Gift Giving Traditions
December 1, 2021 - February 28, 2022
100 p. min.

9/9

1. China
Sharing gifts in China revolves around respect and gratitude, and there are specific rules in regards to etiquette. Their etiquette demands that the recipient refuse the gift at least two or three times, so as not to appear too greedy. The giver is required to insist upon the offer until their present is finally accepted. The color of the wrapping paper is also significant — red wishes the recipient good luck, gold will bring good fortune, and yellow extends happiness.

✱Read a book with a red, gold or yellow cover (post cover) - Jack of Spades by Joyce Carol Oates-12/28/21- Jack of Spades by Joyce Carol Oates
OR read a book set in a location that starts with a letter in CHINA (tell us where).

2. Croatia
Gift giving is a big deal in Croatia. Come back from a trip: bring gift. Go to a dinner at someone's home: bring gifts. See someone you haven't seen in a while: bring a gift. In fact, any situation can be an opportunity to give a gift, so it is important to have an extra box of chocolates, packets of coffee, small jewelry, or some wine stowed safely away. However, because of this strong gift culture, don’t be surprised if your gift ends up in the secret gift closet to be re-gifted to someone else at a later time.

✱Read a book where the MC receives a gift (tell us what) -Felipe receives a drawing from a student in Here the Whole Time by Vitor Martins-12/25/21-
OR read a book set in a location that starts with a letter in CROATIA (tell us where).

3. Iceland
Since Iceland is one of the most literate countries in the world, the country’s holiday gift-giving tradition is every book lover’s dream. The tradition is called “Yule Book Flood”. Before the holidays, the country distributes a free national catalog that contains every recently published book in Iceland. Using the catalog, gift-givers choose books for their loved ones and present the gifts on Christmas Eve. Then everyone spends the evening happily reading their newly acquired books at home.

✱Read a book with a title that starts with a letter in YULE (ignore A, An or The) - A Life on Our Planet: My Witness Statement and a Vision for the Future by David Attenborough 12/1/21-
OR read a book set in a location that starts with a letter in ICELAND (tell us where).

4. India
Indian tradition specifies the exact way a gift should be handed over. Since the left hand is considered unclean, it should not be used for eating, shaking hands, or giving gifts. Hence, gift-givers must always offer the gift using the right hand in order to be respectful. Gifting money is also a welcomed tradition in India, but the amount of cash or value of
a check must always be an odd number since they believe odd numbers bring good luck.

✱Read an ODD numbered series book (i.e.1, 3, 5) OR read a book set in a location that starts with a letter in INDIA (tell us where).-New York City- Jazz by Toni Morrison-1/3/22-

5. Japan
In Japan, presentation is crucial!! The wrapping paper shouldn’t be too ostentatious, so using pastel-colored wrapping paper and bows is best. Also, the recipient is expected to open the gift in private and must later reciprocate the gesture as a way to show their gratitude.

✱Read a book with a pastel-colored cover (post cover) OR read a book set in a location that starts with a letter in JAPAN (tell us where).- Japan- Spring Garden by Tomoka Shibasaki- 12/1/21-

6. Kenya
Many cultures don’t approve of the act of spitting, especially when it comes to gift-giving, but for the nomadic Maasai people of Kenya, it is essential. The Maasai recognize spitting as a blessing, which is why it is common for gifts to be spit on before being presented to the recipient. This act demonstrates respect toward the recipient and wishes them good luck.

✱Read a book by an author whose initials can be found in MAASAI OR read a book set in a location that starts with a letter in KENYA (tell us where).-England- Home Fire by Kamila Shamsie-12/16/21-

7. Mexico
Mexico isn’t as strict with its gift-giving etiquette, but there are certain unwritten rules surrounding the tradition. For example, guests should bring gifts for each child in the home, as a way to show respect to the hosts. Gifts are also opened immediately, with the recipient showing much enthusiasm to express their gratitude. Gift-giving is also not limited to the living. On the Day of the Dead (November 1) many Mexicans offer tequila, sugar skulls, or marigolds to their loved ones who have passed, leaving them on graves or altars to be received on the other side.

✱ Read a book that was published in NOVEMBER (any year) OR read a book set in a location that starts with a letter in MEXICO (tell us where).-Myanmar- The Trouser People: A Story of Burma in the Shadow of the Empire by Andrew Marshall-12/12/21

8. Russia
In Russia you will find that the language of flowers is important in gift-giving, and the ritual can reveal unspoken messages between the giver and receiver. For example, if a man is interested in a woman romantically, he should offer her a bouquet of three flowers to show his initial interest. Should the courtship continue, a bouquet of five flowers will demonstrate his developing feelings, seven flowers will show an intention of marriage, and nine flowers express a sense of deep love and respect. In this case, avoid even-numbered bouquets, for they are only used for funerals.

✱Read a book with a cover that prominently displays flowers (post cover) OR read a book set in a location that starts with a letter in RUSSIA (tell us where).-Iraq- God in Pink by Hasan Namir-12/8/21-

9. United Kingdom
The culture of gifting in the UK is characterized by a number of unique gifts. A very popular gift here are lottery tickets. In fact, more lottery tickets are purchased and given as gifts in the UK than anywhere else in the world. On your 21st birthday expect to receive a decorative key to "open up the future" for you. And although diamonds are usually gifted on the celebration of 75 years of marriage, in the UK they are associated with the 60 year mark in honor of Queen Victoria’s 60th Jubilee of Reign.

✱Read a book with a page count that includes both 6 AND O (share page count) OR read a book set in a location that starts with a letter in UNITED KINGDOM (tell us where).-United States-That Was Then, This Is Now by S.E. Hinton -12/3/21

Ed Lehman | 2907 comments Virtual Vacations-National Dishes Update #6

This month we added 3 new countries (Philippines, Kenya and Iran) and 1 Region (Macau) to our gastronomic travels....and we added some new dishes from 3 others (United Kingdom, France and Brazil). Several people advised us to get our Filipino food at Tita's Kitchenette in National City...and it was good advice, everything was delicious. For my birthday, Ramiro took me to Flavors of East Africa in San Diego to sample several Kenyan dishes...and afterwards to Creme de la Crepe for some wonderful dessert crepes and lattes (Viva la France!). We visited the Balboa International Market on January 11 and found a bakery there. We got a fresh warm loaf of Sangok... Iranian bread...about the shape of an ironing board....and then visited the Iranian restaurant next door....where one of the dishes was most noteworthy---Fesenjan--- a chicken stew made with walnuts and pomegranate...just excellent.
We also had some Pastel de Nata which are a custard pie.... and a dish for Macau and Portugal...but counting it for Macau this time.
We went (virtually) to the UK for some notable honeycomb toffee. Our trip with Kathy Simmons on January 13 to Sabor de Vida had us trying several wonderful Brazilian dishes. Details in the photos below.

Carbamazepine

I’m hoping my first idea can work since we are switching up some of the usual ways of things to adapt to our times.
(I have such a huge magazine backlog, I wish something like this was a perpetual option.Maybe a 5 point task?)
Anyway, if it can work….I have no problem if you would want to change the parameters more than I have set out…my main idea is to get some magazines read.
I used the 75% rule because even though I read the New Yorker and some other magazines cover-to-cover*…even old issues in my piles….I do so with an asterisk- I will skip over articles that clearly aren’t relevant anymore (like financial/market analysis)….or 2012 election analyses and such.

1) Read at least 75% of a magazine with substance… (Even the best magazines have articles that can be skipped.) .Think something like the New Yorker, National Geographic, Audubon or The Atlantic….not People or US. (No celebrity or fashion magazines or magazines that rely mostly on photo-journalism) In one or two sentences tell us about the best article you read and/or something that you learned. When posting give the name and date of the magazine issue you read.

My two back-up suggestions are:

2) Ed’s Task- Read a book with a title OR sub-title that begins OR ends with either the letters “E” or “D”. Articles (The, A, An) may be ignored.

3) Bigger and Better- Read a book with at least 400 pages and with a minimum of a 4.0 rating

Hi Bob,

I have been feeling so guilty about not writing to you. I missed sending a Christmas card because I didn’t have your address until I received your card. I then procrastinated like crazy and life intervened. Then I went and bought this St. Patrick’s Day card….with the intention to write to you then. More procrastination. Arghhhhh!

CHALLENGE #921- CCC
see- https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

NATIONAL KAZOO DAY, 1/1 – 1/31
150p. min.

7/7 COMPLETE

1. Alabama Vest of Macon, Georgia, made the first Kazoo in the 1840's. Actually, he conceived the Kazoo, and had Thaddeus Von Clegg, a German-American clockmaster make it to his specifications. It was first presented to the world at the Georgia State Fair in 1852.
🎵 Read a book in which at least one character attends a fair/festival/carnival; tell us who and what kind of event OR a book originally published in a year ending in 0; tell us the year- -Clea by Lawrence Durrell 3/8/22
-pub. 1960

2. It is believed that the Kazoos closest relative is the African version of a mirliton, a group of instruments characterized by having a vibrating membrane. The African horn-mirliton was used to distort voices at tribe gatherings.
🎵 Read a book set in Africa; tell us where OR a book where the first letter of every word in the title can be found in HORNMIRLITON; 2-word minimum (a letter can only be used as many times as it appears in the phrase)- Red Lights by Georges Simenon-6/27/22 -

3. A Kazoo is a tube-shaped, American musical instrument, with both ends of the tube uncovered. One end of the tube is flattened, while the other end of the tube has a small circular opening. Around two thirds down the instrument there is another circular hole, leading to a small chamber, where a wax-membrane is situated. The membrane, which is fixed around the edges by a circular cylinder-ring, is free to oscillate.
🎵 Read a book with a musical instrument shown prominently on the cover; post the cover OR a book with a Z somewhere in the author's name; post a link to the author's GR page- The Godfather by Mario Puzo-3/1/22

4. Kazoos can be made of plastic, metal, wood or other materials. Each has unique sound qualities, but the tone quality of a Kazoo is determined by the quality of the membrane or resonator. The membrane is the key point of the Kazoo. This membrane gives the Kazoo its distinction from other horn section instruments. Some have called the Kazoo a "singing drum."
🎵 Read a book whose title contains OO - Books Promiscuously Read: Reading as a Way of Life by Heather Cass White-7/1/22
OR a book with a character who works in manufacturing; tell us who and their job

5. Commercial production of the Kazoo didn't begin until 1912. Manufacturing was started by Emil Sorg, a traveling salesman, in Western New York. Sorg joined up with Michael McIntyre, a Buffalo tool and die maker. Production moved to Eden, NY where the factory museum remains today as a working museum.
🎵 Read a book set between 1900 and 1930 (inclusive); tell us when -1926- Jazz by Toni Morrison-1/3/22
OR a book by an author whose last name contains the prefix Mc (will also accept Mac as long as it's a prefix and not simply the first three letters of the last name); post a link to the author's GR page

6. Other manufacturers of Kazoos tried to get in on the sales market, but McIntyre got a patent for his product in 1923, limiting competition. Today, Kazoobie Kazoos, America's largest manufacturer, sells nearly 1 million Kazoos every year.
🎵 Read a book by an author whose first and last initials are the same; post a link to the author's GR page OR a book with two of these in the total page count: 1, 2, 3, 9; tell us how many pages- -The Spy Who Loved Me by Ian Fleming-3/2/22 - 198p

7. Kazoos are easy to play: Don't blow into a Kazoo; instead, simply hum into the big end of the Kazoo. By singing or speaking through the Kazoo, the player creates an air current which makes the membrane vibrate and thus creates a summing, "nasal" sound. By wholly or partially covering up the membrane hole, a large variety of sounds can be created.
🎵 Read a book with a character who is a musician; tell us who and what they play OR a book that was easy to read; briefly explain-well...listened to the book while driving- Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denimby David Sedaris-1/7/22-
