Catherine Davison (cassthefiddler) I've just finished Nicholas Shakespeare's The Dancer Upstairs and have started Rivers of London which I'm hoping might be like Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere or Terry Pratchett's Discworld series. I didn't like Gone Girl at all, though the movie was ok, reading Gone Girl was an exercise in patience. Decided I won't read another of hers.

The Dancer Upstairs by Nicholas Shakespeare
Rivers of London: Body Work by Ben Aaronovitch

Gone Girl was the one that turned me off her writing too Catherine...

Suz | 4432 comments Today I finished The Alphabet Sisters by Monica McInerney . I need to tell everyone about it!! A wholehearted 5 stars from this happy reader. My next step is to recommend it to a few of my friends that haven't read it.

Actually I liked the movie of Chocolat better than the book, but maybe that's because I saw the movie first. I generally tend to prefer the first experience of something: first cover of a song I hear, first actor playing a particular role I see, that kind of thing.

M.C. Edwards (mcedwards) | 11 comments I am currently reading Knife of Dreams (Wheel of Time, #11) by Robert Jordan

I only recently discovered this series and everyone else seemed to have read it, so I got into it. I have really enjoyed it, though there have been some slow points in the series (the previous book crossroads of twilight being one of them)but overall I love it and this book is keeping a nice pace so far, though with the festive season I have been too busy to read as much as I would like.

I am reading this series oh so slowly on audio book. I was actually nearly at the end of Knife of Dreams when my audio went kaput. So now I am finishing it off by listening to it on my computer. The best books are the ones with the most Rand. The worst when we get too much Perrin. And his awful wife. (Forgive my spelling. The big problem with audio is never seeing the names written down.)

message 11913: by Ryan (new)

Ryan My biggest problem with audiobooks is when something makes me think and I realise two minutes later that I haven't been paying attention and have to run it back. Kills an iPod battery pretty quickly.

Oh Phrynne, I really liked Perrin but I only got to book 5. I've put them away for another time. Maybe when I retire. Audio would be excellent for how to pronounce some of the names. My son and I often had discussions on pronunciation.

I tend to not bother and just try to pick up the thread - otherwise I tend to accidentally press the button more than I intend when I'm rewinding or fast forwarding and end up back at the very beginning or the very end of the track - and when the track is annoyingly an hour long, as many of mine seem to be, I get frustrated very quickly trying to get back to where I was up to (or where I stopped listening)!

M.C. Edwards (mcedwards) | 11 comments I actually have a bit of a soft spot for Perrin, but I do look forward to the Mat and Rand chapters. One of my biggest issues is with the female characters, I really have trouble liking most of them, no matter how hard I try.

On and on the audio book chat, yeah I feel your pain. They are great for learning to pronounce names (it was awesome for the Silmarillion) but when you lose your place for reason and have to find where you were up to again, it can be infuriating.

I have a soft spot for Perrin, too :-) And Faile - I'm the ONLY person I know who really likes her, LOL! Phrynne is right that Jordan wasn't great at writing female characters, although I do like Min and Aviendha.

If you're up to Knife of Dreams now, you're in for a treat, the books just get better and better from there onwards :-) I've read/listened to the entire series, and am currently on my second go-round with it, entirely by audiobook this time, mainly because a good friend of mine just finished the final book and we have been discussing the series a lot. Wait until you guys read that final book, it makes all the hours and hours of time you've invested in the series SO worth it. It really is spectacular!

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) @Phrynne + @Sally for the ABC Labyrinth info. Great to have it on a station without adverts.

Finished The Visitors by Rebecca Mascull; 3.50★ I really liked the story but the first person present tense narration always detracts for me.

Started The Queen Of Four Kingdoms by Princess Michael of Kent.

Dana | 144 comments It's been a while since I have posted, I am not the fastest reader here so I have to sometimes avoid these forums to get through more reading, a tough choice but one that has to be made......

After reading Saving Wishes 5★ in late December couldn't wait to read the other books in the series, so I put my Summer Challenge on hold and read
Second Hearts4★
Sand Jewels4★
Storm Shells5★
Secret North4★
Silver Dawn4★
Star Promise4★

I really enjoyed this series and couldn't recommend it highly enough, I am happy to say Australian author G.J. Walker-Smith can add another smitten fan to her list.

All these books are worthy of a 5 star rating but I personally hold the 5 star rating dear to my heart, you have to jump high and through numerous dangerous and nearly impossible hoops to get one I am afraid.

Oh well done Dana!

message 11944: by Dana (new)

Dana | 144 comments Thanks Julie, I noticed you asked me on another thread if these books were all good, I will answer here because they are all listed and rated above.

If I had to pick one I liked the least it would have been Silver Dawn but only because it was about the characters I was least attached too, but I could not in truth say it was not good.
There were so many things I loved about the series, all the characters were likeable even if they weren't the most well behaved, the thread of the element of magic (not the fantasy type but the everyday type of magic like a beautiful dawn sky) was so prevalent it felt as if it crossed over into my world a bit ( god that sounds kooky hope you know what I mean). I am not good at explaining, I am sure you will love all these books. The surprise for me was how much I loved Secret North. It is probably better not to read that far ahead in the book blurbs though, it might ruin the surprise (which is why I didn't put the link). Hope you enjoy :)

It's not too spoilery. As you know, the book itself is full of spoilers anyway, starting as it does in the modern day. Plus everyone knows what happened on the Siam-Burma Railway.
