What have you added to your collection recently?

Picked up the Thor by Jason Aaron & Russell Dauterman Vol 2 Deluxe or OHC, whatever Marvel calls it. I missed a lot of Thor the past few years so filling in some gaps.
And also (don't laugh, please) picked up the two HCs of DC's Super Friends comic from the 70s and 80s. This was a favorite comic when I was a kid, plus it had great art by Ramona Fradon, who was a long time Aquaman artist in the 60s (and maybe 50s) as well as the artist that gave Metamorpho his unique look in his comic from the 60s. Fun, all-ages comics, which I think are sorely missed in today's comics world. (I'm definitely looking forward to the new Batman/Scooby Doo team up book.)

I used to love the Super Friends cartoons back in the day when I was a kid, but never read the comics so don’t know how they compare. Have you ever seen the show Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law? Just watched the Super Friends/Apache Chief episode the other night where he spills hot coffee in his lap and sues for losing his ability to “enlarge”. Great humor that also pokes fun at overlooked cartoon minority heroes.

Happy birthday Jeff! Sounds like a great present for yourself.

The comic was fairly serious but kid-friendly. I loved when it introduced the international heroes who became the Global Guardians. The writer of most of the run just had a way with making the plots interesting enough without weighing them down. He was a wealth of DC trivia and brought in various supporting characters from the Silver Age. Just tons of fun.

Thank you. I couldn't bring myself to pull the trigger either. If it wasn't in a lot with the other two, I probably would never have gotten it. As it was, I ended up only paying slightly more than the cost of volume 1 for all 3. Just couldn't pass up the chance.

I also managed to get BPRD Plague of Frogs 4 in hardcover and now have the complete BPRD set. I'm sure next week there will be reprints announced!

Pulled out half the collection for organizing today. I knew I’d notice somethings, but I was caught off guard on how few Cap Omnis have been put out in the past 15 years.

Thanks for the heads up. Definitely want to try some other outlets as IST doesn’t offer the 50% discount anymore and have increased shipping rates. I used to get free shipping nearly all the time. Now UPS ground is a minimum of $4 despite a several hundred dollar order
Hey All,
My LCS drew a line in the sand with pick up frequency and cancelled my box without notice (worked with me for nearly 8 years but I think Covid sales got them panicked so waiting 4-6 weeks for me to pick up wasn’t good enough anymore). A true shame as I do encourage all to stick local when you can.
That being said, I’m looking to online retailers for single issue subscriptions. I used to order direct form DC and Marvel as I believe it’s the cheapest way to go, however, too often did books come bent or ripped and replacement was an issue.
I’m also looking to just have all subscriptions with a single company as I have some Image and DH titles too.
Any recommendations?

Unfortunately, I have decided to stop using them due to some jarring stuff they include in their emails from their owner, Buddy. Not to bring politics into this board because it’s the last thing we all need, but their weekly emails include links to “Buddy’s Banter,” his blog where he rants about how the United States election was stolen, the radical left is stealing our country, etc.
I’m not one to boycott over differing politics, but this kind of talk crossed a line for me, so now I made a pull list with DCBS. I haven’t received my first shipment yet, but my experience preordering hardcovers with them has always been excellent, so I’m hoping for the best.
If the stolen election political stuff isn’t a deal breaker for you, I really can recommend MyComicShop. I was actually saddened to leave them, as they really were excellent in the service they provide.
I hope I didn’t just take a flamethrower to this message board
I've been using G-Mart for single issues: https://www.g-mart.com/
I found them around ten years ago and used their subscription service for a few years and then went on hiatus from single issues for at least five years. I started back up with a couple things once I discovered custom binding.

A bit ridiculous, but I’m buying the ASM vol. 2 again because my current copy is the Ramos cover and I can’t stand modern reworkings of iconic artwork, plus my other volumes are each the DM variants. I’ll regret it if I don’t buy the Romita cover this time around, so I guess someone will just get a good deal on the standard ed. on eBay whenever I get around to selling it.
Tomorrow’s going to be a bit more expensive than I originally anticipated. Still no X of Swords? Amazon has it listed as releasing Feb. 2nd, but PreviewsWorld has it listed dropping in shops Feb. 10th.

Haven't bought single issues in a few years, but used to use Midtown Comics. Never had any problems.

Forbidden Comics NYC has sent me some beat up comics sold as new and was not pleased.
Has anyone used Mile High Comics? There’s some back issues I’ve been wanting to buy for a while now to do a custom bind.

Rel has a lot of experience in that field if memory serves me correct, so I’d talk to him.
Houchen or Herring & Robinson are the two most well-regarded with collectors, H&R getting a slight edge I think. They also have details on their websites about size limits, etc. I started planning a few volumes about a year ago—can be a bit of work depending on your level of perfectionism.
Joe, Rel does have a lot experience there. My experience is don’t go too big. At first I tried to create some big tomes but when using single issues and making large books, the gutter loss increases. This is a bigger problem with more modern comics as many have art and text in the gutter section. Best to stay small and create multiple volumes for more money, than to save money with fewer but larger binds.
Some ideas: create a table of contents and submit it. Fun idea is to print it on top of some found comic art.
I personally like to keep the ads, but if you’re concerned with size and price, you can remove pages that are t necessary
Lastly, if it’s more about a specific story, TPBs are great to pull apart to create a larger HC, rather than hunting down all the single issues.

Erik:
Do you pull apart your own TPBs, or let the binder do it? Also, have you ever used any other books for a custom bind, either you or binder taking them apart? I’ve got some marvel premiere edition hardcovers (roughly same size as TPBs) that I got on the cheap I want to use for a future project.
I bought the massive TASCHEN 75 Years of Marvel hardcover book from Atomic Comics a few years ago. I don’t remember state of packaging, but the carrying case the book comes in was a bit beat up on the inside. Book was fine, heavy though, so can’t necessarily blame them. Nothing negative lingers in my mind about the overall experience.
Joseph wrote: "Speaking of custom binding, I'd appreciate some feedback on trusted binders. Are there size limits, either too few or too many?"
I believe Noelbeast is correct, Houchen and Herring and Robinson seem to the be the most commonly used book binders for custom comic binds. I've personally only used Herring and Robinson: http://www.herringandrobinsonbookbind...
Picture of a few books I had bound from our group photos: https://www.goodreads.com/photo/group...
In the green book, I had single issues, a couple TPB volumes, and I also took apart a standard size hardback with a text block the same size as the TPB volumes that I had all bound together (this one ended being a gift to a friend. I usually do the prep work and take out staples and cut off the back covers for my single issues. Makes the binding process go a bit faster once the binder picks up my order.
I tried some advice I received to microwave a TPB to make the glue run and separate the cover from the text block that way. Terrible idea because the glue ran onto the pages. Cutting things with a sharp knife worked a lot better for me.
I did a couple really thick binds and agree with Erik those aren't the ideal way to go. I usually aim for somewhere around 25 to 30 issues as my max in a single bind now. But that does depend a bit on how thick the paper is and how many add pages/back covers you cut out to slim down the material. I would be hesitant to go much over two inches of material in a single bind (Herring and Robinson asks that you don't go over 2 and half inches for their standard oversewn binds).

Having pulled out nearly everything from storage, I’ll post a few odd observations.
First up: Surprisingly, DC has released almost no Omnis in the past 5+ years for Superman other than the Reign of Superman Omnibus.

Well, they've had the golden age stuff, Exile, and Superman/Batman, but only Exile is really straight modern (post-Crisis) Supes. This year has a few coming out too, with New 52 Omnis and the Generations Omni. But yah... for such a massive property, they certainly don't collect him well.

I liked the Tomasi run as well. I have the OHC volumes and am satisfied with those but happy if the material gets a wider audience with the omnibus. I'm curious to see if the Bendis Superman run gets an omnibus with his name recognition? No OHCs for his run so it would be the sole way to get his run in oversize format.
There is a lot of modern material that DC could be putting in omnibus. I feel like the Abnett Aquaman run got a lot of positive chatter and I've been halfway expecting to see a solicitation for the run especially with the character getting a feature film but nothing yet.

I still don't have anything updated from them. Still showing last week's releases.

CGN is selling them. I've got Teen Titans coming from DCBS, but I'm really looking forward to ASM v2

I’ll keep checking periodically to see if anything changes.

Thanks! Somehow didn’t see Rel’s update earlier today, which started giving me FOMO anxiety. Absolutely ridiculous in the grand scheme of things, but still legitimate lately with how stock on some items just evaporates...
