Jeff | 209 comments With DCBS, you order 2-4 months out, and are charged halfway through the month after you place your order. The default shipping is once a month, shipping in the third week of the month (usually). All books from that month that have come out will ship. You can select more often, and they will group accordingly.

I love DCBS because it guarantees you get the books you want, in the variants you want, for 50% off cover. Can't beat that. Orders do lock at the end of the month, and new preorders drop usually on the 5th of the month. Deals aren't great for non Marvel/DC though.

J | 531 comments Thanks, Jeff, for explaining better than I did! lol.

Nickviola | 1019 comments Ha, I think I might do that to lock down DM covers but save IST for the rest.

Jeff is correct. DCBS will charge your entire preorder within a couple weeks of the preorder window closing. I personally prefer this; pay up front and don’t get surprised if a bunch of books ship.

Ryan | 146 comments Just ordered the Planetary Omnibus from Target. On sale for $38, free shipping. I’ve never read it but that’s an excellent price, and I think there’s a chance it goes out of print with the Absolute being released recently.

Has anyone experienced Target's shipping on books before?

message 7058: by Ryan (new)

Ryan | 146 comments That’s my first time ordering books through Target but they actually have a decent selection online and run sales occasionally. Worth a shot.

message 7059: by Josh (last edited Mar 04, 2021 12:43PM) (new)

Josh Angel | 48 comments I’ve ordered from Target before. Only once. They’re packing was non-existent. The book was just loose inside a cardboard box. Damaged of course.

Your experience may be different though, it was a number of years ago. They may be better now.

Richard Rennie | 186 comments Planetary is probably in my top 10 favs ... I even bought the absolute to upgrade from my omnibus. I LOVE that story and how it weaves its way through comic book history. The use of color in the margins. It’s just superb!

Ugh.... Third straight month over $500 in books I want. Over the course of the year, it'll save me money. That's how I argue it. But c'mon man! Stop the insanity! (don't really stop the insanity, please)

message 7064: by J (new)

J | 531 comments Exactly. I may go back and add everything and just hope for a month when there isn't as much offered and save the money that way.

I'm fortunate to have a lot of first editions in my collection, so I can avoid a lot of reprints. But, I am picking up the inferno prologue omni, and just selling my inferno prologue OHC soon, to take advantage of high ebay prices. That should help offset the cost.

message 7068: by J (new)

J | 531 comments I've been a DC guy for so long and didn't buy much Marvel, but these days it seems that 75% of my purchases are Marvel books, which means I'm playing catch up with the reprints.

I had some of the MMW which were printed in paperback and I'm struggling whether to upgrade or not. Even with the upcoming FF Omni #3, I have the MMW FF TPBs up to 10, which ends with FF #104. I had/have the same problem with DC's Archives and whether I should get the various Golden and Silver Age omnis. I'm not very OCD about my collection, so I've been getting, say, the Flash and Green Lantern Silver Age omnis which pick up after their last archives left off. But I kinda really want the upgraded Marvel omnis. Decisions, decisions.

That Inferno prologue omni is one that I took out of my cart. Not familiar with that story line. I did grab the ASM #3 reprint and #5, the new Conan and Kull omnis, and the JLA Bronze Age #3 omni. Then some assorted TPBs. I also always grab whatever Archie digests are out for that month.

message 7069: by Jeff (new)

Jeff | 209 comments I ended up taking the JLA bronze age out, because I'm way behind on the golden/silver/bronze age omnis. I keep going back and forth on whether I want to collect those or not. If I get V3, then I'll have to go back and get 1 and 2, and if I remember right, v1 is hard to find and a bit pricier. I'm "trying" to limit expenditures beyond DCBS, because I'll rapidly fall down the ebay hole if I'm not careful.

I will say the inferno stuff that I've read is pretty good. I'm right in the middle of the prologue content in my complete x-men read. Noting earthshattering so far, but still quality Claremont.

message 7070: by J (new)

J | 531 comments I'll probably add that X-Men book back in. Loved Claremont's X-Men when I was in HS and still enjoy reading those older tales. But I missed out on a lot of his later material so kinda want to get those and get caught up.

I went ahead and got the JLA omni because it has issues never collected before, but kinda ticked that DC did that wedding of the Atom book just last year, which will cover about 1/2 of this new omni. I really hate double dipping but decided to because about 1/2 of the first BA volume was in the last couple of Archives. So I'm being inconsistent with the Marvel stuff. ha.

Thanks for the heads-up on dcbs.

I ordered:
Absolute Swamp Thing V3
Fantastic Four Omni V4
Immortal Hulk OHC V4

message 7072: by Jeff (new)

Jeff | 209 comments Yah, I'm sure I'll end up getting it eventually. Right now I need to prioritize more bookshelf space. I'm completely out. 7 bookcases full right now, plus a bunch of boxes for the rest of it! I really need a library lol

message 7073: by Ryan (new)

Ryan | 146 comments This month crushing me.

Ordered:
ASM Vol 3 and 5 Omnis DM covers
FF Vol 4 DM
McFarlane Spider-Man Omni DM Black Costume
Absolute Swamp Thing

Love that Wolverine cover on McFarlane Spidey so I may switch to that...I’m going to regret whichever one I settle on and wish I chose the other 😑

When it releases I’ll probably get the Alias Omni too but I had to cut it off somewhere on the preorder.

message 7074: by Nickviola (new)

Nickviola | 1019 comments Does DCBS have the ASM listed wrong? Looks like v3 and v5 have the wrong corresponding pictures

message 7075: by Blindzider, Moderator (new)

Blindzider | 3293 comments Mod
Yes! That’s why I was confused. I thought I just forgot how things were numbered and their cover.

message 7076: by Caleb (new)

Caleb | 14 comments The listing for ASM on DCBS is definitely wrong. I thought I was seeing things.

message 7077: by Darth Bane (new)

Darth Bane | 261 comments I ordered ASM vol 5 DM, FF vol 4 DM, Absolute Swamp Thing vol 3.

And yes DCBS has the vol 3 and 5 ASM photos swapped. The title and descriptions are accurate though. I sent them an email after I ordered to give them a heads up!

Hamza (hamzadawud) | 26 comments I've most recently gotten the Marvel Horror Omnibus, but there are more collected editions on the way! Still waiting for CGN to ship my Uncanny X-Men Volume 4 omni, for example.

Funny you should say that - it's actually on the way to me as we speak, lol. I was fortunate to get the DM variant cover on eBay. I really wasn't big on the regular cover, so I was fortunate to not have to spend too much in the auction!

Where can I find Absolute Swamp Thing vol 3?

I can't find it on Cheap Graphic Novels or Amazon.

Has this release been announced on NMC?

DCBS is the best out there. But, they operate very differently than others. When you preorder, you might not actually get the book for 3-6 months. When it does ship, depending on what you select for shipping, it may not ship the week it comes out either. You will get it the month it comes out though, along with any other preorders from that month.

If you're not in a rush and don't care if it comes to you same day as release, DCBS is the easiest way to preorder. Just know that they will charge you for the total order upfront, and not when it's shipped (like amazon).

message 7085: by noelbeast (new)

noelbeast | 489 comments There’s a lot of love going on here for DCBS right now, which is great and I don’t want to hurt any of the vibe, but was there a comment at some point about them canceling a preorder someone had? Looked through the last few pages and couldn’t find it, but distinctly remember recently someone saying something about a canceled preorder—vaguely recall either DCBS or maybe ToW, fairly certain it wasn’t CGN.

Based on how tight the IST window was last week, I’d like to start preordering some books. That potential DCBS 3-6 month wait has got me hesitant, though, especially if there’s a chance I might not even get some orders due to cancellation.

Another option is talesofwonder.com
They also do preorders with 50% discount. They operate a little differently than DCBS when it comes to shipping and when they charge you.

instocktrades used to give 50% discount on the day the book was released (not every book but the expected big sellers). However, during COVID they dropped the discount to a lower amount. It remains to be seen if they will ever raise that back up.

Someone with more knowledge can correct me, but cheapgraphicnovels.com used to work like IST with 50% discount on release day. Not sure if that is still true. They have also started doing pre-orders, but I'm not sure how that operates.

In the limited time I've preordered from DCBS, the only thing canceled from my orders was for a book that was pulled by the publisher, to be resolicited.

I have a few preorders with dcbs now, but I'm not totally sold on them yet. The one time I did TOW.com I was happy. May try to spread orders around a little bit. I don't like paying for something so far in advance (for anything), but quick release day sellouts are starting to concern me.

noelbeast | 489 comments Found it, comment from Rel: https://imgur.com/a/tiTR19l

Back in October, god I hate COVID. My perception of the passage of time is apparently slipping.

Hopefully it’s a pretty rare occurrence if DCBS preorders ever have to be cancelled.

message 7090: by Relstuart, Mod+ (new)

Relstuart | 2964 comments Mod
Those sorts of cancelations should be very rare because at this state in the pre-order they should be ordering prior to the actual printing so your order should be factored into the print run size (should is the operative word here).

I saw someone comment they had a pre-order canceled with the notation they ran out of books but I feel like that has to be a very rare circumstance based on how early DCBS does their orders.

Might be worth noting that you can order a few omnibus volumes via pre-order and plan on picking up other things on release if you are trying to soften your current/future purchase amount. No requirement to go all or nothing. =)

Thanks Rel, appreciate the reassurances. I would hope that if they must cancel something, it’s prior to release so that the buyer still has other options to pursue to try to secure a copy. Seems to be the case if they’re ordering prior to the printings, but sure, no system is perfect. Years back I was hesitant with transitioning to IST, now I love them and even they’ve cancelled a book or 2 on me. Since DCBS owns them there’s not a lot of reason to hesitate.

Solo Leveling is a new (in English) series that is all in color and set up to read from left to right (our normal). I enjoyed the first book if that is something that might of interest.

Probably interested in Berserk DLX 7, Doctor Aphra omnibus, Rogue Planet TPB (by Cullen Bunn), and the Superman Last Son DLX. Fantastic Four OHC by Slott will probably get added to the wish list.

noelbeast | 489 comments I’ll be picking up the Golden Age Captain America reprint, out of curiosity mostly but also due to my disappointment that the Marvel Famous Firsts box set didn’t include Cap’s true first issues. Never actually read a golden age comic, but trying to keep my expectations low since I know some silver age comics are even a bit of a slog.

Was also hoping that the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe: Deluxe Edition omni dropped today. Maybe next week?

I have the first print of the Golden Age Cap. I like both covers but if I had to do it over now I'd probably go for the variant cover.

I just noticed the Avengers the Crossing Omnibus is out of print and getting pricey. I still haven't read mine - it's not supposed to be one of the better events.

In other news, if you are potentially interested in the newest book (in English) by Alejandro Jodorowsky, The Knights of Heliopolis, it's 47% off on Amazon if you want risk their shipping. That seems likely to be cheaper than IST's price. The posting has pictures of the art if you want a feel for the book:
