Alik I've only 80 pages left to go in The Girl On The Train and I have no inkling at all "whodunnit". Usually by now I at least have a theory but I have nothing!

Jülie ☼♄  (jlie) | 6581 comments Just finished Runaway Lies by Shannon Curtis. This was a real surprise! I wasn't expecting anything like it and have to admit that awful sin of being swayed by the cover...which inmo is ok, but doesn't do anything for the book. 5*s

MaryG2E (goodreadscommaryg2e) | 934 comments I've just finished reading The Fault in Our Stars by John Green and was deeply moved by it. One of the best books I've read for ages. I think I'll buy a copy, as this library book must be returned soon. John Green's ideas need to be re-read more than once. 5+ ★s

Ladies, I watched One Day last night, and, like you all said, it was equally amazing.

@Andrea, Anne Hathaway was what I imagine her to be in the book and she didn't disappoint. Jim Sturgess - OH he was Fabulous, with a capital "F" and so handsome too - now I understand what you mean. His breakdown(s) was very moving and intense in the movies :)

message 13162: by Marianne (new)

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9975 comments Mish, so glad you enjoyed it as much as we did!
No movie can be the same as the book, but in this one, the film maker kept the spirit extremely well.
I might just have to borrow it again.....

Sally906 | 87 comments I am having a reading crisis - the two books I've started this weekend are both fabulous want to sit down and read without stopping books. Possibly not going to be around much as I read:

The Road to Hope by Rachael Johns The Road to Hope by Rachael Johns (Rural Romance)

And

The Last Place by Michael Adams The Last Place by Michael Adams (YA Dystopean)

message 13166: by Kerrie (new)

Kerrie Paterson | 50 comments I just finished reading Book Lover by Jennifer Kaufman and Karen Mack. Also called Literacy and Longing in LA.
Literacy and Longing in L.A.
I was left kind of meh at the end. It had a great premise - love in a bookshop :) And it was interesting the way they included quotes from books and footnotes in the text. By the end I felt a bit like it was trying too hard to impress me with literary works. I really didn't like the heroine to start with - she was rich and a snob - but I persevered. I'm not sure why I persevered to be honest - I'm usually quick to put a book down if I don't like the characters. Something kept me reading. She did definitely redeem herself toward the end, but the guy you thought the whole book was the hero, suddenly became a complete jerk. And then the end seemed to fizzle out with an unsatisfactory epilogue tucked on the end.

Now I'm swapping back to one of the others I have on the go - Girl 43 by Maree Giles. Girl 43 It's fiction based on the Parramatta Girls' Home in Sydney, so not an overly light read :)

MaryG2E (goodreadscommaryg2e) | 934 comments I recently finished The Vault by Ruth Rendell. It was a true DUD! I don't know why I battled on til the end, because I had lost interest pretty early on. I guess I persevered because I did, ultimately, want to know 'whodunnit'.

I read this book when it was first released about 10 years ago. It was quite a revelation. She came from a happy, middle class home, was well-educated, had every opportunity, but the addiction overruled everything. When she wrote the memoir, she had cleaned up and was working as a journalist for the Melbourne Age

Phew - that's a relief! I remember when the movie was being made there was such an outcry over the casting of Anne Hathaway in that role, but honestly I can't imagine either of the leads being played by anyone else.

Now we wait patiently for the movie of Us...

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) I've finished A Good American by Alex George; a family saga about German immigrants in USA from 1904 thru to modern day times. Good solid writing with lots of interesting twists and turns in the plot. 3.50★

Started The Chaperone by Laura Moriarty

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9975 comments Finished and very much enjoyed The Girl On The Landing by Paul Torday who, sad to say, died in December 2013. He only wrote seven full length novels, Salmon Fishing In The Yemen being the first of those, each in a different genre (he was trying to find the "ultimate" novel). I've read 3 so far, so still have 4 and two novellas to enjoy.

Oh, Marina, I love anything by Maggie O'Farrell! If you like this one, the two that follow My Lover's Lover and The Distance Between Us are (very loosely) linked by characters to this one.
