July Monthly - Camping
Duration: July 1-31, 2019

Levels:

Level One: 1-5 tasks
Level Two: 6+ tasks

Tasks:
The history of recreational camping is often traced back to Thomas Hiram Holding, a British travelling tailor, but it was actually first popularized in the UK on the river Thames.
🏕️ 1. Read a book by an author whose first name begins with T.
🏕️ 2. Read a book by an author whose last name begins with H.
🏕️ 3. Read a book whose title begins with a letter in THAMES.
🏕️ 4. Read a book set near a river. Tell us the name of the river.

By the 1880s large numbers of visitors took part in the pastime, which was connected to the late Victorian craze for pleasure boating. The early camping equipment was very heavy, so it was convenient to transport it by boat or to use craft that converted into tents.
🏕️ 5. Read a book set after 1880.
🏕️ 6. Read a book where a character goes pleasure boating.
🏕️ 7. Read a book where an item is transported by boat.
🏕️ 8. Read a book with a tent on the cover. Please show us the cover.
🏕️ 9. Read a book with any camping gear or supplies on the cover. Please show us the cover.

Although Thomas Hiram Holding is often seen as the father of modern camping in the UK, he was responsible for popularising a different type of camping in the early twentieth century. He experienced the activity in the wild from his youth, when he had spent much time with his parents traveling across the American prairies.
🏕️ 10. Read a book set in the UK.
🏕️ 11. Read a book set in the US.
🏕️ 12. Read a YA book.
🏕️ 13. Read a book where a child travels with his/her parents.

Later he embarked on a cycling and camping tour with some friends across Ireland. His book on his Ireland experience, Cycle and Camp in Connemara led to the formation of the first camping group in 1901, the Association of Cycle Campers, later to become the Camping and Caravanning Club. He wrote The Campers Handbook in 1908, so that he could share his enthusiasm for the great outdoors with the world.
🏕️ 14. Read a book where a character rides a bicycle.
🏕️ 15. Read a book set in Ireland.
🏕️ 16. Read a book where a character is an author.
🏕️ 17. Read a book set in a year that contains TWO of these numbers: 0, 1, 8 or 9.
🏕️ 18. Read a book with a page count that contains ONE of these numbers: 0, 1, 8 or 9.
🏕️ 19. Read a book where a character loves the outdoors.

Possibly the first commercial camping ground in the world was Cunningham’s camp, near Douglas, Isle of Man, which opened in 1894. In 1906 the Association of Cycle Campers opened its first own camping site, in Weybridge. By that time the organization had several hundred members. In 1910 the Association was merged into the National Camping Club. Although WW1 was responsible for a certain hiatus in camping activity, the association received a new lease of life after the war when Sir Robert Baden-Powell (founder of the Boy Scouts movement) became its president.
🏕️ 20. Read a book where a character goes camping at an organized camping site.
🏕️ 21. Read a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in NATIONAL CAMPING CLUB. (Three word minimum)
🏕️ 22. Read a book where a character has a title (Sir, Doctor, etc.).
🏕️ 23. Read a book where a character is the president of something. Tell us what the job/organization is.

In the US, camping may be traced to William Henry Harrison Murray 1869 publication of Camp-Life in the Adirondacks resulting in a flood of visitors to the Adirondacks that summer.
The International Federation of Camping Clubs (Federation Internationale de Camping et de Caravanning) was founded in 1932 with national clubs from all over the world affiliating with it. By the 1960s camping had become an established family holiday standard and today camp sites are ubiquitous across Europe and North America.

🏕️ 24. Read a book by an author whose first or last name is William, Henry, Harrison or Murray
🏕️ 25. Read a book where a character goes to camp in the summer.
🏕️ 26. Read a book where a character goes to the mountains for recreation. (Bonus Badge: The mountains visited are the Adirondacks in New York State.)
🏕️ 27. Read a book set in the 1960s.
🏕️ 28. Read a book where a family goes on vacation. Tell us where they vacation.
🏕️ 29. Read a book with the word CAMP or LIFE in the title.
🏕️ 30. Read a book from a list that contains a "CAMP" or "OUTDOORS" word in the list's name. Tell us the list's name and the book's number on the list.
Examples:
Books for Hikers
Get Outside
Nature Lover-Romances With Camping, Fishing, Hiking, Backpacking, Mountain Climbing And More
Summer Camp Teens

The International Federation of Camping Clubs (Federation Internationale de Camping et de Caravanning) was founded in 1932 with national clubs from all over the world affiliating with it. READ: 12/10

The history of recreational camping is often traced back to Thomas Hiram Holding, a British travelling tailor, but it was actually first popularized in the UK on the river Thames.
✔ 🏕️ 1. Read a book by an author whose first name begins with T.
Operation: Endgame - Pip Ballantine / Tee Morris 7/13
✔ 🏕️ 2. Read a book by an author whose last name begins with H.
Chaos Bites - Lori Handeland 7/7
✔ 🏕️ 3. Read a book whose title begins with a letter in THAMES.
The Trouble With Vampires - Lynsay Sands 7/4

By the 1880s large numbers of visitors took part in the pastime, which was connected to the late Victorian craze for pleasure boating. The early camping equipment was very heavy, so it was convenient to transport it by boat or to use craft that converted into tents.
✔ 🏕️ 5. Read a book set after 1880.
The Highland Dragon's Lady - Isabel Cooper (1895) 7/12
✔ 🏕️ 6. Read a book where a character goes pleasure boating.
Darkest Flame - Donna Grant 7/19
✔ 🏕️ 7. Read a book where an item is transported by boat.
Trojan Odyssey - Clive Cussler (underwater habitat is towed by boat) 7/28

Although Thomas Hiram Holding is often seen as the father of modern camping in the UK, he was responsible for popularising a different type of camping in the early twentieth century. He experienced the activity in the wild from his youth, when he had spent much time with his parents traveling across the American prairies.
✔ 🏕️ 10. Read a book set in the UK.
Aunt Dimity and the Village Witch - Nancy Atherton 7/21
✔ 🏕️ 11. Read a book set in the US.
Dragon Bites - Allison James (Nevada) 7/2
✔ 🏕️ 12. Read a YA book.
The Chaos of Stars - Kiersten White 7/9

Later he embarked on a cycling and camping tour with some friends across Ireland. His book on his Ireland experience, Cycle and Camp in Connemara led to the formation of the first camping group in 1901, the Association of Cycle Campers, later to become the Camping and Caravanning Club. He wrote The Campers Handbook in 1908, so that he could share his enthusiasm for the great outdoors with the world.
✔ 🏕️ 17. Read a book set in a year that contains TWO of these numbers: 0, 1, 8 or 9.
Daughter of Fortune - Isabel Allende (set in 1849) 7/31
✔ 🏕️ 18. Read a book with a page count that contains ONE of these numbers: 0, 1, 8 or 9.

Although Thomas Hiram Holding is often seen as the father of modern camping in the UK, he was responsible for popularising a different type of camping in the early twentieth century. He experienced the activity in the wild from his youth, when he had spent much time with his parents traveling across the American prairies.

July Monthly - Camping
Duration: July 1-31, 2019

Level Two: 6+ tasks

Read: 6/6

Eikä yksikään pelastunut - Agatha Christie- 5.7.2019

🏕️ 4. Read a book set near a river. Tell us the name of the river.
Parfyymi: Erään murhaajan tarina - Patrick Süskind - 7.7.2019
River Seine

By the 1880s large numbers of visitors took part in the pastime, which was connected to the late Victorian craze for pleasure boating. The early camping equipment was very heavy, so it was convenient to transport it by boat or to use craft that converted into tents.

🏕️ 5. Read a book set after 1880.
Ilon ja onnen tarinat - Amy Tan - 1.7.2019

Var är Jane Eyre? - Jasper Fforde - 6.7.2019

🏕️ 11. Read a book set in the US.

🏕️ 12. Read a YA book.
Dorothy Must Die - Danielle Paige - 4.7.2019

Fairest - Marissa Meyer - 6.7.2019
Queen Levana
