Thanks, Julie:) I'm doing the weeding, then I'll sugarcane mulch. Should say I'm watching the weeds grow atm. I bought this house thinking how much DH would love the huge garden. A rude awakening when reality hit and I only have one set of hands:(

I've had a 'slug' of a winter, flat and uninspired a little more than prior winters. I need one of those special lamps.

MaryG2E (goodreadscommaryg2e) | 934 comments Mid-way through the Quarterly Readathon, on Saturday evening, I've just finished The Wedding Proposal by Sue Moorcroft. I really enjoyed it. It is a contemporary novel - a mix of romance/chick lit/family relations. Well-written, very entertaining. I'm not going to write a proper review because I need to press on with the next novel for the marathon Readathon, A Beautiful Blue Death by Charles Finch. Happy reading everyone.

MaryG2E (goodreadscommaryg2e) | 934 comments I've been struggling to get through The Daughters of Mars by Thomas Keneally for quite a few days now. I have huge respect for Keneally, having enjoyed several other novels by him, but...this one defeats me. Mainly due to the weird sentence structures and the absence of quotation marks for speech. I'm really disappointed that I did not get more pages read for the Read-a-thon just completed, but I find this book very hard to plough through. It's been on my TBR list for ages, and is a key text for my 2015 Personal Challenge, which is to read a number of modern books about Australians at war. Curious to know if anyone else has read it and had trouble with it.

I may just give up on it too Dale. Life is too short to be stuck reading crappy books, particularly when there are so many, many more just waiting to be read.

My son and I went to see him after his release of this book, and the audience was quite large. One of the readers asked him why he didn't put speech marks in it and he was very evasive about it in his answer. Then I'm afraid quite a few proceeded to tell him it was extremely difficult to read, and others couldn't get through it etc. That's one of the main reasons I've never desired to read it:)

I really don't understand why they do it. It really doesn't add anything to the writing, except make it harder for people to read and enjoy.

On another note - as a writer, I know that if I submitted a manuscript to a publisher with no punctuation or speech marks it probably wouldn't be taken seriously. Makes you wonder...

Ryan I first encountered it in Blood Meridian, or the Evening Redness in the West and it was frustrating at first. However it must have had the desired effect because I gave the book five stars. Apparently Cormac McCarthy writes all his books like that.

Tim Edison I am currently in Sihanoukville, Cambodia. I found a little 2nd hand bookstore and bought "Invisible Man" by Ralph Ellison for $2 and "Johnny Got His Gun" by Dalton Trumbo for $3. I can't wait to start reading them. I am also reading Shadowland by Peter Straub but not really enjoying it that much.

Very interesting information Brenda. I think what peeves me the most is that this is an important topic - the fairly recent acknowledgement of the tremendous efforts of Australian women as nurses and other support workers overseas in WW1. Adds a whole new dimension to the official history of Australians at war, a la C.E.W. Bean et al. Indeed Keneally alludes to this entrenched sexism levelled at the nurses with his character, the truly ghastly colonel in charge of the hospital on Lemnos where Sally, Naomi and the other women arrive after the sinking of their ship. So I think Keneally could have done a greater service to the memory of those women who were the unsung heroes of Gallipoli and the Western Front by writing a decent book that is readable, and able to be appreciated by a wide audience.
