This topic has been frozen by the moderator. No new comments can be posted.
The entire Around the Year challenge list is generated by the group members. We enjoyed the process so much in the past four years that we are creating another list for 2020.
The process will start on 1 June and we aim to have a completed list by sometime in October or November. Everyone is very welcome to participate, whether this is your first or fifth year.
How it will work:
The topics will be chosen through a series of mini-polls. For each mini-poll there will be a suggestion thread where you can propose a topic. A suggestion needs to be seconded by one other person before it’s included in the poll. Once 15-20 suggestions have been seconded the thread will close for new suggestions. There will be a break of around 24 hours between the suggestions thread closing and the poll opening for voting. This is to allow people to discuss the options before voting opens.
The mods will create a poll for members to choose their favourite suggestions. Each member has eight votes, which you can use to vote for your “top” and/or “bottom” choices. (See below for an example.) Polls normally stay open for one week, and the mods will announce the results shortly after. The number of winning suggestions from each poll may vary depending on the distribution of votes.
Then a new suggestion thread will open and we’ll repeat the process until we have chosen 51 topics for the 2020 list (one topic will be selected by the person who wins the summer reading challenge draw).
How to participate:
* Follow this thread as the mods will post here when new suggestion threads are opened, when mini-polls start, and when the results of a mini-poll are available.
* If you want to suggest a topic you can do so whenever a new suggestion thread opens. You don’t have to suggest a topic in order to participate in the poll.
* When a new poll is posted follow the link to the survey site and vote for your favourite and/or least favourite prompts.
* Look out for the results and the opening of a new suggestion thread.
* The topics chosen for the 2020 list will be posted in this thread and the topics that were suggested but not chosen will be posted here.
Rules
- The mods may add additional rules as necessary, therefore please always read the rules in each suggestion thread before participating.
- Each person may only suggest or second one topic per poll.
- The number of suggestions included in each poll may vary and will be stated in each suggestion thread.
- If a suggestion has been included in three polls and has not been selected then it may not be submitted again.
- Each person may only vote once in each poll. The survey site allows us to identify people who vote multiple times and duplicate votes will be excluded.
- Please be respectful of other people when participating in discussion. Let’s remember that we’re doing the challenge differently and for different reasons, so avoid judging others’ choices or suggestions.
Multi-week suggestions
Later in the process there will be an opportunity to suggest multi-week prompts. Multi-week suggestions may only be submitted in this poll. The poll will also include the option of voting against including any multi-week prompts.
Default prompts
This year we have chosen not to include any default prompts (in previous years these included a book published in the year the challenge took place and a book from the Goodreads Choice Awards). You’re welcome to suggest a topic that’s previously been included by default and it will be voted on in a mini-poll like any other suggestion.
Voting examples
You have eight votes in total which you can use to vote for your top and bottom choices. You can use less than eight votes if you wish.
For example:
Voter one
Top: Suggestions 1, 4, 7, 9
Bottom: Suggestions 2, 10, 11, 12
