Deb Omnivorous Reader | 1929 comments I am reading The Gospel of Loki by Joanne Harris

I have to say I am underwhelmed and at page 220 out of 296 I don't expect it to improve. I think it would make a good YA story perhaps, or possibly a way into Norse mythology for people who find the actual sagas too hard to read.

I enjoyed the retelling of the norse gods in modern day when Neil Gaiman did it American Gods (American Gods, #1) by Neil Gaiman
so very much, there was so much twisted, amoral depth to the characters. Depth or character is completely lacking in all the gods within The Gospel unfortunately, it makes it a very bland repetitive read.

I am reading it for the Returns & Exchanges challenge (brilliant concept), and because a friend with similar book taste to me recommended it. Goodreads did too, in a way as a "people who read this, The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker also enjoyed The Gospel of Loki".

The Golem and the Jinni was an absolutely amazing book. Both books use mythic concepts or personalities but have nothing else in common to my mind.

I absolutely loved The Golem and the Jinni Deborah - it was a divine book!

Carolyn | 9840 comments I've started reading Solar by Ian McEwan and not enjoying it at all so far. The main character is a very unlikeable man and so far the story is boring. I'm hoping it will get better but it has mixed reviews.

Divine is a good word for it. That was one amazing book.

message 11858: by Ryan (new)

Ryan It's on my read list for this year. I got it for Christmas.

message 11859: by Sarah (new)

Sarah I'm reading The Thorn Birds, For Whom the Bell Tolls, and The Great Gatsby. I'm very tired and a bit unfocused, which is why there are three.

Marina Finlayson | 285 comments Hmmm. The Golem and the Jinni sounds right up my alley. I have to stop reading these threads before my TBR pile grows so large it achieves sentience!

I think you started just after me, and I'm only at about 20%. There's nothing wrong with it, but for me it's a bit 'putdownable' (i.e. to go and do something else). But if I spent less time on the computer, I'd probably have read a bit more of it.

Agree 100%

The pacing is slow, and the mood is all agony so far. I'm having to force myself through it. I suspected I wouldn't enjoy it so much (usually the case with Literary stuff) but how often does an Aussie win the Booker? And parts of it are very good.

I'm sure you'll enjoy it Carolyn:) BUT IMO that might be one I'd enjoy more as a paperback:) Don't ask me why I say that, but I'll be interested in your thoughts:)

Ryan I'm tempted to add it to my to-read shelf.

Saw Divergent on DVD and loved it btw!

Yeah me too. That explains why I read Ender's Game, The Hunger Games, Cloud Atlas, Life of Pi and the entire Harry Potter series.

Now that I've seen the movie I'm not really interested in reading Catching Fire, for example, though I understand that, as usual, there is plenty missing from the movie.

Yep, generally. I'm sitting here now, trying to think of a movie that I thought was better than the book but I'm having trouble….. lol

message 11884: by Ryan (new)

Ryan Actually I thought the Lord of the Rings movies were better than the books. There's only so many words I can read about mountains and plains before my eyes glaze over, but on the big screen it kept my attention.
