please post them here. :)

Vero (vero_river) | 7 comments Hah - I have the first one ready!

I wanted to personalize more and add a "about me" section on my blog. Guess what, it's like three clicks...

Go to "Settings" - click on the tab "pages" - click on "Add page" and name the page and insert the address (very simple and an example is provided :-) - and then you can start writing. Save it in the end and you have a little "profile"/"About me"/"What I always wanted to say"/"why bananas rock" or whatever page added.

And now that I am writing this, I realize that I can add other pages, too. Hah. Like not book related. Or different posts for different topics...
Need to have a think...

It's about a tool to customize your CSS without knowing anything about HTML

Chrissie How do I add my blog/profile picture. I assume you go to settings, but when I clicked on photo and used the browse to find the picture I wanted ( the same as here on GR) there was no place to say yes/OK.

I am stumped!

message 6: by Sharon (new)

Sharon L (sharon_l) | 19 comments you go to setting and choose the pic then you do save if I remember correctly.

You go to pages (you can add a new page or edit the existing one)

Either way you end up with an adding window. Below it there's a button for adding photos.
(link to the picture because it won't be big enough in this window)

You can also just simply copy and paste it (like in word) and it will work.

★ʜɑʋɘɳ★ (_-haven-_) | 1 comments Does BookLikes have some kind of book browsing system? Like GR's exploration of genres?

This does not work. Please explain more fully, step by step.

Dan Schwent (akagunslinger) So does the import process convert reviews to blog posts?

message 11: by Sharon (new)

Sharon L (sharon_l) | 19 comments Dan wrote: "So does the import process convert reviews to blog posts?"

Sort of. It's a review of the book that appears like a blog post on your time line. GIFs and spoiler tags, links, and fonts do not get imported. You'll have to edit.

message 12: by Dan (new)

Dan Schwent (akagunslinger) Huh. Anyone know where I can hire some orphans to reformat 950 reviews for me?

message 13: by Kalliope (new)

Kalliope I'm finding BL very confusing with the difference between Followers and Friends.. I am getting lots of Followers notifications and I only recognize a small percentage from GR.. can people who migrate include some kind of reference so that we can match personalities?

thank you.

❤Ninja Bunneh❤ (bluangel) Keeping your profile pic the same as here helps. That's how I'm recognizing people. And if the have the goodreads link on there blog I kind of know they're from here.

thank you. i have kept the photo.. I shall add the link to GR.

❤Ninja Bunneh❤ (bluangel) You're welcome. :)

❤Ninja Bunneh❤ (bluangel) I have a really, probably moronic, question. How can I get my profile picture to fit the circle? It looks kind of awful. I knew how to do it on tumblr years ago but I'm clueless here.

message 19: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) Does anyone know how to put on my own background? My html knowledge is limited to bold, spoilers and adding a link. Help would be appreciated.

message 20: by Chrissie (last edited Sep 26, 2013 06:26AM) (new)

Chrissie Wouldn't it be nice if we all share what we learn how to do at Book Likes? Please explain things very simply!

I can tell you how to add your photo to your profile/blog. I got instructions from Booklikes!

Go your blog page dashboard and on the right at the top is the little "settings thing-a-ma-jig" which you should click on. Then click on the "general" tab. Click on "change picture". Then click on "browse". When you have the picture you want on the screen, you have to drag it over to the "file box". There is NO place to say OK!!!! Then you click on "open". Who would have guessed!!! It worked for me.

Another thing I have learned is that when you import, and it does take several days, you do not need to leave your computer on. You can turn everything off!

We can all help each other!

There's this, which explains CSS: http://sunny.booklikes.com/post/22703...

If you look around BL, you can also find posts about how to fix your HTML to move things around, how to make your background static (simple, that one) and other great tools.

message 22: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) I looked at that link, thanks Sandra. I did try that extension on Chrome for a while but it didn't work reliably at all. I am going to need someone to nanny me through the whole thing or ask them to do it completely. I have a nice background I painted years ago and I like the opportunity of using it again.

message 23: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) How to export your books from GR to BL - go here http://www.goodreads.com/review/import save the file, don't open it. Go to BookLikes Import tab, upload the same file. It will do it all automatically but it takes a w-h-i-l-e. It's been three days for me so far...

Do you have to leave the computer on all the time or will BL continue importing when I switch my computer off and then on again later? BL tells me that it will take almost 40 hours to import all my books and that's only for the first half of them...

message 25: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) You can turn the computer off. I think they might be deluged with people opening accounts.

message 26: by Jelle (new)

Jelle (herfst) Any reason to switch that I'm not getting? I tried some other booksites before Goodreads where I didn't really settle, but this one looks extremely similar to Goodreads.

message 27: by AH (new)

AH You can also reblog other people's instructions so that they appear on your page for reference later.

message 28: by Mosca (new)

Mosca | 4 comments Hello, folks.

Thank you, Petra X, for the heads up posting at the Hidden Reviews site; and putting the word out.

I'm still exhausted from the mostly-complete, moving-van odyssey involved in my copying content over to LibraryThing a number of months back. Not sorry; but exhausted.

I've joined this group so I may keep in touch. But I've not yet joined Booklikes--mostly from unfamiliarity, uncertainty, and exhaustion.

This group seems a good place for me to observe, participate, and decide.

But thank you Petra X and Sharon for the Group!

AH AH wrote: "You can also reblog other people's instructions so that they appear on your page for reference later."

Oh, the only thing I don't like about the reblog feature is that you reblog someone else's reblog - the original poster doesn't get credit. I'm adding a comment why I reblogged because it kind of seems like I am copying the work, not highlighting it because I like it, if you get my drift.

message 30: by Dan (new)

Dan Schwent (akagunslinger) Is there a way to send people private messages or an email link or something?

message 31: by AH (new)

AH Dan wrote: "Is there a way to send people private messages or an email link or something?"

On that note, it would be nice to send an email when you follow someone just to say hi, it's me, we were friends on GR.

what?

And when I can I try to give credit to the original blogger.

message 36: by AH (new)

AH If you go to your friends page and click on Booklikes, there is a message that they are going offline for 30 min. (not sure what CET time is).

message 37: by Sharon (new)

Sharon L (sharon_l) | 19 comments Wow, they are really nice!

message 38: by AnnaLund (new)

AnnaLund | 33 comments the crew at booklikes have said that they are looking into both creating groups and private messaging, and fixing the reblog feature so that the original poster gets due credit. they are super-quick on the uptake and are working like madmen and women with the influx of people.

If you have ANY problems, try their customer service enquiries... wow.

just.
wow.

It's amazing, right? How is it that people don't understand the power of customer service?

On another topic: does anyone know how to order the books that appear on their shelves? Like to have a specific shelf the the "front page" shelf? I can resort, but I can't seem to get it to show what I want and right now it seems that all the stuff I don't want to read or weird summer reading books from 1985 are popping up first.

message 40: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) I don't know much yet, but I do know that Book Likes is being very helpful and competent.

I messed up my automatic imports. I have more than one .cvs file. I asked them to delete all my books so I could start over. They did, promptly, and they emailed me to tell me when it was done. Many of my shelves remain but that's okay. In fact, I wish they were all there. I might add the rest of them in the next few weeks, if I can without books, but I haven't decided whether to import books. I have SO many and manually importing is the only way not to lose books/book data.

message 41: by Krazykiwi (new)

Krazykiwi | 54 comments I'm going to write a proper tutorial over there later, once I've figured out all the css that needs to be customized. But assuming you have a) a nice picture that is reasonably big to use as a background b) it's pretty dark, so the default font colours work, then you can set a background and fix it so it doesn't scroll or tile with the following steps:

1. Go to Settings -> Blog, and choose customize. Pick the third (I think) template: The one with the dark wood background.
2. Scroll all the way down on the left hand side to "upload picture" and choose your picture from your computer, and press upload - it should update the preview as soon as it's done, if not press save
3. Add the following to the "custom css" box

body {background-repeat: no-repeat;
background-attachment:fixed;}

Press save and you are done.

(As I mentioned, if your picture is pretty light, the font colours may not work too well, because the comments display in white directly on the background, I'm working on figuring all the configurable font colours out :)

CET: Central European Time. GMT +1. US east coast (where I am) is, I believe, GMT -5, so their offline was early in the morning for me (if I read their post right).

message 43: by Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (last edited Sep 26, 2013 09:55AM) (new)

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 231 comments Ordering shelves.

On the "shelf" page, there is a row "sort by: add date," etc. Hit the arrows next to the different options listed. You can sort by when you added the book, when you read it, alphabetical by author, alphabetical by title, or by rating. I've played with it a little.

ETA: Don't know how to do a "front page" shelf though. (Like "favorites" here, I guess you mean.) To narrow it down to what I want, I use the tags and hit the shelf for that tag. And then sort if that tag is getting large.

message 44: by Anne (new)

Anne God. I don't wanna move from GR. Feels like I've been here forever! But it's looking like this may be the only way to save your reviews and shelves. Blech.
Thanks for all of the great tips on how to get the process started!

AnnaLund | 33 comments Cornelia (Merry Meerkat Marginalia) wrote: "Question, does GR sync with Booklikes? Or will I have to occasionally re import everything? I can't do everything at two places. I don't want to leave goodreads but if this continues, I'll have too"

This is a concern I have, too. You can export your data from GR, but I haven't found how to do the same from Booklikes? (Just thinking ahead here, in case one would need to retrieve one's data AGAIN...)

What I write on Booklikes gets posted also on goodreads (if I connect it), but not the other way around.

maybe we can ask them to fix this?

message 46: by Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (last edited Sep 26, 2013 10:22AM) (new)

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 231 comments Yes, you can synch them. It's under settings. Default is off, you can turn it on by hitting "connect" under the "import" tab. It's the one on the right top of the page.

message 47: by Shanna (new)

Shanna (snowie) | 8 comments It's supposed to sync, but I've yet to see it but they are swamped with imports right now so I'm assuming that is the reason it's not done my syncs yet.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 231 comments The text under synchronization connect suggests it goes both ways.

message 49: by Tracey (new)

Tracey (stewartry) Cornelia (Merry Meerkat Marginalia) wrote: "Question, does GR sync with Booklikes? "

They do sync up - go to settings and import and there's a button.

Yeah, I suspect their servers are a bit overwhelmed with GR refugees at the moment!
