Tim Edison It's a good question : do you persist with a book you are not enjoying or give up and start reading something else?

My motto is: there are too many good books out there to continue reading one you're not enjoying. So if it's not "grabbing" you in an entertaining way, put it to one side. Maybe you'll go back to it - maybe you won't:) Just my opinion for what it's worth Time:)

You're quite right Mary. It's a real shame; but I guess we are fortunate in that others have written great works on the same and similar topics. Have you read On Radji Beach by Ian W. Shaw? An absolutely brilliant book - my review if you're interested. https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I had not heard of that book, Brenda. Thanks for the recommendation - I've put the title on my TBR list. A very interesting review, and one that I will follow up.

One of the most interesting and enjoyable works I've read about the Australian women volunteering overseas in WW1 is a YA novel by Jackie French entitled A Rose for the ANZAC Boys. Beautifully written, immediately accessible for a wide readership, it opened my eyes to the remarkable achievements of some women at the war. Of course, the literary critics would never acknowledge Jackie French in the same way they would valorise Thomas Keneally, but there's no doubt whose book has made the greater impression on me!

MaryG2E (goodreadscommaryg2e) | 934 comments I've just picked up my 'book-in-waiting', The Bush by Don Watson. Such a huge contrast to the Keneally pile of doo-doo, Watson's beautifully composed sentences are rolling off the page and into my brain. I rejoice!

Why indeed! Cloudstreet didn't have any quotation marks for speech either. I agree, It does feel like a chore, plus I find it hard to really engage with the characters.

Currently reading Dying Light by Stuart MacBride and burst out laughing!
DS Logan McRae has arrived at the morgue at 1am - can't find any (living) people until he finds a young woman in an office; feet propped on the desk, back to the door, reading a Stephen King novel with headphones in. McRae tapped her on the shoulder... her explosive reaction was hilarious even though it was expected!! lol

Stef Rozitis Friends keep giving me books and I can;t keep up or read fast enough!

At the moment I am just over half-way through Nights at the Circus by Angela Carter Complicated in theme but easy and enjoyable to read. Dark but joyous. It's going to be one that will be hard work to review!

That's happening to me too. Children's picture books keep popping up in between mysteries and thrillers.

I'm starting this soon too, Carolyn - hopefully sometime this month. My only concern is that I'll never look at Noosa and Noosaville in the same way again! How tragic it would be if next time I go up to stay at Noosaville I'm too traumatised to walk around the corner to the yummy gelateria at 8pm to get some gelato!!

message 14937: by Neko (new)

Neko I'm kinda finding it hard to get through The Rosie Effect not because I don't enjoy it (I do!) but it's nothing like his first novel which I devoured.

I'm also reading A Long Way Home because I've only been able to take The Rosie Effect in little doses. It's pretty cool and partly set in Tasmania too.

P.A. Fenton (pfenton) | 13 comments I'm currently reading John Birmingham's Dave vs the Monsters trilogy. Specifically Dave vs. the Monsters: Resistance. The second wasn't as good as the first, but I'm hopeful it's a case of middle book syndrome. It's becoming a bit of a guilty pleasure. Quite a way removed from He Died With A Felafel In His Hand!

Just finished Promise Marianne and it was very good. He's a great writer and his serial killer is truly creepy and his retired detective very resourceful. Dead Girl Sing came as a bundle with Promise so I hope to get to it ASAP!
