Believe it or not but I haven't read The Shining ......... but I am thinking maybe I should have read that first to understand the character Dan a little better.

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) Characters overlapping between books, but not in a series, always make me feel like the people/characters are more real. An odd perception of mine but one I do have.

Rosamunde Pilcher's The Shell Seekers and September have share some of the same characters.

Think this is going to be a fairly evenly paced read - The Paying Guests by Sarah Waters

Am only about 45 pages in ... it's okay not really anything much happening at the moment except for the paying guests arriving.

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) About 2/3 of the way through The City & the City - really enjoying it, cheers for the recommendation Michael :P he comes up with such weird concepts.

Good to know. I've got this one on my shelf to read

Tango | 290 comments I'm about halfway through The Reader. It is very simply written, but the story is compelling so far and about to get more so.

Sally Howes | 223 comments I recently read Words of Radiance by Brandon Sanderson and was completely and utterly captivated! It's not often the second book in a series is better than the first. This one gets a rare 5★s from me.

Here is my review:

message 10365: by Ernest (new)

Ernest | 25 comments I recently finished 1984 by George Orwell. It was such a powerful book, but I could only read it in small doses as I found it quite dense, had lots to think about, was eerily prescient and at times, was uncomfortably close to reality.

My full review can be seen at https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I just finished The Girl with All the Gifts. It was okay but not as good as I was expecting.

I really need to read that book, but it is a little mixed with reviews

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) Just finished The City & the City - god that was good.

Review here. I need to get back in the habit of reviewing, I'm out of practice.

Glad you liked it, I'm with you. I was getting good at reviewing but took 6 weeks off and now I suck again

Michael (knowledgelost) It's true, I went from writing every day to not writing at all. I'm hoping to be back in the habit again soon

Elaine | 22 comments Brenda, I am so glad you enjoyed Until You're Mine. That very last sentence is just such a shocker LOL.
I started The Skeleton Road yesterday, and so far I am really enjoying it. Not quite what I normally read, so taking me out of my comfort zone a bit.

My favourite book of this year so far :-)

message 10381: by Dana (new)

Dana | 144 comments I have finished reading (at 1am this morning) Winter Wonderland. A fairly simple romance set in Quebec during winter. I almost put this down in the opening pages, but stuck it out for what ended up being a fun, quick, chic lit read. 3 stars with lots of references to maple syrup.

I have just finished reading The Rhyme's Library another 3 star read. An enjoyable enough mystery.

Ditto for me after I finish Stepford Wives - The Mirror Empire by Kameron Hurley or The Ask and the Answer by Patrick Ness?

message 10389: by Sally906 (new)

Sally906 | 87 comments I have just finished Wattle Creek by Fiona McCallum and am still reading Unforgivable by Sharon Robards and Of Merlot & Murder by Joni Folger. Then my at work book is Love, Desire and Betrayal by Margaret Lynette Sharp.

They are all really good!

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) The Stepford Wives finished, in one sitting - possibly the most unsettling thing I've ever read. Aren't boys just the meanest, girls!?

Also the mockery came hard and fast when mum noticed what I was reading. Such a loving relationship.

I haven't read this one - is one of those books you keep saying that you should. Saw the movie with Nicole Kidman, was ok but not great - spent most of it trying to decide if it was a spoof!!

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) Yeah the movies are awful from what I've heard. The book is fairly well done.

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9975 comments Almost finished Nest but every time I tried to read a bit today (like in the waiting room when I took Mum to the Doctor) we got called before I'd read 2 lines. Nice not to have to wait, but still....
