Katie | 2360 comments I’m rather sad to announce that we only have a few results for the 10th mini poll.

Top:
- A book about a non-traditional family (eg. grandparents raising grandkids, LGBTQ+)

Bottom:
- A book by an author with a colour in their name, where that colour also appears on the cover

Polarizing:
- A western

Results are calculated by subtracting the number of voters who put a prompt in their bottom from those who put a prompt in their top (top - bottom). The totals are then compared to find the top result(s).

The next round of suggestions will open tomorrow, Thursday, August 22 at 6:30pm EDT.

message 3: by °~Amy~° (new)

°~Amy~° (amybooksit) Um. OK? I voted for that one so that is something I guess.

message 4: by Avery (new)

Avery (averyapproved) | 475 comments What the heck, that is deflating! Let’s get some unique and exciting suggestions tomorrow!

message 5: by Nadine in NY (new)

Nadine in NY Jones | 2287 comments Do you think we should go back to only 15 suggestions? Maybe our votes are just getting too spread out to generate results.

Oof. My guess is that all of the cover prompts split the vote between cover prompts, which is why we ended up with none?

I am totally okay with the prompt that won, and I'm good with the bottom one... I do wish western was in the bottom lol.

Hooray for a new round tomorrow! Can't wait to see what get's suggested.

The spreadsheet is updated

message 7: by Jill (new)

Jill (dogbotsmum) | 1356 comments Yes I was thinking the votes are being too diluted because of the spread

I just created a listopia for the nontraditional family prompt, if anyone wants to add to it: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1...

message 9: by Rachel (new)

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 3287 comments I'm happy that the non-traditional family prompt got in since that was one of my top picks, but it's disappointing to get only one winner. I was surprised that none of the cover prompts got in or were even close calls.

Raquel (Silver Valkyrie Reads) That is rather anti-climactic... I'm reasonably happy with the prompt that won, but just one winner is a bit sad.

message 11: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2954 comments It is a bit disappointing to only have one winner. All three were in my top.

message 12: by Charity (new)

Charity (faeryrebel78) | 552 comments Where’s the other 3?

message 13: by Hannah (new)

Hannah | 384 comments I’m really happy with the prompt that won, but there were so many other prompts I liked this round that I wanted more winners.

I do wonder if one of the reasons only a couple of prompts get through each week is that our votes are spread thinly with 20 suggestions, so I would like to have 15 suggestions for each poll and see if that would make a difference.

I agree. I'd like to see if limiting to 15 prompts would help get more prompts selected.

dalex (912dalex) | 2641 comments Seriously? :/

message 16: by Jill (new)

Jill (dogbotsmum) | 1356 comments It would seem that our concern at having few cover prompts was not felt by many.

message 17: by Chrissy (new)

Chrissy | 1142 comments I agree that 20 is too many to choose from.

message 18: by Katie (new)

Katie | 2360 comments I think it's exactly what Emily said that the large number of cover prompts split the vote up.

message 19: by Katie (new)

Katie | 2360 comments I set up a poll for the number of suggestions for the next mini poll. We'll go with whatever is winning at the time to open the suggestion thread tomorrow.

message 20: by Eujean2 (new)

Eujean2 | 77 comments If we have less prompts will we have less votes?
8 seems like a lot of votes for only 10 prompts.

message 21: by Chrissy (new)

Chrissy | 1142 comments Yeah - if there are 10 prompts, I think 6 votes would make sense.

message 22: by Sesia (new)

Sesia | 29 comments Blarg!

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11295 comments Mod
I think 8 votes total is fine, no matter how many options we have. People will use them as they like, whether it's upvotes or downvotes. I think it worked having a smaller number of votes for the multi-week poll because we knew we wouldn't have more than 1 or 2 get in, but I personally wouldn't care if 8 of the 10 options made it in next week, if that's what the people voted for.

Can we get an announcement for this poll? If you don't read all of this discussion, you will miss it.

Katie posted it on the Announcement's thread.

Weird I am supposed to get notifications from the announcements thread but I didn't this time around. :(

message 27: by Chinook (new)

Chinook | 639 comments Well. That’s one heck of a result.

message 28: by Angie (new)

Angie | 136 comments Ugh. Depressing and demotivating results. Still no genre or cover prompts? Sadly, the winner was one of my bottom votes, so I'm not remotely excited.

message 29: by Sara (new)

Sara (phantomswife) | 0 comments I wonder why the votes are not netting any winners. So many people were excited about these prompts and to come away with only one is depressing indeed.

message 30: by Jette (new)

Jette | 343 comments I’m disappointed about the western prompt...as well as only having one winner. I was finally going to work Lonesome Dove into a challenge.

message 31: by Angie (new)

Angie | 136 comments I just want a balanced list. I feel like I vote, and it doesn't matter.

message 32: by Sara (new)

Sara (phantomswife) | 0 comments I'm disappointed about the western as well, Jette. It isn't a genre I read, so I felt it would be a good way to challenge myself and yet find something I would love.

Angie, I know what you mean, but perhaps it will all work out in the end.

message 33: by Pam (new)

Pam (bluegrasspam) | 3885 comments I’m not surprised. People seemed to be all over the place. I didn’t vote for the winner but am ok with it. I was really hoping for the Western prompt but maybe one of the books I want to read for that prompt will fit into the prompt that won.

message 34: by Pam (last edited Aug 22, 2019 06:50AM) (new)

Pam (bluegrasspam) | 3885 comments Jette- Having Read Lonesome Dove, I think you could include it for the non-traditional family prompt. The family for the boy Newt is Gus and Call and the rest of the cowboys on the cattle drive!

message 35: by Bec (new)

Bec | 1342 comments Ahhh that is disappointing.

I voted for the winner - so say. The bottom was in my bottom - so yay. Polarizing was in my bottom.
But only 1 winner, sad.

message 36: by Charity (new)

Charity (faeryrebel78) | 552 comments We’ve pretty much always had 20 suggestions for each vote with a few exceptions. I’m wondering if the way the votes can be placed anywhere instead of 4 and 4 is causing us to have less top choices this go around.

message 37: by Lizzy (new)

Lizzy | 911 comments I’m wondering if we should go back to the 4 up and 4 down votes? Did we get more winners that way?

message 38: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 2999 comments Well that is deflating. I didn't have strong feelings either way about most the prompts, apart from I would have liked some genre ones.

message 39: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (sawphie) | 2826 comments We did get quite a lot of winners in other polls with 20 suggestions and 8 votes to spread out, because some prompts stood out for a lot of people. I agree that this time around the number of cover prompts did split the vote, so we'll see how things go for the next poll with 15 suggestions (the poll results are pretty clear-cut).

message 40: by Silvia (new)

Silvia Turcios | 1058 comments A western should be a top just because all the times it has been postulated lol I actually would like to have it finally on the list.

message 42: by Katie (new)

Katie | 2360 comments New poll for if you want to keep the voting the same or go back to top and bottom 4.

Poll will close when the voting thread is posted for the 11th mini poll.

message 43: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Sterling | 452 comments Well, that's crummy. I did vote for the winning prompt, so I'm very happy about that, but so disappointed with it being the only one. This was the first time I had 8 up-votes and no down-votes, because I was so excited about so many of the prompts. I actually had to narrow it down to 8 from 14 originally.

Hopefully changing the number of prompts will help!

message 44: by Anastasia (new)

Anastasia (anastasiaharris) | 1731 comments Sometimes I am not using all of my votes. Do other people use all of their votes every time?

message 45: by viemag (new)

viemag | 180 comments Anastasia wrote: "Sometimes I am not using all of my votes. Do other people use all of their votes every time?"

Anastasia: I always use all of my votes.

message 46: by viemag (new)

viemag | 180 comments I was a little surprised to just see one winner, but those are the results. I think we should just keep on going and not worry too much about figuring out how to skew the voting results. We are halfway to 52 prompts so hopefully everything will work out.

Exactly what I'm thinking, but people are panicking after one disappointing results lol

message 49: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2954 comments I think maybe we only had one winner because there were so many good prompts this week. When just a few prompts stand out it is easier to pick a winner. Even though I was only able to upvote 7 there were several more I’d like to have voted for.

As to using all my votes, this year I have. Last year, when we had to vote 4/4 I did not always use all my down votes.

Also, I think it is pretty normal for us to be making some changes right now. Last year we also switched mid way from 20-15 prompts (I think this should be the default rather than 20). We also shortened the voting period. Additionally, we had to add the 24 hour rule for participating on the suggestion poll (thankfully that change does not seem needed this year).

message 50: by °~Amy~° (new)

°~Amy~° (amybooksit) I think the biggest issue was that most of the prompts were for cover prompts so people who wanted covers were cancelling each other out because some people wanted this type of cover and some people wanted that type of cover. And then a big group of us didn't want covers at all so we used all our downvotes that we had against all the cover prompts. I really think we do better when we have a good variety of prompts in every minipoll.
