still available for sale, they’re not actually in stock and IST is waiting on their distributor to send them before they can ship.

If you’re sure your orders via USPS are all ready to go, could very well be hit or miss on the order they ship things, which is discouraging. Otherwise you might’ve encountered what I did with “phantom stock”.

Edit: hmmm. Just checked and now all items in my March 2nd order have been picked and scanned. That was either a mighty convenient coincidence, or my order might’ve been overlooked somehow until I said something?

message 7174: by J (new)

J | 531 comments Noel, my orders usually contain new and older books and I have wondered of they didn't actually have them in stock and that was causing the delivery delays. Thanks for letting us know!

Hey, happy to let my anguish benefit the group in some way! 😂

In truth, almost always I couldn’t care less about delays so long as the books arrive in good condition. But this particular order contains my X of Swords Brooks variant, and those damn eBay gougers certainly made short work of that one...

message 7176: by JohnIV (new)

JohnIV | 76 comments Thanks for the data point Noel, most of my delays with IST are at the stage where they've picked/scanned and created a label but then they sit until USPS picks them / accepts them. My Conan 5 is still in that state from a 3/2 order.

I’ve found my orders with IST that contain older books do take longer to ship . . . My guess new books are up front getting pulled and shipped and when someone gets the time to stroll to storage they do.

I’ve had to push several times and find I get a shipment notification within days of a push; squeaky wheel. I always give them a minimum of 3 weeks before I inquire.

Great point Erik. I wondered before I made contact if they had 2 different teams working, one on new books one on old, and perhaps communication between the two isn’t the best, but can definitely see pushing the new books the priority.

Details of my case now: contacted Tuesday night, told Wednesday morning certain books not actually in stock, later Wednesday all picked and processed, and now today the order is shipped—I think it’s a definite case of squeaky wheel.

So are the Usagi Yojimbo Saga collections an "omnibus"? It still collects the stories in order? Are they still oversized but thicker and not signed?

Technically they would be omnibus volumes because they collect 2 to 3 thinner books. They are not oversized but they are thicker than most standard books. If I can get to it I'll take some pictures tonight and upload them on MeWe. =)

They are smaller in height and width compared to the Berserk/Hellsing/Blade of the Immortal DLX volumes but nearly the same thickness.

I might go after that Robotech Visual Archive book. Saved the first on my wishlist but never got around to it, though it’s still readily available from other sources. Anyone else a fan of the show, from back in the 80’s? Loved it growing up, and I’ve collected and read all the novels as well.

My long story is:
I watched the show sporadically growing up, but didn't get to see many episodes.

In the 90's, I bought the first DVD box set, never watched them.

A few years ago I started watching them on Amazon Prime, made it about halfway through before certain story elements just turned me off completely.

I love the vehicles and tactical strategies but some of the character stories were incredibly boring to me. Maybe I'll try and finish it once I get through all the Star Wars stuff. I think seeing some of those vehicles in a live-action movie would be incredible.

It was Minmay that killed it for you, wasn’t it? Haha

I haven’t done a rewatch in years, but damn she’s polarizing. I just remember being so intrigued by it back in the day, beyond the sci-fi and giant transformable mechs, because it was the first cartoon I remember where characters died. And not just those in the background; main characters, which you could seen the permanence of their passing for the other characters/storyline.

Any thoughts?

When it comes to Omnis do y’all think first printings hold any value over new printings?

message 7191: by Ryan (new)

Ryan | 146 comments I actually find myself preferring the newer printings on Marvel Omnis since most of them are thinner. That means thinner paper, but I think the quality is still high and I’ll take the trade off to save on shelf space.

As far as the aftermarket, I don’t notice a big price difference with first printings vs others.

noelbeast | 489 comments Erik wrote: "Any thoughts?

I was just thinking about this earlier today, based on a first printing of an omni someone posted about on Reddit, so great timing Erik.

I don’t think first printings really hold much more value, beyond things like printing errors that can pop up in the reissues. I do see first printings advertised as such on eBay from time to time, but don’t know how well they sell. Personally I don’t place any more value in them, especially since not a lot of time has passed between most initial printings and reissues.

Ryan wrote: "I actually find myself preferring the newer printings on Marvel Omnis since most of them are thinner. That means thinner paper, but I think the quality is still high and I’ll take the trade off to ..."

I’m sure the paper was thicker in the earliest years of Marvel omnis, but from my studies & measurements (due to my curiosity), I’d argue we’ve had fairly consistent paper thickness for some time now: 0.08-0.10 mm. A small sample of measurements from my collection:

A MMW (2008): 0.10 mm
My oldest omni (2009): 0.09 mm
2012 omni: 0.10 mm
2015 omni: 0.08 mm
2018 omni: 0.09 mm
2019 omni: 0.08 mm
2020 omni: 0.08 mm
2021 omni: 0.08 mm

Every once in a while I run into some online rant about how Marvel keeps cheapening their omnis with thinner and thinner paper, and while yes my data does put page thickness at the lowest end of that range for 3 years now, a 0.01 mm difference is nothing that keeps me up at night.

Also it seems that the new printing of Spider-Man by Roger Stern Omnibus will have thicker paper again, and even thicker than the original printing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xXVd_...

message 7195: by Blindzider, Moderator (new)

Blindzider | 3293 comments Mod
I was going to mention that I don’t think all new omnis have thin paper but they are thinner than the original omnibus. Best example is look at how thick Amazing Spider-Man Vol 1 is compared to the newer ones reprints.

There are also some new omnibus that have extremely thin paper. So thin that you can see the art on the other side. To me that is unacceptable. I believe the Wolverine omnibus has this problem and I think the Silver Surfer reprint also. It may be the same printer that does the flat spines.

As far as first printings being worth more, I haven’t seen anything indicating this. And for omnibus it doesn’t matter to me personally.

I tend to agree that first prints do not garner a higher price tag. In my opinion, they aren’t really first prints anyway, as they are reprints of the original comic issues.

Erik wrote: "I tend to agree that first prints do not garner a higher price tag. In my opinion, they aren’t really first prints anyway, as they are reprints of the original comic issues."

Agree with this for sure. I would tend to lean towards the thicker paper to avoid the issue Blindzider mentioned with being able to see through the paper to some degree and having the other side of the page potentially make seeing the page you are viewing less cleanly viewable.

Mike, welcome to the board! I wanted to pick up Usagi Yojimbo vol 9 off IST on Tuesday but I was engaged with something at work that didn't allow me to check onto the web site until an hour after releases and I didn't see it available. I'm not sure if it actually was put up for sale but I do know the TPB version of that volume was based on comments I've seen elsewhere. In the past these haven't sold out right away from IST on release but it's possible the pandemic and the increased interest in buying things like this has changed that? I pre-ordered a copy off of Amazon. If it actually drops next week on IST I'll grab it there and cancel the (more expensive) Amazon order.

Welcome Mike! Don't collect Yojimbo so I had no response, but glad Rel gave you some info on your question. Glad to have you in the group!

Johnny: that's good and interesting news about the ASM Stern reprint, thanks as always!

Blind: good point bringing up the Silver Surfer vol. 1 reprint. That's referring to the corrected version after the printing error was discovered, right? My original reprint copy has 0.08 mm pages and they feel "normal" to me, but I remember hearing some complaints that the corrected version had noticeably thinner pages.

One of the books I pulled for my measurements was the JMS ASM vol. 2 omni, specifically because it was part of that small group of flat-spined books produced in late 2019/early 2020. It also has a page thickness of 0.08 mm, and doesn't feel/seem any different to me than other recent books. However, you bringing up Wolverine vol. 1 compelled me to open up my non-flat spine copy I got this past fall, and sure enough: 0.07 mm and can see artwork through certain pages (dammit).

The indicia on my JMS ASM vol. 2 states it was printed in Malaysia, Silver Surfer original reprint done in China, and my Wolverine vol. 1 (fall) came from Turkey. I suspect the SS corrected reprint also hails from that printer in Turkey, and hopefully we don't see any more books from there.
