Beth is a research scientist at a for profit lab in Denver whose lab rats are mysteriously dying, potentially ending any chances that she will be able to complete her research. Beth is sure that somebody has been sabotaging her research but can't seem to get anybody else to believe her, not even her husband Harold. Dealing with the loss of her research and a potential saboteur is stressful enough, but Beth also must take care of her aging Aunt Kathleen, a chain-smoking, "independent" woman who B ...more

A book that deserves received awards and an author I'm definitely going to search for when I want something well written.

Not the typical (oh-I-can-read-only-simple-short-fast-paced-mystery-novellas) sleuth...not a typical story, actually I think there are about 3 stories going on that intertwine espionage and death with a family saga. Then there's the backstory driven by a zany/likable/chain-smoking exFlapper--the center of the story. It's truly a part family drama-part mystery novel.

Thoroughly

First-time published author Charlene Bell Dietz does an amazing job at creating interesting characters. She creates intrigue and humor throughout this fun read. You leave the story happy you met the participants, cheering for the wins, and growling at the villains. Beth's journey from put upon to fulfilled is delightful. Kathleen's character is one we all want to sit and talk to for hours on end. The relationship built between the two is heart warming. A must read for a lazy summer day!

I met the author at a conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She was on a couple of panels and was a presenter. I found her very informative and entertaining. I decided to check out her mystery series, the first is titled The Flapper, The Scientist and The Saboteur.
I love mysteries and have always admired mystery writers for their ability to tie everything up in a sensible way all while keeping me turning the pages long into the night.
Beth, Harold, and Kathleen are a remarkable trio that invite

Beth Armstrong is a research scientist in Denver where they test lab-rats for drug companies. Someone is sabotaging her project, but she can’t seem to get anyone to believe her, not even her husband. Then we have her aging Aunt Kathleen who is forced into moving into Beth’s house when her own house burns down. Kathleen has health problems but sits around drinking and smoking and telling stories of her flapper days back in the 1920s. Last of all there is Harold, Beth’s husband, who keeps everyone ...more

There are three stories happening at the same time in this novel, plus one character's backstory that heavily impacts the modern day plot. You might think that would muddy the story, but Dietz manages to make the plot lines flow smoothly. At stake are the futures of a marriage, a research laboratory, and an elderly family member. This doesn't fit the formula of the typical amateur sleuth mystery, which is refreshing. The Flapper, the Scientist, and the Saboteur is part family drama and part myst ...more

Such a fun read! This story has everything I love in a book. The characters are well developed yet evolve as they wind through the page-turning mystery. There is laughter, love, inspiration and heartbreak, all wrapped up with a satisfying ending. I'd love to meet these characters again in another book. Definitely a recommended read!
