Nickviola | 1019 comments I love East of West, it’s very over the top Hickman writing but it’s got funny really well defined characters and the Dragotta art is amazing. Some central characters age up as you go and it’s fun to watch that happen, but both the facial expressions and the panoramic shots are great.

Strangely, I just rebought Trial of Captain America and Return of Winter soldier for about 110 on eBay, exactly what I sold them for a year ago. But seeing the other Brubaker reprints I’m guessing these books that were ubiquitous and cheap will finally be hard to find again and completing the set of 5 is now possible. Not 100% sure Marvel would reprint these even if they reprint Death and Lives omnibuses.

Holy crap Rick. Was all that in one order?!

message 6805: by Jeff (new)

Jeff | 209 comments Just visited one of my LCS' for the first time in a few months. Found the following Omni's sealed and retail price: Captain America Vol 2, Tomb of Dracula Vol 1 and 3, and Fourth World by Kirby. Then came home to find ASM Vol 1 (by lee) had finally arrived after almost a month of waiting. Pretty exciting day for me lol.

message 6806: by Ryan (new)

Ryan | 146 comments Jeff where did you order the ASM Vol 1? Definitely one I’m searching for but eBay prices are a bit crazy and I figure it’s a book that will inevitably get a reprint so I don’t want to over pay.

message 6807: by Jeff (new)

Jeff | 209 comments I got it on ebay in an auction. Won it for about 150. With V2 getting reprinted, I figure they'll reprint all the others before getting back to V1, so I wanted to get it now while I could.

message 6808: by Ryan (new)

Ryan | 146 comments Nice, I’m going to end up giving in and doing a similar thing but I try to stick to my rule of not paying over cover for books. $150 isn’t bad, I’ve seen it go for over $200.

message 6809: by Jeff (new)

Jeff | 209 comments Yah, I usually set myself a ceiling when I bid for books. At 4 seconds remaining, I'll submit a bid at that ceiling and see what happens. I've gotten some super cheap omnis like that ($26 silver surfer).. and also ended up paying my ceiling on a few ($290 iron man DM variant) lol.

I've learned if I'm going to eventually buy a book, then I might as well get it when it first comes out, instead of deferring and paying crazy aftermarket costs once it's OOP.

message 6810: by Ryan (new)

Ryan | 146 comments Wow $26 for Silver Surfer is an incredible buy!

message 6811: by Jeff (new)

Jeff | 209 comments Yup. I couldn't believe that was the winning bid. I was ready to go much higher lol.

message 6812: by Jesse (new)

Jesse A (jaathey) | 332 comments not to be a bummer but is that the silver surfer with the misprint?

message 6813: by Jeff (new)

Jeff | 209 comments No idea, it's sealed, and staying that way.

message 6814: by Ryan (new)

Ryan | 146 comments Do you not open any of your Omnis? If so, mind blown.

message 6815: by Jeff (new)

Jeff | 209 comments Ryan wrote: "Do you not open any of your Omnis? If so, mind blown."

Not my marvel ones. I've got Marvel Unlimited, so I read them there and keep the books sealed if possible. It hurts me to open my DC ones.. but DC's app just hasn't quite caught up with their library.

message 6816: by Ryan (new)

Ryan | 146 comments That’s cool, they look great on the shelf so even if you don’t open them I understand it as a collectible purchase. I just can’t resist reading them with the oversized artwork and the feel of the page in my hands. I do love reading digitally on the iPad when I’m laying in bed with the lights out.

message 6817: by Jeff (new)

Jeff | 209 comments I certainly prefer reading from the book, but my job has me away often, and lugging a bunch of books everywhere I go isn't feasible, so I had to convert to digital. But, I still like owning what I've read and being able to display it.

message 6818: by Ryan (new)

Ryan | 146 comments For sure. Certainly the Omnis are too big to lug around. Digital reading is so convenient. I also like to bring my trade paperbacks with me when I go to the beach in the summer, which is a good amount. Nothing better than sitting in that chair and just binge reading.

message 6819: by Jeff (new)

Jeff | 209 comments I bet that's relaxing. No beaches near me unfortunately! Plenty of cornfields though lol.

Donovan | 1154 comments Hey ya'll it's been a while. Had to take a break from comics for a bit for finances but now I'm easing back in. Recently picked up Hellboy Library Vol. 1, Paper Girls DLX Vols. 2-3, Joker: Killer Smile, Batman: Three Jokers. Hope ya'll are well during these crazy times.

Welcome back Donovan, good to see you around again! I see a lot of pictures of collections on Reddit and those Hellboy Library volumes are always looking nice sitting on someone’s shelf.

Welcome back!

I've started purchasing the Hellboy's also, but V3 and up are sold out at IST so I've been patiently waiting.

message 6826: by Jeff (new)

Jeff | 209 comments As an Omnibus collector, I want that 100 Bullets book. But... I have the deluxe hardcovers, which are very hard to find and quite expensive. They're beautiful too... So, I don't know if I want to "upgrade" or not.

message 6827: by Tigertemprr (new)

Tigertemprr | 54 comments I (almost) always sell the out of print books when the new collections are announced/solicited. My collection is self-sustaining (and growing) as a result, but I know that's not important to every collector.

I used to have lots of sentimental/emotional connections to specific books/series, but after a certain collection size... that attachment has spread thin over so many great books. They also just sit on a shelf for 99% of their existence which helps in rationalizing their revolving-door replacement.

message 6828: by Jeff (new)

Jeff | 209 comments That's a fair point. I know I could recoup a significant investment by upgrading to the Omnibus. Plus, I would be able to keep it sealed, as I've already read the material. I've done that with some hard to find marvel trades before, but this would be my first time with OHCs. Hmm... decisions, decisions..

message 6829: by Jeff (new)

Jeff | 209 comments Invincible Iron Man Omnibus Volume 1, DM Variant arrived today. I opened it up, and found Stan Lee and Larry Lieber's signatures, WITH certificate of authenticity. Nowhere in the seller's listing did they mention signatures, so I am absolutely blown away right now. What an addition.

message 6831: by Paul (last edited Jan 11, 2021 12:49PM) (new)

Paul (paulsaini) | 163 comments Hey everyone. Happy (belated) New Year to you all. Haven't commented in a while but have been keeping up with the forum from time to time. It was a crazy time collecting this past year and so glad to see the hobby expand as much as it has to new collectors!

In the UK, I don't think it was as crazy as it was in the States with some of your IST/CGN stories with books selling out. Some books took longer to get stocked but I was able to get mostly everything I was after with the exception of She-Hulk by Slott...still can't find it! I ended up relying mostly on eBay book stores for the best discounted prices and if all else failed I used Amazon UK (ugh).

Most recently I got Super Sons Expanded, East of West 3, Cruel Summer, Injustice Vol. 2, and lucked out getting a new copy of BPRD Plague of Frogs HC Vol 3. It was actually new...funny enough I got that shipped/sold from Amazon US out of all places for a fair price! Now just need vol.4...

How's everyone looking for 2021? Does anyone else make spreadsheets to budget and plan what they're going to buy? As of now I'm planning on about 40 books of which half are omnis...anyone else running out of space!?

I'm sure I'll collect more as solicits come out, but my family and I launched a new business in 2020 so budget is everything at the moment. :)

message 6832: by J (new)

J | 531 comments Personally, job wise things are steady and looking good. I decided to basically double my budget for books because I just miss out on too much and then books are OOP and too much to fork out to acquire.

I don't make a spreadsheet to map out what I'll buy. I just go week to week. If it's a week where there's not a lot of new material, then I'll dip into my wish list and pick something out.

I'm slowly using up all the room in my "library" but one solution has been to get rid of regular books I've read and will not read again. We have several of those Free Little Libraries around town so I just drop them off a few at a time at those. I'd rather have my comics related books!

message 6833: by Blindzider, Moderator (new)

Blindzider | 3293 comments Mod
Jeff, you are so lucky!

Paul, welcome back! Space is always a concern. I'm in the process of figuring out what I can/should get rid of and maybe rearranging some things.

message 6834: by J (new)

J | 531 comments Man, I guess everyone is spending their stimulus checks here in the US. It was a light week for me, so I thought I'd browse through my wishlist on IST and see what I could plug in.

Turns out my wishlist was about 30% sold out, just from last week. Yi. I guess I'll be looking at CGN and Ebay for some stuff now.

message 6835: by Jeff (new)

Jeff | 209 comments Harbinger Wars 2 isn't on IST which is frustrating.. Had to go to CGN and pick it up. Otherwise, a very light week. We're closing in on my first DCBS preorders too, so things might start getting very light for me as far as week-to-week ordering. I'm ok with that lol.

message 6836: by J (new)

J | 531 comments Same here, Jeff. Looking forward to that monster DCBS package.

It officially happened . . . I can’t remember if I have a book or not. Does that mean I have too many?

message 6838: by J (new)

J | 531 comments Erik, even with a spreadsheet, I have bought more than one copy of a book. Luckily nothing too expensive!

message 6839: by Jeff (new)

Jeff | 209 comments Joseph wrote: "Erik, even with a spreadsheet, I have bought more than one copy of a book. Luckily nothing too expensive!"

That used to happen to me when I'd be traveling and visiting LCS's. I downloaded the CLZ Comics app, uploaded all my stuff, and now I can quickly and easily check what I have in the collection from anywhere.

Sounds like an ad, but it's not. I just really like the app.

message 6840: by J (new)

J | 531 comments Sounds good, Jeff. I'll have to check it out. I just have a spreadsheet I created with Google spreadsheet in my cloud. Fairly organized, but I still miss things occasionally.

Jeff,

I took your advice and downloaded that app. I agree, it's really a great app. I've been having a lot of fun scanning my books. It even allows me to scan comics magazines like Back Issue. I thought the annual price was very reasonable (US$14.99).

I've had a couple older trades not in the database, and a couple of the recent Dawn of X trades scanned as volume 1, but with a database as large as comics, these are just very, very, very minor gaps.

I'll still keep my spreadsheet because I also track preorders, but this app is a very handy and more accessible (for me) way to check out what's in my collection.

Thanks for the recommendation!

I'm glad it worked out! I've only had a few gaps that I wasn't able to search out another way, but you're absolutely right that they've got a LOT in there. You can even take it a few layers further and add values, grading, etc to your books if you really wanted to. I just use it to track what I have so I don't double-dip, but still cool it's available.

Doesn't seem like it. I was going to pickup the MMW Spider-Woman V2 but not sure if that is coming out. If it does I have to find something else to get free shipping...
