Tango | 290 comments I finished The Witches of Eastwick this morning. John Updike is very easy to read and the story is quite witty if a little pointless.

MaryG2E (goodreadscommaryg2e) | 934 comments I've just started A Sight For Sore Eyes by Ruth Rendell as an easy read for the weekend Read-a-thon. Lined up a couple more mysteries that are my usual fodder, in order to get my page count up - gotta keep up the good work for the Aussie Readers!! :-D

Jodez (jodez4) | 30 comments Finished reading A Clockwork Orange last weekend, took me a while to get used to the slang. Didn't enjoy it, really don't understand the fascination with it.

Started The War of the Worlds but it's slow going trying to get used to the regular 'non-slang' text again... Enjoying it so far though!

Sarah wrote: "Me and Stephen King... I was actually curious to see what you would think. :)"

Do you mean you don't like any of his books or just this one in particular? I know lots of his fans hated it but i found it quite harmless. Maybe not his usual thing - but then he has quite a few different styles.

message 13072: by Sally906 (new)

Sally906 | 87 comments I was reading recently that Stephen King had such a problem with drugs and alcohol during the 80s that he cannot remember writing or having published. Not a fan of him myself - but I found that snippet interesting. Apparently his wife did an intervention in the late 80s and he writers block for 2 years - she would sit with him and force him to write something - even if it was "today I saw a tree". That's why he has written any horror stories recently as in his drug and alcohol crazed early days.

message 13073: by Sally906 (new)

Sally906 | 87 comments I stopped reading The Spider King's Daughter - was just unrelentingly cruelty and I am just not in the frame of mind to put up with that. So became a DNF

As it was earmarked for my Autumn challenge I had to find another book set in a hot climate- so picked up a memoir by an Australian author - A House in Fez: Building a Life in the Ancient Heart of Morocco by Suzanna Clarke. Much happier with this one :)

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) Started on Watership Down, been a long time coming. One of my favourite movies, enjoying the book thus far.

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) Liam wrote: "Started on Watership Down, been a long time coming. One of my favourite movies, enjoying the book thus far."

From Wikipedia:
Watership Down inspired the creation of Bunnies & Burrows, a role-playing game centred around talking rabbits, published in 1976 by Fantasy Games Unlimited. It introduced several innovations to role-playing game design, being the first game to allow players to have non-humanoid roles, as well as the first with detailed martial arts and skill systems. Fantasy Games Unlimited published a second edition of the game in 1982, and the game was modified and republished by Steve Jackson Games as an official GURPS supplement in 1992.

A good solid post-WWI historical fiction; writing is as smooth as silk and the storyline hold it's own. 3★

True, true, true, Brenda. My sister forced the book on me:( Apart from Vicki's novels, I tend to avoid read that genre. I hate to mark a book with a low rating because I don't like the genre (not fair to the author, I think) so I tend to avoid them.

Gave it 4 stars and really enjoyed it. I was surprised to find it had a lot of lukewarm reviews. Funny how we all like different things! But at least it made me feel better about some of my own less-complimentary reviews.
