maria helena (mariahel) | 964 comments Hey Team Bones! MH from team Ron Weasley here. I just wanted to say that we very much enjoyed looking through your shelves for the Valentine mini-challenge. I personally am very happy that it gave me an excuse to reread The Martian and the push I needed to finally read The Widow.

Good luck this month! :-)

I LOVED it! I wasn't sure what to expect, but it was fun and crazy and I definitely plan on going back. And NO is a fun city in itself so I'd like to go back outside of Marci Gras to experience it without out all the insanity.

Yea, I've heard the same. It's one that's on my 2017 challenge and it's blue. So I figured, it's a good time to knock it out.

It sounds like a really fun read. But I still haven't finished the Dresden Files! Perhaps when I'm caught up with that series I'll move on to this one.

The Areonaut's Windlass was one of my favorites from last year. I read about 90% of my books digitally from the library, but I let myself buy hard copies of my 5-star books (and some 4 star) - lol. I also wanted my kids to read this one.

Stacey (boydsmom) | 94 comments I hate to do this because it fits so well into our second hand, but A Discovery of Witches is going to be a DNF for me. I got about halfway through, but I just can't spend another 300 pages with these people, and what they eat, and how they do yoga, and row, and run and how the drink wine and how they read their books and how they ride their horses and what they wear to do all these things........

I'm hoping its early enough in the month that we can find something else for those spots? If not, I can try to skim the rest.

Billy "D" | 52 comments Ok.... where has everyone been this weekend? Veeeeeeery quiet here....... all weekend. As the self proclaimed "Water Boy" of this team, I expect a little more entertainment from everyone. Now let's bring it in. Ready? 1....2.....3.....TEAM BONES !!!!!!!!!

Now that's better!!!! Carry on.

message 316: by Teddie (last edited Mar 13, 2017 11:06AM) (new)

Teddie (teddieg) | 1011 comments HELLO! Sorry for my quiet this weekend :)

Have you all had a chance to look at the March Mini Challenge? Verry interesting...

I added a couple sheets to our planning sheet this morning.

Part 1 seems straightforward, but will require us to read books associated with the UNO teams.

Basically, we'll need:
- 5 books read that were written by UNO team authors
- 10 books read with character names that can be found in the team books.

To help with Part 1, I added a March Mini Resources sheet that list all the team names & authors, as well as a compilation of character names from the team books. (Please feel free to add to the characters if you know of / find more.)

Part 2 is a Spell-It-Out challenge, for words that we decide on based on the letters from team names. If you look on the March Mini sheet, you can see the 48 letters we have to make our scrabble words. I played around a little with the math, and here's what I'm thinking:
EDIT: I think we should go for a 7+7+7+5+5 combo.
What do you guys think?

Shamber | 151 comments Thanks Teddie! I just added Stardust by Neil Gaiman to read. That will cover a mini challenge author and a few options for the regular challenge. I saw we need a few 6's. Let me know if I am incorrect about the mini challenge. Happy Monday Team Bones! :)

Awesome! We might use that for a 9 too. We do need 6's but they seem pretty common, so I've been filling some of the other numbers first.

Teddie (teddieg) | 1011 comments Countdown to March Mini start

I came up with a scrabble words combo (on Resources sheet) but PLEASE - if any of you have a better / preferred combination, please add it to the sheet. If there are a few choices of combo's that work, we can always decide as a team which to use. (I just wanted to make sure we had at least one.)

message 322: by Teddie (new)

Teddie (teddieg) | 1011 comments I updated my thoughts on the Scrabble portion - I think we should go for a 7+7+7+5+5 combo. (as many as we can of course.)
What do you guys think?

message 323: by Stacey (new)

Stacey (boydsmom) | 94 comments I'm going to start Blood Bound in the next few days (or after 3/15 now) so I can add that to part one, but can also be used for the scavenger hunt if we still need.

The scrabble part makes my head hurt. We can use each letter only as often as it appears, correct? So I guess we are limited on how many long words we can make and spell more than how many books we can read? Or a bit of both, I suppose. Is that right?

Teddie, I agree, it makes sense to get as many 7 letter words as we can without leaving us with a bunch of letters we can't use.

message 324: by Stacey (new)

Stacey (boydsmom) | 94 comments Oh, I forgot...Do you know if we can use all the author's names to count? I'm not going to be reading any more JD Robb before the end of the month, but I might read a Nora Roberts. Could we use that?

I found 3 7-letter words and 3 5-letter words, using letters once just from the available letters. I'm wondering whether I should just post the words on the Mini sheet so we can start planning what to read...

That would be great. I noticed we have limited vowels, so if you have the words that work, I would say let's run with those.

message 328: by Teddie (new)

Teddie (teddieg) | 1011 comments Ok, our words are on the March Mini sheet.

I would look for books to hit the Mini challenge in this order:
- books by UNO author
- books with UNO character name
- 7 letter (blue) books

Let's hold off for a week on starting any 5 letter (orange) books, so we really focus on the Part 1 books and 7 letter books.

Let me know if you have any questions / suggestions!!
Go Team Bones!

Trinia | 935 comments Hey all! Just dropping by to say Hi! We just arrived in Dallas and are driving home from the airport. I finished another book today and have got to learn about our new mini challenge and strategies!
I didn't get as much reading done as I would like to. This trip was Fast and Furious! Up early and to bed late. We switched hotels and countries at least every other night. It was an amazing trip! But I cannot wait to get home to my bed, my house and my books!
I'll get back with everyone tomorrow :D
Ciao!

Victoria | 387 comments Wow, I've been really anti-social for this challenge. Anyways, the books by an UNO author will be very easy for me since I've been reading a lot of them already. For the mini I plan on reading:
Silence Fallen by Patricia Briggs and
Changes by Jim Butcher (that way I can keep up with Elizabeth, lol)

I hope you like The Martian - I found it to be really fun, Watney is so inherently upbeat. I shed a few layers of defensive pessimism while reading it - lol.

Shamber | 151 comments I finished In the Shadow of Lakecrest by Elizabeth Blackwell last night. I would give it a 3.5 out of 5. It was a little longer than I cared for with its story/plot. Sometimes I felt that some pages weren't needed.
I will start Stardust by Neil Gaiman today.
I was also thinking about reading Persuasion by Jane Austen for a P on scrabble / character name on the scavenger hunt (Anne).

Ooh! have fun Billy! They never have green beer here in little ole Texas :( Not like back in Buffalo. ENJOY!

So, I'm home and catching up on my books... whew!

Today I finished An Abundance of Katherines by John Green
and Anna Dressed in Blood (Anna, #1) by Kendare Blake

Both very cute YA books, both about young romance <3

I've been trying to get through Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier for the longest time and it's so boring.... Anyone read it??? Does it get better after they arrive at Manderley?
I may have to splurge and get the audiobook, I'm #7 on the waitlist at the library :/

Happy St. Patty's Day y'all!!!!

Stacey (boydsmom) | 94 comments Sooo, I'm changing one of my books that's already been slotted to a hand. I was going to read Boomerang but the challenge I was going to read it for changed, and I don't need it anymore. BUT -- I am going to read Ego Maniac and the author's first name is Vi, so I will replace my V. :) Just wanted to let you know before it disappears from my list.

message 347: by Victoria (new)

Victoria | 387 comments I finished Silence Fallen (Mercy Thompson, #10) by Patricia Briggs and loved it!!! I'd say it's one of my favorites of the series, but I'd really have to reread the books to say for certain. But, it is great regardless. And I put it in for the Mini under character names.

Now I'm off to read changes since I hear it's so good =)

Stacey (boydsmom) | 94 comments Strategy question on the Spell it out part of the March challenge.... Should we try to fill in and finish 7 letter words first? Or just fill them in and let you Captains move them around at the end?

message 350: by Teddie (new)

Teddie (teddieg) | 1011 comments @Stacey
First off - thanks for the heads up about the book swap!

Re: strategy -- I'll go through our books tomorrow morning and post an update of where we are wrt numbers. We are looking good tho :)

I'm thinking let's start just on the seven letter word books for now. I think we should be able to get through all 3 7-letter words, and then even maybe get to a few more words, but to your point: let's focus on the blue 7 letter words books to start. What do you guys think?

We have a little over a week to go with our March books - a good time to evaluate what you think you can read in the last week :)
