Sharon Robards (sharonrobards) | 944 comments Vicki wrote: "Can you usually tell from reading a sex scene whether a male of female wrote it? "

Not sure, especially as so many men and women of erotica write under assumed names... but I do wonder when I'm reading about nipple pinching, swallowing breasts whole like some big mac, and screaming because it just felt so good...

I kind of don't shy away from reading sex scenes, but I have been reading a romance (which I don't a great deal) Duchess by Night by Eloisa James and I found the first half absolutely adorable. It made me laugh out loud a few times, but when I got about half way through, it became sex scene after sex scene, not necessarily vulgar, but I just couldn't see the necessary charisma between the characters...possibly because of the context the attraction between them started, (he thinking she was a young man) and although I don't care what anyone's sexual inclination is, I think it might have worked better in my mind if the hero had known the true sex of the main character from get go, prior to starting their sexual feast, instead of him thinking throughout he was tempted to switch sides. Anyways, my rant for the moment.

I read another of Eloisa James's books a month or so ago, and enjoyed it. I wonder though, as this one was written after if I would have read that one. This book is dedicated to Georgette Heyer and on the dedication page the author notes "I couldn't get my character into clothing at all without help....", which I admit made me start reading, and for over half of the book it was a funny type of romance, which I can't help might have been better off without the sex scenes in this particular story line....as I was enjoying the humour so much before they were introduced.

Very late to this conversation, I was puzzling 'who in the heck are Eve and Roarke?' Thankfully, Wiki helped me out. It also provided me with in-depth physical description of Eve who 'funnily' sounds like she looks just like Nora Roberts.

Regarding Fifty Shades of Grey, yes, I'm a lemming and I read it.

Then I thought, 'if you have it at home, why read about it?' lol:P

In a much more sober mood, I am starting Bring Up the Bodies by Hilary Mantel

LOL, I've certainly heard of the most unusual people reading Fifty Shades. I read it to see what all the fuss was about and just found it to be appallingly badly written (not surprised at all that it was self-published) and something akin to driving past the scene of a car crash - you want to look away but can't. Now, I must say I am not the least bit averse to a good sex scene, but there is a big difference between a good one and a bad/gratuitous one. I found nothing whatsoever erotic about Fifty Shades, whereas I have enjoyed sex scenes in books like The Other Boleyn Girl, The Boleyn Inheritance, Outlander and The Persimmon Tree. I guess a book just has to be well-written so I can be invested in the story and characters enough to enjoy a tastefully done sex scene.

Funnily enough, just last night I finished The Crimson Petal and the White by Michel Faber, which is ostensibly the story of a whore in Victorian London, yet it contains very few, very brief sex scenes, and is much more a story about the different ways in which Victorian-era women of all stations were repressed by the patriarchal society in which they lived. It was just brilliantly written, and even though it is nearly 900 pages long, I wasn't bored for a single second. Definitely a 5★ read for me, and in the top three books I've read so far this year. I'll be posting a longer review soon!

I've read three of them and loved The Crimson Petal and the White by Michel Faber a fraction more than The Other Boleyn Girl, and The Boleyn Inheritiane by Philippa Gregory I don't recall a great deal of sex scenes in Philippa Gregory's books, possibly more impled in many instances or perhaps I was tired LOL, but did feel that Michel Faber handled them well considering the topic was about a prostitue that had a great deal of bending ability (backwards, forwards) and perhasp she might have been able to suspend from the ceiling and do the deed :D

Absolutely agree 100%. I can't believe it made best seller lists. Incredibly poorly written. I started to read it and it was a DNF for me. I am not adverse to erotic scenes - but I am very adverse to this book.

I work with a woman who escaped an abusive marriage and she said that the woman in the book accepted as perfectly normal the same things that she had her ex husband arrested for. She just didn't get why women were getting excited about it.

Sally, you've said it so well. FSoG was just so trashy, written like it was intended to shock, as if to teach us all about BDSM.

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) My reading mojo is back, thank goodness. I started Bring Up the Bodies and am wondering. Did Mantel read the reader's comments about Wolf Hall? Because she certainly has tightened up the narrative and made it much more 'reader friendly'. Don't get me wrong, I loved Wolf Hall but there is a notable difference of the style of writing in Bring Up The Bodies.
