I just finished a reread of The Color of Magic by Terry Pratchett and I enjoyed it so much.

I read that one a little while ago. My comment: Sorely in need of some judicious editing, especially 'commas'! While the historical content was interesting, for me, the story was slow and too fragmented to be seriously considered a good read.

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) Just what is everyone's definition of 'too wordy' in a novel? I keep seeing this crop up in various threads and groups.

Is it too much description, too much information or simply too many words used to describe the same thing?

No Susan, the silly name I am referring to is the main character, Christmas Livingstone, who owns the Chocolate Apothecary and yes, down believe in the medicinal properties of chocolate.

Too many words about the same thing. Or pages of waffle not relevant in any way. I don't mean too long - some of my favourite books are over 900 pages - but words that are wasting my reading time. It's hard to describe but I know it when I am reading it:) Usually I sit there with the book saying things like "Oh just get on with it"

Now Christmas Livingstone is a really silly name! Imagine the schoolyard teasing and vulgar jokes [shudder].

As for a shop called "The Chocolate Apothecary"... No, the whole thing sounds very hippy-dippy to me. The cover is pretty though!

Personally, I enjoy long descriptions of atmosphere, scenery etc, but only in the hands of a skilled writer. Otherwise, it's just annoying.

I guess my definition of "too wordy" is long sentences which I have to parse to figure out the meaning (then mentally get out my red pen and edit). Again, it's a matter of the writer's skill.

message 13358: by Sarah (new)

Sarah I agree about "too wordy" being long sentences. But I would also say sentences with a lot of big words or many many syllables. I like big words, but not when the author seems to be showing off their vocabulary rather than enhancing the story. I would bet that if it were analyzed, there would be an optimum number of syllables in a given sentence and anything over that would seem wordy.

On the other hand, I like Phrynne's "get on with it". Insomnia is a classic example for me. It could have been at least half the length and still been a good story.

Carolyn | 9840 comments I really enjoyed The Book of Lost and Found by Lucy Foley 5★

It was a different sort of love story - I think a few others have commented here on how much they enjoyed it.

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) I finished Temptation by Douglas Kennedy; it's a solid 3.5★ read. Started The Pursuit of Happiness y the same author. Both these books are re-reads for me.

You'll be busy prioritising when you get home Brenda! Did you take a mixture of hard copy and e-reader on holidays, or just e-reader?

message 13378: by Alik (new)

Alik Thank you Marianne for ordering in A Man Called Ove from our local library. I have just finished reading it and it was by far the best read of 2015 for me to date. It will take a very special book to surpass this one as my favourite read for the year. I will be buying my own copy of this one!

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9975 comments Alik, you're very welcome. It's next on the list for me.

message 13380: by Sally906 (new)

Sally906 | 87 comments I have finished Not Quite Nice by actress Celia Imrie - and loved it - review not done yet but is Hen's lit at its best - Hen's lit is chick lit but with the more mature woman starring in it - LOL!!!

(going to be busy catching up with reviews over Easter- in between egg eating)

Now reading something completly different - Clade by James Bradley - brilliant piece of work dealing with one possible scenario of global warming. So well written and very easy to read yet making you very aware of what is going on.

Cassandra Page (cassandrapage) I'm currently listening to A Fistful of Charms by Kim Harrison on audiobook - love this series! And I just started The Intern by Gabrielle Tozer for the 2015 genre challenge.

message 13389: by Adele (new)

Adele Jones | 9 comments I am currently reading nothing (gasp!). Would really LIKE to be reading though (have a pretty impressive 'to read' pile) and am fixing to change that this long weekend. Fiction ...? Non-fiction ...? An old favourite or something new ...? Audio, paperback, or e-book ...? Something I can read with my daughter or a book for mature readers ...? (Thinking on this point I'll be catching some mummy/daughter time with 'Alice Miranda at School' by Jacqueline Harvey.) Love the world of opportunity literature opens up!

Sally906 | 87 comments I finished Clade last night - I really loved it - but not 100% happy with part of the ending scenario so it dropped back to 4 stars

I have now picked up The Chocolate Promise by Josephine Moon - I know a few of you have had a problem with the main characters name - Christmas - but the knowledge didn't bother me as I went to school with a girl with that name. But we all called her Chrissy - this character remains Christmas in full!!!

message 13400: by Sarah (new)

Sarah I started Madame Bovary, The Girl in the Road, and Wild Lavender today.

Serious book, fun book, audiobook :)
