I did that too. For ages people kept saying "You must read the Dresden Files" until eventually I gave in and read the first one. And then I just kept on reading them till I finished the whole series. Now I am hanging out for each new one as they come out!

No - when you run out of Harry Dresden you need to meet his English counterpart Matthew Swift in the series by Kate Griffin.

Sounds excellent too! Always good to have something to move on to so you don't suffer that end of series depression :)

Yes, but I think I only started writing reviews for the third one onwards. Some are better than others, but all are good. This one is a good one!! I love Kerry Greenwood's writing and I'm hoping that the next Corinna Chapman is not too far off. Last November, she said she was 5 chapters into it, tentative title The Sapper's Dog, but when I emailed her in June, she said "Corinna is on hold for the present. I will get back to her when I can."
:-(
have to be patient.....

Carolyn | 9840 comments I love Kerry Greenwood's Phrynne Fisher series too and buy them as soon as they come out.

I started reading Terry Pratchett's Discworld series a year or so ago (don't know why it took so long for me to get to them - my sister in Perth is a big fan and has them all). There are 42 in the series at this stage and I'm only 1/2 way through.

I have to say that I have read and own all the Discworld series, and all the Phrynne Fisher books and all the In Death series. I am a compulsive serial reader and a book buying addict.

I think I'd better stay away from that series for now as well. From the sound of it, I'm not quite as far gone as Phrynne but getting there :)
I don't think there's any known cure Phrynne so it's a good thing that most addicts don't want one!

I'm almost envious that you're reading them for the first time, Carolyn! Although they read well a second, third, fourth....

And seeing that we all seem to like very similar stories, I think I must venture into the Dresden Files myself some time :)

Yes, it is strange that I've come to the Discworld series so late. I used to buy them as gifts for my sister but never tried them - perhaps it was the covers that put me off or the premise that the stories were about some misfit wizards and witches on a world travelling through space on the back of a giant turtle.

You should definitely try the Dresden Files :)

Leonie (leonierogers) | 3567 comments Other Discworld fans might like to try this quiz - it's all about guessing which of the new covers are for which books. (Although I'm not very excited about the new covers myself.)

I've got that one to read. Currently reading another ARC I, Migrant by Sami Shah but pushing myself to read it. This biggest turn off for me is the very liberal use of the "F" word. I know every man, woman and their dog thinks this word is acceptable nowadays but I don't and it still offends me.

Same Sally - the occasional in the right circumstances is passable, but over use is dreadful. It's rife in Mothers and Daughters too!

I didn't really discover Discworld until a friend I met at university checked out the first book from one of the libraries, handed it to me and said, "I know your sense of humour, you'll love it."

Then I was hooked.

message 10077: by Mish (new)

Mish | 3601 comments I'm currently reading 2 books at the moment.

Unforgivable by Sharon Robards - Horrible situation to be in for single mothers at that time, thinking that they have no support or options but to give away their babies. I'm really enjoying it. Very well written and constructed for a little book.

Mona by Dan T. Sehlberg. Complex and heavy plot, with lots of character to keep track of. Not really enjoying it.

I love Hogfather! And I agree about the voice :) It's the one that always 'sounds' in my head when I read his dialogue now. I just re-read Reaper Man recently. Terry Pratchett's my 'go to' author when I need to have a relaxed read and let my head clear.

You're so right Phrynne. With both those authors you know you can just get stuck into the book and get immersed in it.

I'm trying to make the Discworld series last as long as possible by just reading 2-3 at a time as I don't expect there will be too many more new ones.

The later ones are not quite as good as the early ones either. They get a bit off track. Although when Veterinari (think that's right) starts to feature there's some really good stuff. I think I might just read them all again:)

I went through a phase in my teens. My Mum used to like them, and they were a nice change of pace from the Agatha Christies and Scifi/Fantasy stuff I was gobbling down at the time.

My mum had them all as well (along with all the Agatha Christies, Dorothy Sayers, PG Woodhouse and Readers Digest Condensed novels!)so I also read them as a teenager when I ran out of library books.
