Jeff | 209 comments Today's deliveries were pretty nice. Received X-Men Revolution Omnibus, X-Men Eve of Destruction OHC, and the Mutant Massacre Omnibus.

All are brand new still shrinkwrapped, and represent new material for my collection, with the exception of Mutant Massacre. That one is replacing the OHC I've had for a few years. Now to list the OHC on ebay!

noelbeast | 489 comments The X-Men: Revolution omnibus wasn’t the easiest buy for me. I had to have it because of the hole in my collection, but I previously read through all the issues it collects and...not good Claremont writing in my opinion. He introduced some new villains that were pretty forgettable and I’m fairly certain haven’t been see since. At least I got it for cheap from IST.

Eve of Destruction I liked, and can’t go wrong with Fall of the Mutants.

Nice X-Men pick ups. :)

I received the books I ordered from IST last Tuesday in the mail yesterday. Fastest I've gotten books from them in a while. =)

I'm about halfway through the Firefly Legacy DLX and I think it's capturing the feel of the characters from the show very well. It's a collection of stories - some from before and some after the TV show events. As someone that enjoyed the show, it's been a worthwhile read so far. Not sure a reader who hadn't seen the show would enjoy it as much.

I have a couple orders with IST that have a couple books needing to be "processed" while all the others are picked and scanned. It's been almost a month for one, but one book is just hanging out there, apparently.

J | 531 comments Only thing interesting to me today was the Avengers by Hickman Complete Collection, so I used by dollars to finally finish grabbing a bunch of older Marvel trades for Daredevil (finally complete from Bendis's run to today), Thor, and Avengers.

I usually pick up an omni or HC in my wishlist with each order, but I'm dying to get these older TPB collections complete.

But omnis and HCs on the way:

Daredevil by Brubaker and Lark Omnibus Vol 2
Marvel Horror Omnibus
Detective Comics #1027 Deluxe
She-Hulk by Slott Omni
Batman Three Jokers HC (from last week)
Excalibur Omni (also last week)

Is the new Marvel Conan Omni with Busiek the same material from Dark Horse that was collected in Colossal Conan?

Erik wrote: "Is the new Marvel Conan Omni with Busiek the same material from Dark Horse that was collected in Colossal Conan?"

It is the same material in Colossal Conan minus a few issues that were not by Busiek.

I would have ordered Berserk DLX vol 6 but it sold out while it was in my cart. Hellsing vol 2 also sold out about as quickly.

message 6660: by Jeff (new)

Jeff | 209 comments Continuing my X-Men OHC collection of late, X-Tinction Agenda arrived today to fill that annoying three issue gap between the Claremont/Lee Omni 1 and 2. I now have everything collected in OHC up to said vol 2. Been eyeballing a copy of phalanx covenant and bishops crossing that a local guy has for sale, but he wants $500 for the both of them. I'm hopeful he'll come down sometime soon.

Ryan | 146 comments In light of Omar’s news about the Fantastic Four Omnis coming, I finally pulled the trigger on FF Vol 1 today. I honestly struggle a bit to read the silver age stuff but it’s really the foundation of Marvel and I love the idea of having Volumes 1-4 on the shelf as a collector and someone who respects the history of the medium.

message 6662: by noelbeast (new)

I think if I did that, it would be the first time I bought something just for the shelf. Everything else I've read. Now you've got my collector brain going though. Is it so bad to buy it just to have it?

Haha! I've really been considering turning off the AutoCorrect on my phone. I think I spend more time backing up to fix it.

message 6665: by J (new)

J | 531 comments Jeff wrote: " Is it so bad to buy it just to have it?"

I find the early Lee Marvel stuff a bit...much, and this as a guy who loves Golden and Silver age comics. Too many times he wrote Sue Richards or the Wasp as damsels in distress. I don't remember the issue, but I have a screen shot of an Avengers story where he has the Wasp say, "If only I understood these things...like a man! I'll bet Goliath would have had this figured out by now." haha.

Nevertheless, I find the overall excitement and energy of these stories to be enough to propel my interest through some cringeworthy dialog. And by the time of FF #50 or so, things really pick up as Stan and Jack really expand the scope of the Marvel Universe.

Of course, Kirby's art alone is worth having these volumes. As much as I love DC, nothing DC was doing at the time (outside the war books) had even a tenth of the kinetic energy Kirby showed in his art.

And the last point, a good bit of later Marvel lore is set up in the early FF books: Black Panther, the Inhumans, etc. I love seeing how everything came about, bc everything seemed to *mean* something down the line.

As always, YMMV.

message 6666: by Ryan (new)

Ryan | 146 comments Jeff, I will definitely read all the FF Volumes at least once, so they wouldn’t only be for the shelf, but overall I would say that silver age can be tough at times, that’s all. As Joseph pointed out above, some of the dialog can be complete cringe, but this is really where the modern Marvel universe begins to flesh out and the artwork is timeless. So even though I’m overall not a silver age guy, I do plan on collecting these and Amazing Spider-Man from that era.

message 6667: by Nickviola (new)

Nickviola | 1019 comments In my opinion, I would add the subjective point that I think FF silver age is much more readable than Spider-Man and X-Men. I love X-Men and struggle with the initial run, I found SM unreadable with the 1960's angsty peter parker narration. While some of the villians are monster of the week, the family thread is strong throughout. And agree the art is incredible.

message 6668: by Jeff (new)

Jeff | 209 comments You're selling me on expanding my collection beyond it's mostly modern leanings. My wallet may come to regret this thread!! I have marvel unlimited, so I can always add the books to the shelf and read them digitally so I don't have to unseal them. We'll see. I have some other items on the wishlist before I could get to these though.

message 6669: by J (new)

J | 531 comments Nick, I think you've hit the proverbial nail on the head with the comment about the family structure. That really wasn't something readers saw in contemporary comics.

message 6670: by Blindzider, Moderator (new)

Blindzider | 3293 comments Mod
Agreed silver age can be hard to read at times. I like them so I can see for the original concepts and characters were introduced then compare them to how they are used nowadays.

For the FF, other than Kirby’s art, the amount of imagination that went into those stories astounds me.

message 6671: by Darth Bane (new)

Darth Bane | 261 comments The only silver age marvel I collect is FF, Spider-Man, and Thor. They are all great in their own way, but FF is easier to read through. Silver age gets "wordy" at times. After Thor 1 and FF 4 I will be all set!

message 6674: by J (new)

J | 531 comments If anyone here is a DC fan, although I love wacky Silver Age DC, even the Mort Weisinger Superman family books with all of Lois's scheming and Jimmy Olsen's transformations and the hugely optimistic Legion, I don't think there is much SA DC I could recommend to most people.

Exceptions are the various war comics, which had some rather poignant stories and terrific art by Joe Kubert, Russ Heath, and others. Then there is the original Doom Patrol series which reads more like a Marvel book than anything else DC was publishing at the time. The art isn't bad by any means although not Kirby, and writer Arnold Drake really captured the team as a group of outsider freaks compared to the JLA and Teen Titans, for example.

If you're a fan of old fashioned pulp sci-fi, then you might get into Gardner Fox's JLA, Atom, Hawkman, or John Broome's Green Lantern, or Edmund Hamilton's Legion. But although they had some great concepts, not the easiest books to read.

Anyone else here into comic strips? Very slowly going through the Milt Canniff Terry and the Pirates and have the Steve Canyon books lined up after.

Looks like the recent Dick Tracy books are about to wind up, but I missed out when they were first published and don't know if I want to spend the $$ to get those early volumes.

I have the complete Peanuts books and the HC boxed set of Calvin and Hobbes along with picking up the Prince Valiant books. I have a couple of the Steve Canyon books but missed some of the now hard to find volumes. As a kid I read a fair amount of paperback collected editions of Beetle Bailey, Peanuts, Garfield, The Far Side, and strips like that. I tried Pogo a year or so ago for the first time and it didn't land for me.

In for Eternals and Nightwing. This is one of the few times I prefer the normal cover to the variant. Anything by Ross gets my vote.

message 6686: by noelbeast (new)

noelbeast | 489 comments I’m really torn on which cover of Eternals to go after. I’d prefer Kirby art, but issue #18 on the front isn’t exactly singing to me. I wished they had kept the first issue as the cover, but since this expands the content from the original printing, I guess(?) makes sense to change...

The Peanuts books are another I missed. I got hooked on Steve Canyon when Kitchen Sink was publishing that magazine sized book back in the 80s.

message 6688: by J (new)

J | 531 comments Also, grabbed vols 2 and 3 of the IDW editions of the Star Hawks strip on GCN, which is having their cyber Monday sale. Also picked up some Marvel trades I was missing. They also have sales on IDW and Image, but not DC at the moment.

As much as I like Alex Ross, I'd rather have a Kirby cover, although #18 isn't the one I would have chosen.

Collectededitions has some preview art on the inside and also lists that the Alex Ross cover is included in the book (like many omnibus lately), which I appreciate.

The only comic strips I've read as an adult are Far Side and currently in the middle of Calvin and Hobbes. Did read Garfield back in the day though. Hoping to someday read the Spider-man strips straight through.

Ryan | 146 comments Far Side is my favorite comic strip ever. I think they are great for kids to develop a sense of humor, as I like to think I did. They remain just as funny as an adult.

I collected Garfield books as a kid, but now just mostly find them terribly unfunny. I have nostalgia for those comic strips but they just don’t hold up for me.

I totally agree about Far Side. To be able to pack that much thought and humor into one panel was always amazing to me.

I soured on Garfield as well. Just not funny at all. Hard to believe how crazy popular it was at the time.

For humor comics, Far Side and Calvin & Hobbs are my all time favorites. I never found Garfield all that funny, but liked Peanuts, Wizard of Id, Hagar the Horrible, BC, Beetle Bailey, Blondie, etc.

But really was a big fan of adventure strips and that's what I like collecting today. Prince Valiant, Steve Canyon, Johnny Trail, the Phantom, etc. Even some of the more, er, women's oriented strips like Brenda Starr and Apt 3G, etc., had some great storylines and fine art by folks who also drew comic books.
