Jodez (jodez4) | 30 comments Finished The War of the Worlds today, no review yet, hopefully tomorrow.

Started Coraline, love Gaiman, loved the movie, liking what I've read so far (now to get rid of this migraine so I can keep reading...)

and further to my post about similar things in consecutive books, my current read, One Life My Mother's Story by Kate Grenville also mentions the dangers of being discovered to be homosexual in the first half of the 20th century.

Jülie ☼♄  (jlie) | 6581 comments Finished Cold Grave by Kathryn Fox last night and have to say I am a bit disappointed in it...I gave it 3*s because it was just ok, but definately not up to the standard I have come to expect from her.
Will have to think a bit before reviewing it..

Am now reading The Rosie Effect by Graeme Simsion, my 4th and final choice for the March challenge ;)

I agree with Jools, Cold Grave was only a 3★ for me too. Doing it as a buddy read made it more enjoyable but it wasn't as good as the previous ones in the series. Never really got going. Too many themes perhaps, none of them well developed and too many facts and figures being shoved at us.

It's still worthwhile reading the book Suzanne, if you liked the movie. They managed to capture every important scene (or year) in the movie, but naturally the scenes were in-depth and longer in the book.

Jülie ☼♄  (jlie) | 6581 comments Finished my Buddy read with Carolyn: Cold Grave by Kathryn Fox

This is the 6th book in the Anya Crichton series, all of which we have so far read, with #7 waiting on the shelf to be read later in the year.
Sadly I could only give this one 3*s and was a bit disappointed in it, compared to the previous 5 books.
*its always great fun doing a Buddy read though and made it more bearable ;)

message 13222: by Sally (new)

Sally Howes | 223 comments Incantation of Frida K. by the brilliant Kate Braverman affected me so deeply that it has taken me a while to process my thoughts and feelings about it enough to write a proper review, but here it is:

https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Of the forty-odd reviews I've written, this one may be the one that means the most to me. This extraordinarily beautiful book still has the power to bring tears to my eyes just from thinking about it - not sad tears, grateful tears for a story so beautiful and so profoundly resonant with my own. 5★s are woefully inadequate here.

I frequently get turned off books by silly names. Some authors go a bit crazy when they name their characters:)

I agree Dale. It's funny what they come up with. But rarely do we see 'plain Jane' names anymore! I really do like different, but not crazy.
