Barbara (cinnabarb) | 10022 comments I finished The Woman in Cabin 10 by Ruth Ware The Woman in Cabin 10 by Ruth Ware.

This book has gotten a lot of hype recently so I couldn't resist borrowing it from the library. It's about a travel reporter on a cruise ship who believes the woman in the next room (Cabin 10) has been murdered. Doesn't live up to the publicity but it's an okay story. 3 stars.

John I've still got a bit of the Philip Marlowe novelThe Black-Eyed Blonde, a decent stab at continuing the series, but the plot doesn't really grab me, more like a vehicle for continuous quips.

First of all: excellent review! I agree with you, BTW, on the idea that characters need not necessarily be likable for a book to be good or interesting. Plenty of books (and movies and tv shows) have unlikable protagonists.

I also can't fault you for liking her storytelling style. I, too, dug the way she tethered together this Christie-esque tale of lost love, deception, and -- ultimately -- murder.

However, I came to dislike 'In a Dark, Dark Wood' by the end. The way the book unraveled felt obligatory, when compared with the relatively natural way the book sets off.

Also, I felt like the secondary characters became almost unnecessary and useless after a certain point. I think I expected the book to play out in a much different manner than it did, and when the mystery just got started, it kind of snaps to the climax and then ends. I was bitterly disappointed with it.

That being said, I'm going to give 'The Woman in Cabin 10' a chance, because I do like Ruth Ware's writing style.

Zoe Radley | 558 comments ^^ I have read that book too and agree whole heartedly with you on that I like her style but I expected more from the ending. How is the next book? Is it any better?

I am currently reading a classic that I have never read before.... to kill a mockingbird by Harper lee and I am thoroughly enjoying it and loving the sense of looking at the adults world through a child's eyes. I don't have any idea why I have never read this before

I gave up on Dark Dark Wood when I realized I loathed all of the characters; Cabin 10 was pretty good, except for the main character's relationship with her boyfriend, which really didn't matter much to the plot.

Laura/Mystery in Minutes | 66 comments T., (Zoe), and John:

I did not have quite the same experience of In a Dark, Dark Wood, as evidenced by my generally positive review.
I would urge readers to decide for themselves by experiencing the novel. We can only review and rate a book based upon our own unique backgrounds and preferences. I have found that the polarizing books can often serve as a litmus test for which reviewers, book bloggers, etc. share your taste in a particular genre - but we can all still talk about our shared love of reading in a civil way : )
Thank you for taking the time to read and comment on my review.

Jess McDonald (jessbymyshelf) | 26 comments I just finished, and oh my word, I recommend this one! I added this one to my "to-read" list because it was a nominee for best horror. It was not as dark as some horror-fanatics crave but it was definitely haunting. I did enjoy this one, by far, more than its competition: "The Disappearance at Devil's Rock".

Now I'm about to go head first into "In a dark, dark wood" by Ruth Ware. This is our new book of the month winner, so I'm eager to see what's in store with this one!

Ink and Bone Ink and Bone by Lisa Unger

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Finley Montgomery, is a young woman with a unique and incredible gift...a gift she doesn't want. Passed on by her grandmother Eloise, is the only one she can turn to for guidance.

Merri Gleason won't accept that her child is gone after being kidnapped 11 months ago on a family outing. Merri feels that she is the only one that has not emotionally moved past the tragedy so she seeks out the last shimmer of hope she has left, the help from a private detective that works closely with Eloise, a renowned psychic living in the "Hollows". The very same place in which her daughter Abbey was kidnapped.

I gave this one a 4.3 out of 5

There are no words to describe this book other than: Hauntingly beautiful! It had everything that I, as a reader could love in a book. I am afraid to admit that I'm not one to dive into the world of the paranormal existence but this added feature made me exert any and all emotions. I went from rage to downright balling my eyes out. Most of all, the heroine-Finley, was to me, like a rocker Jennifer Love Hewitt from "Ghost Whisperer". I hope that Ms. Unger follows up with Finley, in a series all her own. I would enjoy reading how she progresses in her "abilities".

One of the best books I've read all year and maybe the best debut novel I've ever read. I'm going to make everyone I know read this and I'm going to shove it in the hands of any stranger I meet who seems even slightly interested in reading mystery/thrillers.

Just an outstanding book.

Serpents in the City by H.N. Wake
A totally knockout political thriller. Came from nowhere, I didn't recognise the author, and it sorta bubbled up on my reading list without me actively choosing it.
I'm SO GLAD I gave it a chance, and it reminded me why I like to try books by not-known / indie authors.
Great protagonist; a smart, highly skilled woman. Great supporting characters (inc an intriguing Native American FBI dude). But best of all - intelligent plot, very timely. All about how the 'establishment' pull the levers to serve their long-term self-interest.
All kinds of resonance with recent election results - but it doesn't lecture or hector, and does contain a stonking plot.
I am now officially a fan!
