I just finished The Great Zoo of China by Matthew Reilly - I haven't read a Reilly in quite awhile, and I had forgotten the full-on action packed race from start to finish that he employs. I also completely suspended belief!!! Which I remember is another Reilly trait...

My review will follow closer to publication.

Can't wait to see what you think Brenda - I remember being excited to get into this one and I've never read anything by him before!

I am just about to start The First Discworld Novels: The Colour of Magic and the Light Fantastic which will be my first Terry Pratchett :)

Marina Finlayson | 285 comments Ooh, Angela, you have a treat in store! Love Terry Pratchett!

message 11957: by Teaghan (new)

Teaghan | 15 comments I read a few Pratchett books last year for the first time. I really enjoyed the Bromeliad trilogy and thought the gnomes were cute, but then moved straight on to one of the Discworld books (I got The last continent for free so tried it out). I struggled a bit with the Last Continent and my ex, who worships Pratchett, suggested I should have kept reading some of his kids/youth books to get used to his writing before moving on to his adult ones. I'm not a huge adult fantasy fan though so it's not a genre I'm necessarily used to reading. Just sharing in case you find the Discworld series a bit hard to digest like I did :)

Uh oh Angela! You're about to fall in love with a very long series!
I've only read about half of them but my favourites are Wyrd Sisters and Reaper Man.

Suz | 4432 comments I'm reading this at the moment The Ship of Brides by Jojo Moyes and enjoying immensely. I've not read anything of this theme, 1946 where Aussie war brides are crossing the ocean to England to meet their men. I'm sure lots of you have though. It's interesting, isn't it? I'd never heard of 'Not wanted don't come'. How awful!!

Sounds good Suzanne! I don't think I've read anything either. UK women going to America to marry US soldiers but not Aussies going to the UK.

His early Disc world books are much better than the later ones which get a bit heavy. Also if you start at the beginning you know the characters better. But you do have to share his sense of humour otherwise they may come across as silly.

Sarah For people reading the Discworld series, here's a map that helps figure out the flow. I find myself passing this out a lot even though I haven't read them.

http://io9.com/how-to-read-terry-prat...

Hope it helps.

I'm reading Chocolat by Joanne Harris. It's a rather enchanting book that I'm really enjoying. It reminds me a bit of Sarah Addison Allen's books. Chocolat (Chocolat, #1) by Joanne Harris

Funny you should say that Phrynne about sense of humour. I would say you also have to be in the mood. As a fan of Phantom of the Opera I read and chuckled my way through Maskerade then went to read another Pratchett book and came to a dead halt. Haven't read one since and it's not like I don't have opportunity. We have a whole shelf of them as DH is a fan. Maybe one day I will pick up another.

message 11966: by Angela (new)

Angela | 351 comments Well I started it today and am enjoying it so far :o) It's kind of reminding me a little of Dune although a lot more light-hearted and witty. Thanks for the map Sarah!

I feel like he was trying really hard to make sure the female characters played a central heroic part and weren't the stereotypical damsel in distress. In that respect it worked, but most turned out unlikeable, I am a fan of Aviendha but.

I am really looking forward to the last books, I love the way the story is going, and I am a really big fan of Sanderson's work.

I don't like all the books myself. Love books which Death and his family stars in , and the witches but the city watch books leave me cold - Hubby loves the City watch ones

I like nearly everything Pratchett. I like the city watch (Vimes is one of my favourite characters), the witches and all their offshoots, Death, Susan, and I'm currently reading The Wee Free Men (Discworld, #30).

I love Chocolat although I was not a fan of #2 The Lollipop Shoes also known as The Girl with No Shadow and have not read #3 Peaches for Father Francis although I will get round to it eventually.
I'm sure you are looking forward to First Frost being released later this month if you are a Sarah Addison Allen fan.

I've heard of this book, a couple of my online buddies have read it and recommended it to me. Will be interested in what you think :)

I actually studied her at High School as I did Art Appreciation as an elective subject and she was a Baroque period painter.

Dale Harcombe | 6886 comments Julie,I just like coloured flowers especially blue and purple. But really anything that is a colour. I'm not a fan of white for anything and don't wear it either. The one exception being when it is with red for my Sydney Swans and even then the white is minimal.
