Review:
I was actually really surprised about how great I thought this book was. I'd had it on my book shelf at home for about 2-3 years, but never picked it up. I had a challenge where I had to read a book with a purple cover and could only find this one. I was so happy with the choice. I loved the world that's created in this series. The way they use magic was very interesting, and I really liked the MC.

Review:
This was a nice take on the vampire genre. I liked getting to know about the history about the Blue Bloods. One of the things I didn't like, that made me not give it 5 stars was that I had to read parts of it from a girls POV that I didn't like. If I'd been without that I'd have been happy.

At first I was a little confused when reading this one, but I really liked the story. I listened to it on audio, but wasn't so fond of the narrator, so that turned the rating down a little. I do have great hopes for the future of this series.

I love the MC in this series. Mercy is such a likable hero. I have been hesitant about shifter romances, so I'm so happy that I love this series. Adam is really hot, and I think Stefan is funny.

A book away from an episode of hoarders (fidgit77) | 740 comments July Review:

The Cestus Concern (Weir Codex, #1) by Mat Nastos

Title/Author: The Cestus Concern
Series: Weir Codex
Read: 07/01/14
Rating: **1/2
First time author? Yes
To-Be-Continued? Oh lord no...

Review: The book opens as our MC Malcolm Weir, an Army Ranger, is waking up in an operating room, he disoriented and when the surgeons in the room realize it, they try and give him a shut down code.

But he's human, at least he used to be, and it doesn't work because he's more human than they want him to be now. He gets angry and literally PULVERIZES the poor woman doctor who was working on him. He then bursts through a glass wall, head butts another woman, all while being shot. Of course, he’s half metal and he’s got an ‘autoheal’ feature. He gets in a fight with a guy with more rage than you can shake a stick at and explodes out of a secret government installation.

He has no idea how he got where he is, how he got how he is, and all that jazz. But he’s going to fight, oh yes. Through almost every page there is super powered mercenaries and assassins the government sends after him. Not a very nice way to treat a veteran. *tsk tsk*

This is like a really bad action movie (think Punisher: War Zone), all adrenaline fueled and testosterone laden. HIGH body count, lots of blood, lots of fights, etc... The story was itself was weak, imho, but if you just think of it as pure entertainment, it might be something you could enjoy. If this was a movie, I’d probably watch it again. After all, there was never a dull moment and I read it in one sitting

Review: The first half of this book was painful, I just couldn't get into it because she went into so much detail and world building. After she got through with all of that, then it was interesting. The book is about two children who were born of families with certain gifts and how they struggle with the burden of them and the responsibilities that go with them. I might not read the next one, but now that the world building part is out of they way I may give it a shot.

Review: OMG I loved this book! I normally tolerate the first book in a series because I know it's a lot of world building, but this has got to be the best first book of an Urban Fantasy series that I've read in a long time! I just freaking loved everything about this book, there was absolutely nothing that I didn't like about it. I now know what all they hype is about with Anne Bishop. This author rocks my socks off!!!

Review: I liked Maggie from the start, but I didn't like Rogan at first. Not sure why, now but I remember thinking early on that I didn't like him. I did like them together, but I didn't really see the love, although I wasn't surprised when Rogan realized he loved her. It seemed unbelievable, but somehow expected (maybe just because this book is a romance?)

Review: I absolutely loved it. It would make a wonderful film. What you have here is Hogwarts for Fairy Tales. It's blindingly obvious in place as to how the story will turn out, but it's beautifully done. Rather dark in places for YA, but then Fairy Tales aren't exactly sweetness and light.

Review: From the description, this looked like a fairly straightforward, run of the mill urban fantasy with a blue-collar hero turned paranormal by an utterly predictible accident, and hijinks ensue. Boy was I surprised! Unique setup, unique setting, nifty twist on the standard UF tropes. The herione is spunky and approachable, the love interest totally NOT who/what I would have predicted. Definitely going to continue this series.

I've -almost- read it three or four times now, but for some reason, it was just the right read at the right time. I've already read the 2nd book, but that's all the library has. Yet. Just submitted the rest of the series to the library's "suggest a book" for purchase. :-)

Review: It took me a while to get into this book, although I'm not sure why. It reminds me of Graham's Krewe of Hunters series. Mystery and ghosts with some romance. The ending was strangely sappy, but it worked very well. I still don't understand why the guy always has to save the girl. I don't really care that much in the end, but why can't she save herself sometimes? Kendell did really well at the end, but still.

Review: I love a good crime novel and I love the Grant County books by this author. I was nervous about starting this series, but I'm glad I did. This was every bit a clever as Grant County, just as gruesome. It was very good at keeping things just out of reach until the right moment. The only downside for me was the lack of likeable characters.

Review: I got the first three books in this series as a kindle freebie a few weeks ago. I'm not sure why this series jumped to the top of my TBR pile but I'm glad it did. Fairy tale rewrites tend to be a big hit or miss for me. I've never read a rewrite of Alice in Wonderland, but the world that Hall has created (re-created really, since it's Wonderland) is an interesting one. Words have power and Alice is destined for the Hatter. The first five books in this series are the "Bad Five" which is explained in this book. The other four are Gerard, Wolf, Jinni & Hook, which is a very odd collection of men. I wasn't sure at some point in this book that the Hatter and Alice would really get their HEA, since the Hatter was so against it and Alice was getting sick of him being stubborn. It all works out, which isn't really a surprise.

Review: I meant to read Covet by J.R. Ward this month, but got 80 pages in and came to a dead stop.

I've been in a real reading funk this last couple of months and have struggled to get involved in anything.

One of my pet interests is the monarchy here in England, with a particular interest in the Tudors. I've never sat down to watch the BBC series of the Tudors though, which is weird, considering Henry Cavill is in it.

After watching 4 episodes in a row I suddenly got the desire to read Kiss of the Rose, which has been on my Kindle for a while. Henry VIII, Vampires, Druids, an interesting mix. Not entirely unpleasant - but there weren't enough vampires in it for me - there's no real fighting until well over halfway in. The main couple spend a lot of time fighting their attraction and it's hard to see how their situation will be resolved.

It was an incredibly quick read - under a day, which is unheard of for me (it is just under 300 pages)

I'm interested enough though to read the next in the trilogy - as it introduces Queen number 2 - Anne Boleyn.

Review: Really ended up loving this book. It had a strike against it going in - it's Young Adult and I tend to avoid those. It's also fantasy, which isn't something I normally read but that's not a strike so much as it is odd for me to read. The POV jumps around a lot, which can be kind of annoying but some of the plotlines merge in this book, so it could have been worse. I like the alternate history the author has set up and I like the characters so far.

The reason this only gets 3 stars is because of my own pet, personal peeve when it comes to pnr/romance/erotica. The very limited dictionary the authors seem to use. If I have to hear/see the words savor/savoured again in the near future I will literally punch the next person I see in the face. PUNCH THEM. Review: An incredibly quick read centring on a division of the NYPD that looks after the rich and famous. Central characters are old flames - the guy is still carrying a torch, the girl takes waaaaaay tooo much enjoyment in her job. It was good fun.

Review: While I didn't find it as engaging as her newer series (Prospero's War), it was quite enjoyable. Very nice to find a non-standard treatment of the paranormal cast of critters (vampieres, mages, demons, and fairies - no weres!), and an intriguing mythology and magic system.

Review: I've noticed that a lot of Heather Graham's heroes seem to start out as complete assholes. I did end up liking David, but even Katie did something stupid - she really starts out as TSTL (it's 4 am and she's going into a house that shouldn't have any lights on). I didn't really care about them getting together one way or the other. I will be reading the next one, but I could have done without Katie acting TSTL and David being an asshole at first.

Review:
It was the description of this one that caught my eye, even though I'd let go of another series by this same author (YA, got a bit too angsty for my tastes): Steampunk + Bollywood = Bollypunk! And it was unexpectedly fun. I really enjoyed a fantasy culture built on not-Western culture and not-England/Wild West. Will definitely be looking up the next titles in the series. The heroine is young (seventeen, almost eighteen - her upcoming birthday is a significant plot point), and there is something of a love triangle, but that tension served to move the plot along and actually led to some self-discovery and self-awareness for the heroine, instead of just an HEA.

Review: I actually quite enjoyed this because the storylines weren't as crazy as some of his other books. The characters were likeable and I was interested in what happened to them. I mean, what's not to like - private detectives for the rich and famous.
