Katie | 2360 comments The results of our ninth mini-poll are in!

Top 2:
- A book about an event or era in history taken from the Billy Joel song "We didn't Start the Fire"
- A book by an author on the Abe List of 100 Essential Female Writers

Bottom:
- A book about or inspired by The Beatles
- A mashup genre book

Close Calls:
- A book written by an author who passed away in the last five years
- A book related to Earth Day
- A book published in 2020

Results are calculated by subtracting the number of voters who put a prompt in their bottom from those who put a prompt in their top (top - bottom). The totals are then compared to find the top result(s).

Regarding multi week prompts: The group has voted to allow multi-week prompts in future polls. The Beauty, Brains & Brawn prompt will not be added to the list, but may be resubmitted like any other previously submitted prompt (except those that were in the bottom on a poll).

The next round of suggestions will open tomorrow, Thursday, August 15 at 9:00am EDT.

Spreadsheet is updated!

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 2999 comments Yay, I voted for both the winners and I'm going to have a great time picking out far too many books for We Didn't Start the Fire.

I voted for two of the close calls but downvoted the other.

message 4: by Steve (new)

Steve | 615 comments I almost want to twist the We Didn't Start the Fire to "Ryan Started the Fire" from The Office and read one of BJ Novak's books! That being said, I love that song and can't wait to find something related to it.

message 5: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 59 comments Well that’s interesting. I upvoted the top 2 but I also upvoted the bottom 2 and 1 of the close calls.

message 6: by Nadine in NY (new)

Nadine in NY Jones | 2287 comments I voted NO for a winner and YES for a loser, so I’m really batting 1000 this year.

message 7: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2954 comments I voted for the top 2. All my other top and bottom votes ended up lost in the middle.

message 8: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2954 comments Is the multi-poll results also going to be posted?

message 9: by dalex (new)

dalex (912dalex) | 2641 comments If anyone was really hoping the Beatles prompt would go through, you can still use whatever you had planned for that for the Billy Joel prompt (#86 British Beatlemania).

I'm tempted to do a whole side challenge of just books relating to the Billy Joel prompt. So many options!

message 10: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Sterling | 452 comments Well, I am happy with the winners, as I up-voted both of them. I am disappointed that we didn't get more winners this week, though. I had 7 up-votes, and actually quite a few more I wanted to vote for, as well.

My one down-vote isn't anywhere in the results, so I'm hoping it doesn't come up again in the future. Oh, well. Off to round 10!

message 11: by Ira (new)

Ira | 361 comments Even though I had 7 upvotes, I voted for none of the winners. I dare say I will find something interesting for them, but I doubt the books I find will be on my already too big TBR, that I try to narrow down. That is the reason I didn't vote for them in the first place. I hope my local library have some good options for me...

If you're asking about the main results, they were posted here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

If you're talking about the other poll we set up regarding the future of multi-prompts (here), we're going to mention it in the next suggestion thread.

message 13: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2954 comments Sophie, I can see where my question was confusing. I was asking in regards to the future multi-prompts poll. It seems like there is a clear winner so I was seeing when the results would be posted too.

If you click on the link to the multiprompt poll, you can see the most currently standings. Unless a lot of people reconsider their votes, we will be having more multi-prompts in future polls. :(

Amy, I agree about being able to view the poll but the multi-week has been so confusing to begin with that I just wanted to know when results would be posted for everyone.

message 16: by °~Amy~° (new)

°~Amy~° (amybooksit) The KIS/BIO list has been updated

Voting wise I was all over the place this week. Of my three upvotes, one ended up in the top (ABE), one ended up in the bottom (Beatles) and one was a close-call (Earth Day).

Of my 5 downvotes, one was a top and none of the others showed up anywhere on the final list.

Looking forward to the next suggestion round

I was thinking that exact same thing!!

Nadine in NY Jones | 2287 comments I think this was the Abe list:

I've added the link to the Abe list onto the planning tab of the spreadsheet as well.

I'm really excited about the two that made it in... they were really the only two I wanted in, so I'm happy. These will be two fun ones to research.

message 21: by Angie (new)

Angie | 137 comments I voted for one (or both... I'd have to check my notes) of the winners, 2 of the close calls, and one of the bottoms. Interesting results. I'm particularly excited about the Abe list. So many authors I need to read.

I like both of the winners, but I'm bummed that we still have no genre prompts. I hope we get some soon.

I'm feeling good about this week's results. I'm not a fan of the song We Didn't Start the Fire, but it's an interesting basis for a challenge prompt. I'm really glad the Beatles prompt didn't make it. I'm just not that into the Beatles and I feel like I'd have to do a lot more research than I'd really want to.

The Earth Day prompt was in my upvotes so in a poll or two I might resubmit it.

message 23: by Rachel (new)

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 3287 comments Disappointing week for me. I didn't really care for either of the two winners and didn't vote for either of them. I have no connection at all to the Billy Joel song, and even after listening to it when it was suggested, I can't say I'm really a fan. The Abe list was okay, but I strongly preferred many of the other lists mentioned up until now. I have options I can work with for both, but I was hoping for something different.

I think I also found it a bit disappointing because I predicted these would both be winners pretty much right away based on the discussion. Even though we've seen that the discussions don't always match up with the actual results, these both seemed so overwhelmingly loved that it really wasn't a surprise to see them here. I just thought we might get one or two others with them.

I am TOTALLY doing the same thing! :-D

message 25: by Pam (new)

Pam (bluegrasspam) | 3885 comments I am really curious to see what people decide to read for the Billy Joel song prompt! Thank you Dalex for the thread identifying the different categories and topics. That’s extremely helpful!

message 26: by Joanne (new)

Joanne | 478 comments When the Billy Joel prompt was suggested, I immediately disliked the idea, because I wasn't really familiar with the song, but after looking at the link posted listing all the things mentioned in the song, I ended up voting for it.

I didn't vote either way for the Abe list but I'm sure it won't be hard to find a book on my tbr for that. Disappointed that Earth Day and 2020 didn't make it through though.

message 27: by Jen (new)

Jen (jentrewren) | 78 comments Ist lot of voting where I don't like any of the chosen ones. Oh well I guess that's why it is a "challenge".

Just coming back here to reiterate how excited I am for these two prompts. So many GOOD options to choose from.

I'm interested to see how allowing multi-week prompts in regular polls will play out. I think that this option (not allowing BB&B to be added, but allowing for it and others to be submitted in regular polls) was the most fair, although I did vote for adding BB&B and not allowing any others to be added. In the past, multi-week prompts haven't done well in regular polls, especially if they were longer than 2 weeks, but I guess we will see how it plays out, since there were so many good multi-week prompts suggested. I'd vote for another one in the list.
