Some of the books likely to be released next week on IST:
Infinity Crusade Omnibus
Uncanny X-Men 3 Omnibus (reprint)
X-Men by Lee/Claremont 1 Omnibus (reprint)
Moon Knight Omnibus vol 1
Savage Conan The Original Marvel Years vol 4
Infinity Crusade Omnibus
Uncanny X-Men 3 Omnibus (reprint)
X-Men by Lee/Claremont 1 Omnibus (reprint)
Moon Knight Omnibus vol 1
Savage Conan The Original Marvel Years vol 4
I actually have both X-Men Omnis and Moon Knight preordered from a while back for next week. Weird that they all ended up on the same day and killer on the wallet. I also want the Rise of the Batmen Omni but I haven’t pulled the trigger yet.
I'm in for Crusade, Moon Knight, and Savage Conan. I have the others already, but still a heavy week for Omnis.
Is the old marvel Conan stuff that great? I assumed these omnis sold so well because of the DH Conan runs.
Although I love Bronze Age comics I. general, Conan was a huge game changer and helped usher in the age of sword and sorcery type fantasy comics, at both Marvel and DC. Roy Thomas wrote about half of the 270-odd issue run, which gave it a strong cohesiveness as well as Thomas's ability to weave a good tale. Barry Windsor-Smith rose to prominence as the first artist on the book, and other artists include John and Sal Buscemi, Neal Adam's, and others. Although the newsstand issues in the regular Conan omnis are PG rated, at best, the B/W Savage Sword of Conan series was not subjected to the Comics Code Authority and was slightly more adult in content (mostly topless women). But is it good? I say yes. I've never read the original novels so can't say how true to the original content Thomas was, bit there isn't a lot to begin with, I don't think. Being a product of the 70s and 80s it won't read like the Dark Horse run, but these were some meaty comics in their day and probably one of the best series at Marvel during that decade.
These Conans were John Buscema's favorites, his black and white Savage stuff really pops with the great inking done. Probably also good to collect while they have the property before its window lapses.
I hadn't read the older Marvel Conan content before but based on feedback similar to what Joseph shared I've been picking up the Savage Conan omnibus volumes. I've read the first volume and enjoyed it. It's not similar to the fantastic Busiek run (which I certainly recommend) but it reminds me more of the old original Tarzan/John Carter of Mars novels. Pulpy fun from a different era.
Will plan on picking up vol 4 next week along with the Infinity Crusade Omnibus.
Happy last day of the year. =)

Expensive week. I'm in for Moon Knight, Uncanny X-Men v3, and X-Men v1 Omnibuses. I would be in for Guardians of the Galaxy if I had any idea what they are doing with Cates' Cosmic Omnibuses.

Do I go in for the OHCs, or hope they're going to go in a later Omni? Wish we knew Marvels plans at all!
Anyone have experience with what's in the Moon Knight Omnibus? I am leaving the days of buying all old Marvel omnibus material but this continues to interest me. I know the character wasn't fleshed out, but is this worth reading or are the people buying it just putting it up on the shelf?
Nickviola wrote: "Anyone have experience with what's in the Moon Knight Omnibus? I am leaving the days of buying all old Marvel omnibus material but this continues to interest me. I dont remember a whole lot about the actual MK comic series, except the great Sienkiewicz art. Doug Moench wrote the early issues and Denny O'Neill edited and they both were always great over at DC on Batman and the Question. I just wasn't a huge Marvel guy at the time and probably didn't read each issue more than once. And when it went direct-only, I know I must have stopped reading because we didn't have a LCS in my town. But I'm willing to give it a try because of the creative team, although I'm not sure who did the non-MK stories in this omni.
I’d be surprised if decent sales of this didn’t lead to more modern Moon Knight Omnis with the Disney+ series coming out. Marvel seems to be smartly aligning some of the releases with the new shows, like the What If Omni on the way. I’ve never read a single word of Moon Knight but I ordered it, I’m intrigued by the comparisons to Batman and the art, and as I always say, I can always easily sell an Omni if it’s not my cup of tea.
I'm also not into many pre-1980s superhero comics, but Moon Knight only has a handful of decent runs (Moench, Huston, Ellis, Lemire, etc.). I'm a fan of the character from what I've read so far and it's nice knowing that I only need a few books for the collection to feel "complete". But, yeah, Sienkiewicz art is a big draw. TBH, it'll probably sit on the shelf until right before the Disney+ show airs lol.
FYI: I’m seeing people state the Uncanny X-Men reprint 3 (both covers) coming next week is sold out with Diamond distributors which means once it sells out there won’t be more copies for reorder.
Relstuart wrote: "FYI: I’m seeing people state the Uncanny X-Men reprint 3 (both covers) coming next week is sold out with Diamond distributors which means once it sells out there won’t be more copies for reorder."So long as I can get a copy of Vol 4 coming soon... Been waiting for that one for way too long!
One more comment about Marvel's Conan omnis, they use the original coloring or at least the original coloring schemes. (Not sure about the technical details.) When DH reprinted the Marvel's issues they used updated coloring which just looks terrible on older comics. (See just about anything that reprints Neal Adams's Batman issues).
I think the recoloring is a bigger issue if you grew up with the original. This past year, I read Absolute Swamp Thing and The Sandman Omnibus Vol 1 for the first time, and since it was new to me, it wasn’t an issue. I would still prefer original coloring because I like to experience it as it was intended, but it really didn’t take away from my enjoyment at all. I totally get how it annoys people who have nostalgic love for the original colors though.
Was it digital coloring? I haven't seen either of those books but you're the second person to say to me he liked the new coloring. Certainly not opposed to cleaning up old coloring issues like where colors would bleed into surrounding areas and look splotchy. It's hard to put into words why it looks so bad to me, though.
You're right, it could certainly be nostalgic reasons but it's akin to why I don't like colorized B/W movies. The art, as was the film, was made for a limited color palette. It's one reason why a lot of older comics art wasn't as detailed. It just wasn't feasible to print and color art that thoroughly, especially on newsprint.
It seems to me that using new coloring technology breaks with the original intent of the artists, including the original colorists, who were pretty late in getting recognition for their work. It erases their contributions which were just as important as the pencillers, inkers, letterers, etc.
But then again, a lot of original coloring looks rather garish on the super white paper, so...*shrugs*.
Off topic but anyone have any idea when Gotham Central and Secret Warriors Omnis gonna be reprinted?
Horrid wrote: "Off topic but anyone have any idea when Gotham Central and Secret Warriors Omnis gonna be reprinted?"I haven't seen anything solicited about those, so I wouldn't expect anything anytime soon.
Joseph, I’m not totally sure about the process but I will say that in Absolute Swamp Thing, they didn’t transform the artwork into some super modern digital mess that ruins the original intent. They did a really good job of kind of enhancing the original look without it looking too overly modern and digital. It’s a gorgeous book. I would still prefer the original colors just for the sake of preserving history, but when I went back and compared the two, it actually eased my mind a bit about the recoloring. In that case, they were done in a classy way.
Now Killing Joke is a book that I grew up reading with the original colors, so I do kind of prefer them to the recoloring. In that case, the Absolute has both versions, which is a fantastic idea, but only really viable because it’s such a short story to turn into an Absolute. They had to fill that space somehow lol

Killing Joke is a perfect example of what they shouldn't do. The new coloring wasn't even done by the original colorist. The new colors are very bland and actually change the tone/feel of the story, IMO.
For Absolute Swamp Thing I believe the original colorist did the new one.

I like what they did for absolute Batman year one. You get the original coloring version and an update.
Just ordered Hellblazer by Garth Ennis omnibus. Had some Amazon gift card money burning a hole in my pocket and the book is only $81 now, which is about as low as I’ve seen it.
Ryan wrote: "Just ordered Hellblazer by Garth Ennis omnibus. Had some Amazon gift card money burning a hole in my pocket and the book is only $81 now, which is about as low as I’ve seen it."Did you try ebay or other sites?

I haven't seen that anywhere for less than $100. Good find.
Believe it or not it’s being sold from Amazon itself on Prime. Says I will have it on Wednesday and ships from Amazon. Great price, but of course since it’s from Amazon I have to keep my fingers crossed about the packaging. If anyone has been looking for that book brand new at a good price, I’d grab it. I believe it’s also in stock on IST for $87 last time I checked but I routinely see it go for over $100 on eBay.

I don't actually have that one yet, as I have the rest of the Hellblazer books in the 24 and counting TPB set. Putting an omni in the middle of those would look odd, I think. I wish they'd collect the whole thing in Omnibus, as I bet it looks beautiful in that format.
It's the same reason I don't have the Dini batman omni. I've got it all collected in TPB, but the omni leaves out issues here and there, and I don't want to lose those in my overall collection.
I finished reading Wonder Woman Dead Earth Black Label DLX and thought it was great. Sets the bar for best DC material I've read this year pretty high.
Die TPB vol 3 was another solid chapter in the story that maintained great art and interesting story telling.
Reckless by Brubaker was good. Not a happy story.

I picked up the Once an Invader (standard Alex Ross cover), Promised Neverland TPB vol 18, Infinity Crusade (standard cover) and Savage Sword of Conan (DM variant cover). Logged on about ten minutes after 2pm and didn't have any issues ordering.

I mean... you have a point. =D

I picked up the Moon Knight DM variant and the Y: The Last Man omni since it’s been sitting in my want list for quite some time now. I sat there for about 10 minutes periodically refreshing my phone browser for either version of the Moon Knight book to become available, only to eventually realize that the first 2 listings on my screen were essentially placeholders, and the purchasable copies were the next 2 down. Other than my own ineptitude, no problems.
I bought the Moon Knight DM variant, only because of this group and Sienkiewicz art. Decided to hold off on the Jim Lee X-Men reprint, which I'm sure I'll regret at some point.
That Once an Invader is a pretty decent story. I think you will like it.

I picked up UXM Omnibus v3 Smith DM variant, X-Men Claremont/Lee Omnibus reg, Moon Knight Omnibus reg. Wondering where the Opena cover UXM Omnibus v3 is.... Did anyone else not get the 2% discount on subsequent orders?I feel like I'm batting off crows/locusts everytime I refresh the page. Some books are out of stock already.
Their website warns that the discount, when eligible, might take an hour or 2 to apply after your first purchase. The last time I bought from IST, I had to wait about 30 mins or so. Wasn’t following the reprint of UXM vol 3 very closely, but we’re they doing 3 different covers? My older copy is the Opena cover, and I briefly considered going for the DM variant with this reprint, since I prefer original covers to most other designs.
Edit: scratch that, somehow invented in my mind that there was a third “standard” cover that never existed.
Interesting. I guess it's never really been an issue before so I never had to worry about waiting for the discount lol. That makes all this checkout rush stuff that much more annoying though.
Snagged the DM Moon Knight, and Conan, and the regular Infinity Crusade. I just prefer the regular cover over the DM for Crusade. Already had both X-Men, though I still considered getting the DM copies to replace mine with.. But, I'll stick with the first printings.
As expected, this was an expensive week. May skip next week (depending on what's coming out, I guess).I got the Moon Knight, Uncanny X-Men Vol 3, Infinity Crusade, Savage Sword of Conan, and a couple trades I was missing. I usually get the "regular" covers as it's not a big deal to me, but looks like I got the DM cover for X-Men.
Just curious, has anyone else NOT gotten an email from IST when your order was completed? I didn't for the past 3 weeks and so far haven't received one for today's order. Usually they're fairly instantaneous. The previous orders are still getting fulfilled, and I get shipping updates, so it's not getting lost.

Mine came through about 30 minutes after I placed the order, but I still got it. It's definitely not as quick as it used to be though.
Jeff wrote: "Mine came through about 30 minutes after I placed the order, but I still got it. It's definitely not as quick as it used to be though..."Interesting. Thanks!
Got both X-Men Omnis and Moon Knight Omni, all DM variants. I generally prefer the artwork on the cover to match the art on the inside of the book, although it’s not a total deal breaker to me. Will be my first time reading Moon Knight.
IST also sent me an email later than usual, 45 minutes.I got X-men regular cover because I have it in Italian with the DM; uncanny 3 Paul smith cover; moon knight old school over, infinity crusade old school cover, and took a flyer on Always a Defender and got the skottie cover in case I don’t like it he’s so popular figure it’s easier to sell. Expensive week, sheesh.
Also I heard Uncanny X 2 omni is going to get restocked? Is that true? I hope so, ended up getting it off Amazon for 100 and would love to drop that to 50 but only have until 1/31 to return it. Plus I’d like the old school cover.
