Tips and things about BookLikes

I wanted to personalize more and add a "about me" section on my blog. Guess what, it's like three clicks...
Go to "Settings" - click on the tab "pages" - click on "Add page" and name the page and insert the address (very simple and an example is provided :-) - and then you can start writing. Save it in the end and you have a little "profile"/"About me"/"What I always wanted to say"/"why bananas rock" or whatever page added.
And now that I am writing this, I realize that I can add other pages, too. Hah. Like not book related. Or different posts for different topics...
Need to have a think...

It's about a tool to customize your CSS without knowing anything about HTML

I am stumped!

You go to pages (you can add a new page or edit the existing one)
Either way you end up with an adding window. Below it there's a button for adding photos.
(link to the picture because it won't be big enough in this window)

You can also just simply copy and paste it (like in word) and it will work.

This does not work. Please explain more fully, step by step.

Sort of. It's a review of the book that appears like a blog post on your time line. GIFs and spoiler tags, links, and fonts do not get imported. You'll have to edit.

thank you.

thank you. i have kept the photo.. I shall add the link to GR.

I can tell you how to add your photo to your profile/blog. I got instructions from Booklikes!
Go your blog page dashboard and on the right at the top is the little "settings thing-a-ma-jig" which you should click on. Then click on the "general" tab. Click on "change picture". Then click on "browse". When you have the picture you want on the screen, you have to drag it over to the "file box". There is NO place to say OK!!!! Then you click on "open". Who would have guessed!!! It worked for me.
Another thing I have learned is that when you import, and it does take several days, you do not need to leave your computer on. You can turn everything off!
We can all help each other!

There's this, which explains CSS: http://sunny.booklikes.com/post/22703...
If you look around BL, you can also find posts about how to fix your HTML to move things around, how to make your background static (simple, that one) and other great tools.

Do you have to leave the computer on all the time or will BL continue importing when I switch my computer off and then on again later? BL tells me that it will take almost 40 hours to import all my books and that's only for the first half of them...

Thank you, Petra X, for the heads up posting at the Hidden Reviews site; and putting the word out.
I'm still exhausted from the mostly-complete, moving-van odyssey involved in my copying content over to LibraryThing a number of months back. Not sorry; but exhausted.
I've joined this group so I may keep in touch. But I've not yet joined Booklikes--mostly from unfamiliarity, uncertainty, and exhaustion.
This group seems a good place for me to observe, participate, and decide.
But thank you Petra X and Sharon for the Group!

Oh, the only thing I don't like about the reblog feature is that you reblog someone else's reblog - the original poster doesn't get credit. I'm adding a comment why I reblogged because it kind of seems like I am copying the work, not highlighting it because I like it, if you get my drift.

On that note, it would be nice to send an email when you follow someone just to say hi, it's me, we were friends on GR.

Oh, the only thing I don't like about the reblog feature is that you reblog someon..."
Yeah, I feel the same.

Oh, the only thing I don't like about the reblog feature is that you re..."
I try to remember to add a comment why I reblogged.

what?
And when I can I try to give credit to the original blogger.

If you have ANY problems, try their customer service enquiries... wow.
just.
wow.

It's amazing, right? How is it that people don't understand the power of customer service?
On another topic: does anyone know how to order the books that appear on their shelves? Like to have a specific shelf the the "front page" shelf? I can resort, but I can't seem to get it to show what I want and right now it seems that all the stuff I don't want to read or weird summer reading books from 1985 are popping up first.

I messed up my automatic imports. I have more than one .cvs file. I asked them to delete all my books so I could start over. They did, promptly, and they emailed me to tell me when it was done. Many of my shelves remain but that's okay. In fact, I wish they were all there. I might add the rest of them in the next few weeks, if I can without books, but I haven't decided whether to import books. I have SO many and manually importing is the only way not to lose books/book data.

1. Go to Settings -> Blog, and choose customize. Pick the third (I think) template: The one with the dark wood background.
2. Scroll all the way down on the left hand side to "upload picture" and choose your picture from your computer, and press upload - it should update the preview as soon as it's done, if not press save
3. Add the following to the "custom css" box
body {background-repeat: no-repeat;
background-attachment:fixed;}
Press save and you are done.
(As I mentioned, if your picture is pretty light, the font colours may not work too well, because the comments display in white directly on the background, I'm working on figuring all the configurable font colours out :)

CET: Central European Time. GMT +1. US east coast (where I am) is, I believe, GMT -5, so their offline was early in the morning for me (if I read their post right).

On the "shelf" page, there is a row "sort by: add date," etc. Hit the arrows next to the different options listed. You can sort by when you added the book, when you read it, alphabetical by author, alphabetical by title, or by rating. I've played with it a little.
ETA: Don't know how to do a "front page" shelf though. (Like "favorites" here, I guess you mean.) To narrow it down to what I want, I use the tags and hit the shelf for that tag. And then sort if that tag is getting large.

Thanks for all of the great tips on how to get the process started!

This is a concern I have, too. You can export your data from GR, but I haven't found how to do the same from Booklikes? (Just thinking ahead here, in case one would need to retrieve one's data AGAIN...)
What I write on Booklikes gets posted also on goodreads (if I connect it), but not the other way around.
maybe we can ask them to fix this?

They do sync up - go to settings and import and there's a button.
