Andrea | 2164 comments For a change of pace, I'm currently reading some non-fiction: Message from an Unknown Chinese Mother: Stories of Loss and Love by Xinran. I've read just about everything else Xinran has written, but for some reason this one has sat on my bookshelf, unread, since it was first released. I'm expecting it to be a bit of a difficult read.

I didn't realise she had written other books. I read Sky Burial: An Epic Love Story of Tibet years ago and loved it.

This was a great review, Angela! I'm currently reading Written in my own Hearts Blood by Diana Gabaldon and while I have thoroughly enjoyed The Outlander series I have found this book a little harder to get in to. Probably more so because the books I read leading up to it were light-hearted easy-reads, a far cry from the sweeping saga that is an Outlander novel. So The Rosie Project sounds just like what I'll need after it!

Sally, if you're interested in making a start on her non-fiction, I'd recommend The Good Women Of China: Hidden Voices - unforgettable.

I started to read Cop Town and gave up in one chapter. It was so depressing and not what I felt like reading at all.
So then I tried The Truth Is a Cave in the Black Mountains: A Tale of Travel and Darkness with Pictures of All Kinds by Neil Gaiman. It is only a little book so I finished it!!!
Now I have to start something else. Oh the hardship.

Phrynne, interesting to read your comment about Cop Town, as I heard Karin Slaughter being interviewed at length about the book on ABC Radio National only a couple of days ago. Was it a bad chapter or just that you were not in the mood for that kind of story at the time? Would you pick it up again?

@ Mary and Vicki
I actually have tried Karin Slaughter before because my husband has all her books. I was not able to get into her series at all - her characters annoyed me! I have recently heard her speak about Cop Town and thought she was a lovely lady and the book sounded different and fascinating. But as soon as I started it I knew it was not for me. I do not get any pleasure out of reading about really unpleasant, uneducated people and topics such as racial hatred. This is just me. I am sure it is an excellent book and many people will love it but I won't be picking it up again:)

Wow Phrynne, your husband is the fan and you went to the lunch....did he come too? She did speak well, and I love all her books but I can see where you're coming from and certainly each to his/her own. There are certain genres & styles that don't interest me. Wouldn't it be a boring world if we all liked the same thing!

I think what I am avoiding in some books is too much realism. That's probably why I like fantasy so much.

Love the covers on these books.
I will probably start his second book Black Wattle Creek (Charlie Berlin, #2) by Geoffrey McGeachin as my first read for the Spring challenge on the weekend....followed by my romance choice for September.

At the moment I am reading Australian Flavour: Traditional Australian Cuisine by Sharon Robards and enjoying a trip down memory lane!

The Diggers Rest Hotel is an early hotel on the original route to the Bendigo goldfields in the town of Diggers Rest, Victoria, Australia. It was originally built in 1854 and is one of the few Mount Alexander Road goldrush wayside hotels known to survive.

In the 1970s it was briefly famous as the nearest hotel to the Sunbury Pop Festival site, and became the site of scuffles with police.

In 2008, the hotel was partially destroyed by fire and since then there have been many efforts to rebuild this famous pub.

Sally906 | 87 comments I have a reading confession - last night I read nothing at all!!!!!!

GASP!!!

I just couldn't get settledinto any of my books so ended up playing my neglected computer games - feeding my dragons and setting them up to breed me new ones, fighting a few dark elves and building up my markets, rose a few levels in an Egyptian game and majong game, and then finished off building up my virtual fish tanks.

I got the book reading vibe back this morning though - most reluctant to come to work as I started to read more of The Saturday Big Tent Wedding Party by Alexander McCall Smith
