I've just turned the last page (sadly) to Helene Young's latest - Northern Heat. Gripping, filled with suspense; a definite 5★s from me. I'll post my review on the embargo date of 27th May:)

Am halfway through an early Ruth Rendell mystery - The Best Man to Die - and have just learned the prolific author passed away over the weekend. Her characters were fabulous and full of flaws and she knew how to spin a yarn. Vale Ms Rendell, your work will not be forgotten.

Yes reading [book:Life After Life|15790842]prepares you a little for what happens in A God in Ruins. They are separate books but that have something in common. I was glad I read them in order.

I thought I'd lost it, who knows what happened, but I had that sinking feeling. I just kept arrowing back and found it! She's very readable isn't she? I'm just not sure on the D.D aspect.. I feel she has so very little to do with it? Time will tell ;)

I have just finished the tenth Isabel Dalhousie book. Reading in took me back to a visit from a Scottish lady. When I was showing her my library, we remarked on Alexander McCall Smith's books and I mentioned Isabel Dalhousie. She corrected my pronunciation: I should be saying Dull- Hoosie.
Similarly, when on our last holiday in USA, the rally organisers had us in a small American town with a square and a yarn shop. I said I felt like I was in the middle of Debbie Macomber book (apparently the desired effect), and I was told Maay-Comber
I wonder what else I'm mispronouncing in my head....

That is interesting, Marianne. I was pronouncing Dalhousie very wrong, but May-Comber is almost how I was pronouncing it? I think I was saying Muh-comb-er with the emphasis on the second syllable. Or do you mean the "b" is actually pronounced? How were you saying it? I haven't read any of her books - maybe I should put one on my list...

I started Nothing to Envy: Ordinary Lives in North Korea by Barbara Demick the other day. It's a bleak insight into life in North Korea - it's unbelievable that there is such a disparity between North Korea and the rest of the world - and that so far the various leaders have gotten away with it!!

No, Kathryn, the emphasis was on the May. I always said it more like muh or ma, with the emphasis on the com, so they didn't even know at first who I was talking about! LOL

Interesting. Of course, we might have had a better idea if we listened to one of her books, provided the narrator got it right! Listening to books with strange names is always interesting - then you know how to say them, but not how to spell them!

However, even narrators say words wrong sometimes. I think it was the audiobook I'm listening to at the moment - Angel Puss - which used the word "unassuaged" which I believe is pronounced "un-a-swayjed", but the narrator said "un-a-su-ajed" - it took me a fraction of a second longer than it should have to work out what she meant!

I think you believe right! She obviously didn't know what the word was!
I do know that I am better at deciphering what non-English speakers are trying to say when they speak English, because I just think, what would my mum or dad be trying to say if they said that. English is a very difficult language to learn, and many non-English speakers make the same pronunciation errors.

But one word that used to get me all the time is misled, which for some reason I was not seeing as miss-led but as one word, something I was saying like my-zld. I had to train myself to say this properly. Not really sure what I thought it meant..... LOL

English is definitely a nasty language to learn as a second language - and even with tricks for those of us who speak it as a first (or only!) language.

I've never seen that with misled before (and now I'm sure I'll think about that each time I see it!), however I know there are some words I have to think twice about saying, because I intuitively want to say them the wrong way. I just can't think which ones they are at the moment!!

Many of the electronic dictionaries now have a little radio button above the meaning which you can press to listen to the sound of the word being pronounced out loud. Interesting about 'misled' Marianne as I used it to check for and example and it wouldn't write misled, instead it changes to mislead and pronounces it mis-lead as in lead the way, not mis-led. Admittedly it was an American accent speaking so??

Lol Yes, the English language can get very confusing. (I was just surprised that the dictionary didn't cater to all forms of the word.)

Isn't it interesting that I can say "I am going to read Book A" and "I have already read Book B" but I can't say "I have lead someone astray" because it should be "I have led someone astray"!! And yet, if I am writing with a pencil, I sometimes need to sharpen the lead!!!

I do think English is officially a crazy language!
