It's time for another round, everyone!

But first, a little reminder of how things are done around here (head to this thread for all the nitty-gritty details):

How it works:
- The topics for the 2020 reading challenge list will be determined by a series of mini-polls, the number of which depends on the number of prompts winning in each mini-polls
- Suggestions for each poll will be opened until 15-20 suggestions are received and “seconded” (this number can change, which will be announced in each suggestion topic)
- We'll wait for one day between the end of the suggestions and the start of the poll to allow for research and discussions
- The poll will be opened for voting for 5 days

Rules:
- This is a multi-week only poll.
* A multi-week prompt is a set of prompts (2 or 3 or 4 prompts total) that are connected in some way -- much like the 4 wedding rhyme prompts this year or the 2 prompts connected by genre, subject, etc.
- Rules for voting will be posted in the voting thread, so stay tuned for all those details
- Each suggestion should be limited to 4 weeks total

- Each member can only suggest OR second one prompt
- Suggestions close after 20 total seconded prompts
- If the categories are not balanced enough at some point, the mods will add rules to encourage variety
- For now, we won't limit polls to new suggestion only, but that can be considered in the future
- For now, members who have suggested or seconded a prompt don't need to wait for 24 hours before doing so again in the next poll. That may change in the future if members express a need for this rule to be reinstated

As always, please express any and all feedback (respectfully, of course), either here or in The Wild Discussion

Poll Entries:
1. Three books linked by the saying "Beauty, Brains, Brawn”
2. To celebrate PRIDE, three “own voices” books, from any marginalized group, inspired by the colors of the rainbow (e.g. cover, title, author name, country flag, etc.)
3. Three books with authors or characters in three different generations
4. Two books that are related to each other as a pair of binary opposites (e.g. hot/cold, top/bottom, high/low, etc.)
5. Two books from different genres that are connected in some way (e.g. author, subject matter/topic, topic, publish year, own voices, award, etc.)
6. Three books related to any three of the five senses (sight, sound, taste, touch, smell)
7. Two books: A memoir, biography, or novelization of the life of an author and a book by that author
8. Four books related to each of the four seasons (e.g. title, cover art, story, etc.)
9. Three books in the same genre from different countries
10. Three books with main characters with, or themes about, three identities you aren’t intimately familiar with: a different race, gender orientation or sexuality, belief about religion, socioeconomic status, or physical (dis)ability

18. Three books related to the primary colors [red, yellow and blue] (e.g title, cover color, associated mood/behavior - anger, sadness, cowardice, etc.)
19. A fiction and non-fiction book about the same topic

Available to be seconded:

To celebrate PRIDE, three “own voices” books inspired by the colors of the rainbow

That could be cover color, words in the title, author name, country’s flag, etc.

I’ve done the Cover Colors Challenge the last few years and I’ve found it really fun. That just requires a book for each color so I think it would be exciting to add an extra element to the challenge by making it an “own voices” book.

Definition of “own voices” - Authors that share a diverse, minority, or marginalized trait with their protagonist (I.e. gender, sexual orientation, race, mental health, etc.)

message 4: by Avery (new)

Avery (averyapproved) | 475 comments 3 books linked by the saying "Beauty, Brains, Brawn”

There are a lot of interpretations and different ways to link (or not link) them, but here's some examples I came up with:

Beauty: a book by an artist or celebrity, a book related to art, a book about inner beauty, a book with illustrations, a book with a beautiful cover, a book related to Sleeping Beauty or Beauty and the Beast, a book with a character you find attractive

Brains: a book by a scientist or doctor, a book related to education, a book related to zombies, a required reading for school or class, a book that will teach you something, a puzzle book

Brawn: a book by an athlete, a book related to sports, a book about inner strength, a physically large book, a book with a hefty page count

message 5: by °~Amy~° (new)

°~Amy~° (amybooksit) 3 books with authors or characters in three different generations

Author ideas:
I intended this to be for 3 different authors but you could use a single author at different ages, for instance Stephen King released Carrie when he was 27, The Stand when he was 43 and The Outsider at 71.

Examples of debut books written by authors in their 20's
Authors who gained fame after 40
8 writers over 80
books by authors over 65

Character Ideas:
adult fiction with a child protagonist
"best" characters in their 20's
midlife crisis books
protagonists over 60

message 11: by Peter (new)

Peter | -28 comments Three books, each related to a different stage of life.

Examples that could work: birth, prime of life, death, youth, coming of age, adulthood, old age, first job, new job, retirement, single, getting married, starting a family, first time moving away from home, moving back home, debut book, book released in the peak of the author's career, last book written before the author died.

*note I don't mean that the stages have to be strictly related to each other. They can be, but I just mean 3 different stages. For example it doesn't have to be youth, adulthood, old age... it could be new career, last book published by an author, getting their first pet. the promot kind of lends itself to a progression of sorts but doesn't need to be; mix and match whatever stages of life people are interested in.

I loved the five senses prompt when it was suggested as a single week and thought it would make a great multi week. I'm also open to making it 4 or even all 5 senses but I know not everyone wants so many weeks covered.

I’m confused by this. I assumed this was specifically glbtq because of “pride” and “rainbow.” But in the explanation it says, “Authors that share a diverse, minority, or marginalized trait with their protagonist.”

Does this maybe need to be reworded for the voting poll? Or am I the only one who thinks it’s confusing?
