Casey Cassidy (caseycassidy) | 2 comments I'm taking this pretty casually compared to the way I normally approach reading challenges, but I don't want to put too much pressure on myself. Either way - I've already finished a few challenges so here I am.

1) A book published posthumously

2) A book of true crime

3) A classic of genre fiction (i.e. mystery, sci fi/fantasy, romance)

4) A comic written and illustrated by the same person

5) A book set in or about one of the five BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, or South Africa)

6) A book about nature

7) A western
Shadows of Self - not actually a western but it's got all those western vibes + magic, set on a different world. Still counting it.

8) A comic written or illustrated by a person of color

9) A book of colonial or postcolonial literature

10) A romance novel by or about a person of color
The Doctor's Discretion PoC lead in this historical gay romance which was so good. I don't actually know about the author but this was real good.

11) A children’s classic published before 1980

12) A celebrity memoir

13) An Oprah Book Club selection

14) A book of social science

15) A one-sitting book
The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue This book was SO GOOD, probably not a normal one sitter but I had a good few hours and wanted a distraction.

16) The first book in a new-to-you YA or middle grade series

17) A sci fi novel with a female protagonist by a female author

18) A comic that isn’t published by Marvel, DC, or Image
Giant Days, Vol. 6 I love this comic, so much fun. Published by BOOM!

19) A book of genre fiction in translation

20) A book with a cover you hate
The Duchess Deal There's probably covers I hate more, but I've always hated the classic bodice ripper cover so here we are.

21) A mystery by a person of color or LGBTQ+ author

22) An essay anthology

23) A book with a female protagonist over the age of 60

24) An assigned book you hated (or never finished)

Doing the research is one of my favorite parts of the challenge. :)

Your list looks good to me. The only thing I'd mention is that a mod stated that an essay anthology is essays by a variety of authors. If the essays are all by one author, it's a collection. News to me! Anyway, essays by a variety of authors is how this group is defining the "essay anthology" task. Here are some suggestions from Book Riot:

Isn't Meddling Kids a novel, not a comic? I own a copy, but I haven't read it yet so I guess there could be a comic element to it I don't know about. I've never heard of The Revenge of the Radioactive Lady - that looks like something I will definitely have to check out!

Thanks, that was a copy-paste error. I meant to have A Wrinkle in Time there!

You are right, I just got a copy from my library hold the other day and I took a peek and it's a novel. I was under the impression that it was a graphic novel, especially since the author is also an illustrator. Now I'm disappointed :( I'll have to search (again...) for something else. It's hard to find comics or graphic novels that are written and illustrated by the same person, especially ones I also want to read! Despite being an artist and also a writer, I'm not a huge comics fan lol.

I've had Revenge of the Radioactive Lady on my TBR for soooo long, I figured now must be the time! I've read the first chapter and I'm intrigued so far!

If you want something more novel-like in a graphic novel, I recommend Ghosts by Raina Telgemeier. It's a really sweet story about a family that moves to a new town for health reasons and it's centered around El Dio de los Muertes. I plan to read El Deafo for this one.

Thanks for the suggestion. I went back into the thread for this prompt and remembered I had My Friend Dahmer on hold at the library. I added your suggestion to my comics tbr list :)

It's definitely a novel.

(FWIW, I was looking forward to it but I didn't really like it. So glad I didn't buy it in hardback.)

Hi Robin,

When you are on the full Goodreads webpage (not on a mobile device, but a computer), and you are typing a comment, there's tiny text above & below the box where you are typing. In most browsers there's a link just above that box that reads "add book/author." Click that link & follow the directions! It is fairly easy to use, but if you run into any problems just ask. :)
