When You're Not Reading a Cozy
Listened to City of Glass which is the 3rd book in the Mortal Instruments series. Not sure how many more I will listen to at this point. I also listened to Saturn Run which has started me on a scifi crave. Such a good read. Then I read an ARC of Creatures: A Novel which I really didn't care for. But then I had received an ARC of Salvaged which was pure scifi and definitely fed my need. I listened to Inferno which I enjoyed but then I'm a fan of books filled with information in an enjoyable form. And now I am listening to Station Eleven which is post-apocalyptic and which reminds me of Cormac McCarthy's The Road just a bit and I am reading an ARC of Once Upon a Cowboy Christmas which is just for fun!
My review for
The Shape of Night by Tess Gerritsen Disappointing!https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Read for another group: The Dead by James Joyce. This was my second reading of it, having done so in a college Lit class, but it’s been long enough I didn’t remember how it ended. We read two other stories in his Dubliners, as well as A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. I much preferred the short stories.
Currently reading Meddling Kids and really enjoying it. Just enough funny to make the creepiness worthwhile for me. Creepy and I don't always get along. Also reading Well-Read Black Girl: Finding Our Stories, Discovering Ourselves which I just started, but am enjoying the essays a great deal.
Reading
Dane Curse by Matt Abraham, a mash-up of hardboiled detective and superheroes. I am about a fifth of the way in and it is quite enjoyable.
Both of my books this week turned out to be non-cozies. And both from authors named Sue. I didn't even plan that.
Finding Zelda by Sue Ann Jaffarian https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
"O" is for Outlaw by Sue Grafton https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I've got a middle grade book and a legal thriller audio book this week:
Charlie Thorne and the Last Equation by Stuart Gibbs https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
The Lincoln Lawyer by Michael Connelly https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
My review for
Rotto! Clancy the Quokka of Rottnest Island by Jonathan Macphersonhttps://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Presently reading Double Crossed: The Missionaries Who Spied for the United States During the Second World War by Matthew Avery Sutton and listening toVillette by Charlotte Brontë
I'm currently busy with the latest Vicki Delany it's called A Scandal in ScarletAfter this, I'll go back to a series I was busy with. The Prey Series by John Sandford It features a detective by the name of Lucas Davenport and there are 29 books. I can't remember what book I'm on next. 20 I think.....It's a little heavy, so it's nice to break it up with cozy mysteries in between.
I recently read Sophie Kinsella's latest publication: I Owe You One
and was pleasantly surprised. I say this because I was a big fan of Sophie Kinsella at one time. The first five or six books of her Shopaholic series and her standalones:
—Twenties Girl
—The Undomestic Goddess
—Can You Keep a Secret?
. . . are among my favourite romantic comedies. (Saving I've Got Your Number for later to read as a special treat. My friend assures me it's as good as the books I mentioned above :-)
But then her writing just seemed to have lost its spark. The later books of her Shopaholic series didn't appeal much, and her standalone: Wedding Night actually felt like it was written by someone else! I simply stopped reading her books altogether.
I'm glad I picked up I Owe You One, though. It wasn't a five-star read, but I could see some of her original spark in the book. Looks like I'm going to get my favourite romcom author back after all :-)
Finished The Witch of Portobello by Paulo Coelho yesterday. Good, but not my typical fair and definitely not a fast read. Bonus: applied to two challenges. After that, I needed something lighter (not to mention a pink cover), so started April Lady by Georgette Heyer last night.

I really liked April Lady.
Also enjoyed: Lady of Quality, Regency Buck, Cotillion, Arabella, Friday's Child, Frederica, Sylvester, The Convenient Marriage, Devil's Cub and several others.
Her detective mysteries are also great. I haven't read them all yet, but I very much enjoyed the ones I did: Death in the Stocks, No Wind of Blame, and Why Shoot a Butler?
My review for
The Night Fire: A Ballard and Bosch Thriller by Michael Connellyhttps://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Ramla — I’ve read a couple others by her, Arabella and Envious Casca, and enjoyed both. You might like to know that Heyer will be our December featured author.

I am working my way through the Ms. Marvel, Vol. 1: No Normal collections. Also reading Gender Outlaws: The Next Generation. I have ended up with a million library holds so I am making my way through my extra large pile before I start anything I own.
One non-fiction book this week:
I'll Be There for You: The One About Friends by Kelsey Miller https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
