Ordered:
MMW Marvel-Two-In-One V4
Berserk HC V1

This is my first time buying/reading some manga. Not sure if I will like it, LOL.

Hey, progress! Why just the other day I skimmed a free DC comic that came packaged with my HoX/PoX issues. No idea what was going on, but I was proud of myself! Haha

Berserk is super popular. I like it, but at the same time I wouldn't recommend it to everyone. One of my brothers likes it a lot and the other definitely does not. There is a lot of very different manga out there. I hope you like this but if not, I certainly wouldn't write off the genre.

Eric, have you tried Samurai Executioner? If I have to pick a favorite manga, this might be it. I'm sure a key factor is the legal connection.

Nickviola | 1019 comments If you are willing to try some Japanese comics I highly recommend 20th century boys - the paperback editions (perfect) are nice and cheap. Great story, great characters, huge mystery - through 4 volumes and haven’t had the reveal but some fun hours reading it.

I'm holding off checking out 20th Century Boys but it's on my list. I'm probably going to try to finish getting caught up on Vinland Saga. I ordered the first hardcover of Fullmetal Alchemist to sample the series. I have a friend that has been watching both versions of the show (haven't tried) and he's a big fan so I told him I would check out the book.

I've actually been watching some anime lately. Almost finished with Neon Genesis Evangelion and have enjoyed it. Fullmetal Alchemist and Berserk are on my list to watch too.

Evangelion: do you stream it, and if so what platform? I used to watch all kinds of giant robot shows when I was a kid like Robotech/Macross and Gundam...wanted to get into Evangelion but fell off my radar as I got older. I’ve heard great things, though, so I could see myself trying again.

I'm streaming it on Netflix. It's surprisingly dark, focusing on a couple kids and their messed up backgrounds. Gets better toward the end. I'm watching the dubbed version vs. subtitles.

Robotech I watched some when I was young but never got to watch all of it. It is on both Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. Tried watching it again, determined to finish it, but have only made it halfway through. For each episode, half of the story I really like and the other half I despise, so it's been hard to continue.

Might have to reactivate my Netflix account...

Oh man, Robotech was huge to me for so long. I’ve still got floppy disks with like a 20-page timeline of the whole series that I found in the early days of the internet and was terrified of losing. There’s also a 20+ novelization of the anime that I pieced together from early amazon purchases. I even spent hundreds on the special edition DVDs that came out in the early 2000s...worth about $50 now, but I’ll never part with them. Just a little obsessed with that show...haha. It was groundbreaking to me compared to other cartoons at the time, I mean main characters died, and it’ll always have a special place in my heart.

Give Macross Plus a try if you you ever get a chance. Watanabe’s directorial debut (same director of Cowboy Bebop). The miniseries is best, but the movie version has an extended death scene for a character that was simply incredible.

I agree that Robotech was groundbreaking at the time. I didn't have access to the show at the time so never got to really watch it. Still plan to finish it at some point, just have a hard time watching all the Minmay stories, LOL. I love the robots/mechs of course, but I also think the tactical battle stuff was brilliant.

Do you think I could watch Macross Plus without finishing the original series?

Cowboy Bepop is also on my list to watch. Been told that is very good.

Honestly, Macross Plus could’ve been titled something completely different and I don’t think anyone would’ve noticed. I think there’s a brief plot point involving the old SDF-1 ship, but more like an Easter egg/fan service than anything else. Fun bonus fact: Bryan Cranston did voice work in the US dubbed version.

As for Cowboy Bebop, I feel like a fossil whenever I say this, especially around younger anime fans, but to me it’s the gold standard for nearly all anime since its creation, including the movie they made after the series that fits in before the last few episodes. Animation, themes, plots, voice acting, and the music....good god the music makes the series timeless in my opinion.

Oh man! Focus on work and family for a few days and I miss out on some great conversation!

Manga . . . Watched Anime for years, but only got into Manga in the past year or two. There is so much good to be found. Given all the comments, apologies if I don’t address you specifically, other than Rel who asked a straight question.

Real, no I haven’t read any of that . . . But legal world . . . You know I’m in! I’ll order some tomorrow on IST.

For suggestions, these have already been made, but high recommendations for me are 20th Century Boys and Vinland Saga in that order. Anyone looking to start Manga, GET 20th CENTURY BOYS!! I ordered all the Vinland Saga HC about 2 months ago and blew through Books 1-4 (maybe 5 too have to look). I took a pause because that last book was is a major arc ending and a I think a huge jump follows. I did some mediocre reviews of these on Goodreads if anyone is curious about these series; no spoilers and more so for me to go back into notes if I need a refresher.

I haven’t read Fullmetal Alchemist yet, but have been buying all the recent HC Fullmetal editions. This is because I did watch Fullmetal Alchemist about 8+ years ago and it’s probably my second favorite Anime Series; Cowboy Bebop is hands down the best for me.

Cowboy is a great place for adults to start watching Anime IMO other than the fact that it sets the bar so high that it may be hard to find another series you love. The other plus (but really a negative), the series is so short, it takes almost no time commitment, total clock time minus the movie has got to be under 6 hours (I know some of you put that kinda time into Netflix in a weekend)

Fullmetal takes 2nd as the mythology that world builds is very awesome; love the Humonculous!!!

If anyone wants to watch Fullmetal, Cowboy Bebop or Robotec., I’ll sell my box sets super cheap. Converted Fullmetal and Cowboy to digital a year ago and Robotech is a one and done for me.

Robotech: I totally understand why people love this show, but I watched it for the first time in my late 20’s early 30’s. I generally loved the first Saga, but was definitely losing interest by the last.

Other Anime, Vinland Saga season 1 is on Amazon Prime. I gave it a shot, but Manga and Anime to me are so similar that just having read those first few books . . . I wasn’t super into it. I bet watching it later not so close to the read and I’ll love it. It’s also subtitle only. When it comes to live action, I have to issue with subtitles, but for some reason I’m not as into Anime without English Dub; there is a website offering English dub episodes.

On a final note, hoping someone can help me as I asked this months ago. Dragon Ball and DBZ, has anyone read the Manga? I watched all that stuff about 20 years ago and loved it then, but not sure I’d be into it now (remember it getting more silly towards the end). Anyone recommend this series in light of already watching the show? If the stories are exactly the same, I don’t see the point.

Thanks for the thoughts Eric. :) You may need to check Amazon for the Samurai Executioner Omnibus editions. It looks like only volume four is still available on IST (there are four TPB omnibus editions).

I just finished the first Fullmetal Alchemist HC book last night. Interesting world but isn't grabbing me as fast as a few other things I've sampled. I'm in for another volume though. :)

Anyone read the Mobile Suit Gundam books? It looks like there are some nice hardcovers for the material but haven't heard anyone mention the series before. Book One: https://www.instocktrades.com/TP/Vert...

Batman reading question. We're into near mid 2020 with solicitations for DC and no Dark Nights Metal omnibus yet. I'm interesting in reading the event. I want to read it somewhat in order. Is this the right hardcover order?:

Dark Days the Road the Metal HC
Dark Nights Metal Dark Nights Rising HC
Dark Nights Metal Deluxe Ed HC
The Batman Who Laughs HC (coming next week on IST)

There is also a Metal The Resistance but it's tie-in one shots from various series and only available in TPB.

I'm pretty sure I read them in that order, but this link has the original checklist from DC. It's the usual thing, you can read them chronologically or read the main story collected and go back to read the other stuff and mentally "fill in the gaps".

Finally a big week for omnibus lovers and some other great titles too.

That being said, with the past couple slow months I’m finding my self thinking twice about some pick ups.

Byrne Spider-Man . . . I’ve been collecting all the spiderman Omnibus but for some reason this just seems like a toss in. Can anyone correct me if I’m wrong?

Timely Submariner . . . I was dead set, but at $75 am I really going to read and truly enjoy or is this just evidence of relics from the golden age that we should pay repeats to?

Horror Omnibus . . . Same concerns as above and I already have the werewolf by night Omnibus. O my thing that makes me really want it is the run of Zombie . . . But only 10 issues in the whole Omnibus. Then throwing in Hulk and FF into this Omnibus, doesn’t seem as horror filled as I’d like.

Thoughts?

message 5227: by Blindzider, Moderator (new)

Blindzider | 3293 comments Mod
I decided against the Byrne Spider-Man as well. I just don't really like books dedicated to one creator. I prefer sequential runs or limited series.

I've read the first few Namor MMWs and didn't like them enough to justify the purchase.

If you are on the fence, I say don't spend the money (unless you can afford it). If you only buy what you really want there won't be any regrets or guilt afterwards.

message 5228: by Erik, Moderator (new)

Eastham Erik (erikakasash501) | 851 comments Mod
Agreed Blind. Only what you want, and what I want is sequential story telling. That is what is holding me back with the spiderman Omnibus

message 5229: by Nickviola (new)

Nickviola | 1019 comments Agree about Spider-Man and I love Byrne, but I prefer numbered volumes coming out sequentially.

As for Sub-Mariner, I like the old creators and find myself “flipping through” old Kirby or Simonson work more often than “rereading” even my favorite modern stories so excited to have Everett’s art and for me ends up being a nice value. Totally get how it can be a waste for others though.

Received the Akira box set from Amazon yesterday. It looks like the company has it double boxed and Amazon put in a third box (with a tiny bit of packing paper to let you know they thought about packing the package well, but didn't want to really put much effort into it). Happy to say it arrived without any damage.

First volume read, certainly interesting enough to keep my interest and I'm looking forward to getting back into it tonight.

Not sure I love the clamshell design of the box set as the top if a bit hard to open. Perhaps it's just stiff because it's new so we'll see how it goes moving forward.

Started seeing that issue last winter with Amazon after they shipped me a new hard drive with absolutely no other packing materials in their box, just the product in its packaging in a box 2-3X too large. And still steamed at them for shipping my Avengers slipcase in such minimal packaging this past spring that the case of the set was quite thoroughly cracked along a corner (although shame on Marvel for minimizing their packaging as well).

Congrats on the new Bookshelf BZ. :)

I'm planning on getting the Batman Eternal omnibus. I read all of the rest of Snyder's run as it came out in standard size HC and this portion wasn't available in that format. Snyder's Batman run will also be getting omnibus editions like Morrison's and I assume this will be needed to complete the run....

I also ordered the Batman Damned hardcover. Didn't pick up Batman who laughs yet but I ordered the first two Metal standard HCs and then I'll order Metal and Batman who laughs. Once I do we'll likely see an omnibus solicited with all the material in proper order. :p

I think I've read the content in I Hate Fairyland DLX 2 but will order to add to the library at some point. IST usually only picks 5 books to be 50% at release so not everything I want may be at half off.

No word yet. Disappointed we haven't seen anything as I liked Lemire's run. While we did get a Moon Knight Lemire OHC, not a lot of his other Marvel work has the oversize treatment.

We're also missing a solicit for an Old Man Hawkeye. 12 issues seems like a perfect size for an OHC.

I know some will say blasphemy, but I think Transmetropolitan is overrated. I completely understand how it was perceived as new and edgy when it came out, but so much of Ellis’s writing in that series seems to be only for “shock factor.”

The DCBS version of v2 disappeared pretty quickly, never to be seen again, so I took no chances and snatched up volume 2 quickly, LOL. The two will look quite nice together, although I’m admittedly tempted to pick up the standard edition as well, since I bought the standard edition of volume 1 as well. The pink and green would look quite nice together...

I think these are the only hardcovers I’ve ever double dipped on. Not sure why, so just think they’re pretty.
